    I grew up watching a version of this movie that we taped off of abc. This was probably in 1987 or 1988. It had all of the additions and alternate takes listed here, but it also had most of if not all of the deleted material intact. It is possible it had a couple of shots of the Ceti eel entry cut out. But other than that, I am sure most of the rest was there. I can distinctly hear in my head the way “It is very cold in space” was cut abruptly short by the commercial break, for example.

      Same here. I distinctly remember watching a copy taped from TV from around 88 my parents made and it was definitely the ABC cut. It was the first time I had seen Wrath of Khan so I grew up with knowing about Peter being Scotty's nephew and all and was surprised none of that was in the theatrical version. Thank God the Directors Cut years later kept that intact.

  • @videoplusdvd
    @videoplusdvd 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    According to Nicholas Meyer, the TV version was his director’s cut. One of the biggest losses was the proper introduction to Scotty’s nephew in the engine room, which ruins the payoff later when he’s killed. The novelization of the script kept this info intact, and also indicated Saavik was half Vulcan, half Romulan.

      It's pretty much the Director's Cut, except the scene in the turbolift, which is taken from the theatrical cut. Everything else in the TV cut was in the Director's Cut which you can get on DVD and now on Blu-ray.

      Yeah I think I prefer the theatrical/director's cut of the turbolift scene. I know Kirk already had quite the reputation as a ladies' man, but Saavik being a bit flirty kind of feels inappropriate. Plus she doesn't push the button to hold the turbolift in the ABC version. So why does Kirk push the button for the turbolift to resume when neither of them put it on hold in the first place. (Other than so Bones can ask "Who's been holding up the damn elevator?!" that is. lol)

    It's interesting how many alternative takes (apparently specifically for television) were made. Slightly snappier editing eg in the scene with the Regula One crew debating what to do about Reliant. I've heard rumors the studio may have mandated these just in case they decided to release it as a TV movie instead of straight to theaters.

    My dad recorded this off of HBO in the early 80's, looks pretty much like the laserdisc version you have here and it also has that crude looking subtitles for the Saavik and Spock Vulcan translation.
    Later, I recorded the off-air ABC broadcast in the late 80's, I guess around 1989 and it's pretty similar to this. A few years later, our local ABC affiliate broadcasted it again in the early 90's, and I recorded over the nationally broadcasted 1989 one. It seems the same but it looks like a newer film transfer. It's much brighter and cleaner too, and has the extra scenes. I always wonder where that transfer came from.
    Also, I believe there's an extra line of dialog in the training part at the beginning, the computer telling about the Kobyashi Maru's registration, right before Saavik says "...damn."

      @@alucard624 I remember reading the TMP and TWOK novelizations a year or two ago and I feel that if the directors had the time available, already great movies could have been even more incredible.
      that said, the problem is that you can only make a movie so long until it becomes bloated. this, imo, is a problem with the motion picture as a format.
      if you were to do a straight adaptation of the books, you'd probably get a half hour to an hour of runtime. a 3 or a 4 hour program can be made to work as a TV film/miniseries.
      the problem there becomes budget. it might be different today, but back in the day, the budget for a movie was greater than that of miniseries, and I simply can't see anyone having the budget for this outside of a movie studio.
