It’s important to note that Ricardo isn’t just jabbing here. He’s based on Ricardo Lopez who had a very specific and unconventional jab. Instead of shuffling forward like a normal jab, Lopez would leap off of his plant foot into his punch. At the same time he’d keep his fist vertical until almost the exact point of contact when he’d rotate it to hit his opponent. This served two functions: 1. Firstly, it made actually seeing Ricardo’s jab hard because when combined with his leap the position of his hand was quite literally in the middle of your eyes until the last second, making it almost impossible to get past. 2. Secondly, Ricardo’s late rotation made it easy for him to split guards and get past tough opponents. Combined this made him an undefeated fighter along with some unique ringwork based on perfect fundamentals and aggressive but not reckless defense. It’s the perfect counter to the Dempsey.
Dempsey roll is the perfect offense and defense, it has speed and power combined, and delivers the whole weight of the body combined but before landing the dempsey, Ippo has to effectively use the speed to confuse the opponent (before feinting his right and hitting left.) But before he could land dempsey, ricardo just timed his whole special move, as they say.. timing beats speed 😭
The anime dempsey is not the perfect defense in the slightest, we literally see its weakness in the anime and he has to improve it. Perfect things dont need improving
