Lovely to see you guys along with Jarrod Kimber pay such a fulsome tribute to Ashwin !
Ironically, there aren't too many people back here in India who have done that ! It just goes to show that he is more valued abroad than he is at home. No wonder the Aussie team gave him a signed T shirt as a mark of respect for his achievements !

I wonder if it was Lyon's idea... After the last Gabba test, where he missed getting his 400th wicket, Rahane and the team gave him a signed jersey...

The Aussies fight hard, play hard and off the field they know how to respect the opposition and none can understand the importance of Ashwin better than Nathan Lyon.

As an Aussie, never understood why he didn’t play more when he toured here, was also happy when he wasn’t picked because he’s the one who puts more fear into our batsmen

Bcos his whole career overlapped with another great spinner and a superior batter and India are never comfortable with 2 spinners in SENA

@@Lathi33I’d rather ashwin playing than some of the awful pacers they picked over him pre bumrah and shami

Ishant to an extent had a great record vs Australia and Umesh Yadav has a fantastic record at India. Hope in MCG we can witness India using 2 spinners - Jadeja and Washington along with Nitish Reddy as the 3rd pacer. Bumrah and Akash Deep to start with Siraj being rested.

Spot on about Ashwin. He had been a bench warmer overseas ever since the SCG draw in 2021. All through the truncated England tour, as Kohli went on a we-will-win-with-seam proving mission, even at the one-off 5th Test a year later, this time under Sharma. The end result was no series win, after all, with Kohli revving up Bairstow at the wrong time. I will miss Ashwin, as I do Ajinkya Rahane. Both deserved better.

I think Ashwin was one of the main reasons India qualified for last WTC final but they didn't play him in the final... Yet another example of the champion cricketer being mistreated...

One of the best discussions around a great's perhaps triggered retirement....tks both for covering his splendid career, his guts to fight out tough situations, how he kept striving to improve...although BCCI and team mgmt failed to do justice to this great bowler, happy you have assauged some of the sad ending...cheers

I always felt Gambhir never had the Test cricket record where it mattered to coach the Test team. BCCI had this cussednesd about insisting that there would would not be split coaching. Layman as red ball coach and Gamhir as white ball coach was my choice.

Ashwin was highly mistreated. It’s not his fault that they wanted to deepen the batting overseas, it’s the batter’s fault for collapsing often.
He should have been in every XI in every country we played in.

100% agree. What makes his selection issues even worse imo is there was never actually that much of a difference between Ashwin and Jadejas batting. I would understand it more if Jadeja was averaging 50 at number 3 and Ashwin was a hopeless number 11. For most of their careers Jadeja was averaging early 30’s and Ashwin high 20’s. It changed a little when they got older and Ashwin declined with the bat while Jadeja had a good run, but for ten years they were pretty similar level batsmen imo. And as for the bowling, there’s no comparison. Ashwin was a proven wicket taking bowler in all conditions. Jadeja was a containing bowler outside of India. Btw I think Jadeja was a great cricketer as well. I’m. not trying to put him down, it’s just relative to Ashwin the bowling especially should have made him an automatic selection.

There seems to be a great deal of disagreement between coach and skipper regarding his selection in playing XI, to the extent that they couldn't even guarantee him selection for Sydney test!

At times like this - Ashwin's poignant departure mid series - there are but two comforts to console cricket connoisseurs - music and malt. I was hoping you would both do a duet rendition of Avalon by Foxy Music in tribute to Ash but I suppose neither of you are chanteurs. Chateurs yes, but not chanting choristers or castratos, alas.
Oh well. Let us, therefore, crack open a bottle of linseed oil shandy and seek solace from today's tribute to the great man himself.
Who indeed among us can comment on the complex casuistries and intrigues of the Indian selectors - Lemon perhaps with his spicy and pungent prose in the reading Guardian, or Collins with his ineluctable insights into the Ids (impulses, etc) of men in general and cricketers in particular. But not I nor the adoring fans and followers of the beautiful summer game.
I now find myself anxiously awaiting the Boxing Day test (already sold out!) and wondering if some of the other Indian and Australian "greats" will announce their departure. Who knows? That much-loved quinquagenarian, Ricky Thomas Ponting (Happy Birthday!)?
    What can I say?
Who has the right words at the right time? Only one man with his melodious, mellifluous talking radio voice - Adam Collins ("Caught behind!"). Let us listen intently to his warm valedictory words to our beloved "Ash".
"Ashwin, you've been a gem! We'll see you around..."
So moving, yes indeed. Makes one wonder what he was drinking from that tall glass of his or his parents'.
Ashwin's trials and tribulations are over now.
Thank you "Ash" for charming and comforting cricket lovers the moving world over.
We wish you unbridled hours of health and happiness, and unmingled days of love, joy and contentment. Adieu!
    Roses are red
    Violets are blue
    No words can convey
    Our deep love of you!

Bumrah has a better average than the best spinner of india in India currently
And also he has a better average than the best pacer of australia in australia
That guy is just a freak of nature

Ash was a too intelligent and educated cricketer , probably some of other cricketers were insecure with his presence and probably thought they would snatch their captaincy ambitions

good on aus to stick with lyon inspite of enticing option of playing 4 seamers. Issue with ashwin selection is top 4 be it rahane, pujara and openors not doing well overseas and them trying to build batting depth by utiizing jadeja/shardul etc. I think if we had young squad instead of relying on ogs as ashwin put and trusted young squad enough ashwin would get long run. I am of the opinion of moving on from kohli and rohit, having jadeja as batting allrounder in overseas with ashwin in squad and three fast bowlers, with bumrah, deep and new fast bowler could be mukesh/prasidh and giving them long run. All of these have happened becuase our batting has been inconsistent overseas and at home, entire pressure is falling on lower order and to divert attention easier option is adopted rather than complete strucutural change in lineup

Cant believe you guys are discussing Konstas replacing McSweeny! On the other end, you have a 38 year old, not scoring runs, also another one of the bats that Bumrah has in his pocket. If Konstas replaces anyone, it has to be Khwaja!

Ashwin anna's one last mindgame by retiring mid-series is to complicate selection choice for Sydney pitch and to add more pressure on Sundar. So, when things happen to fail, we will hear noises like 'We miss Ashwin'. If you don't play me, I don't care whatever happens to you is the typical West Mambalam attitude.....

I think it's a bit unfair to blame the team management for not playing him, he was just unlucky that he was in the same team as jadeja who is clearly better bat.

Finally, a comment with some sense. Team India didn't need all these drama created by Ashwin, especially ahead of the crucial boxing day test. He should have kept quite until the series end or should have left citing personal reason. But, he made it all about himself. Who knows, with teams like SA, WI & Eng touring India he could have continued to play had he not announced retirement.
