Another reason for not smiling in photographs in the Victorian era was that often families would memorialize dead family members by taking their picture. With or without the family. And the dead were made up to look as if they were alive, even to drawing eyes on their eyelids. Several of the photos used here actually have dead people in them. Try to figure out which people are dead.

The most clear person in the photo is the dead person, because they do no move.

That is a myth. It is very obvious when a dead person is photographed even back then. These people are laying down and look dead. People who have their eyes open even if they look to be in a stand are very much alive.

Hi Mike, interesting that they chose Für Elise, rather than Beethoven's 5th symphony as an example of his music. Für Elise is a pretty little song, and often one of the first songs a piano student learns, while the first few bars of Beethoven's 5th are among his most iconic.

The main reason for no smiling in old photos and most paintings even today are due to the exposure length/time it takes to hold still for a photo to be taken. People can't stand there an smile for that long.

I read about Douglas Bader! They put him in command of a unit that had heavy losses. Their planes were damaged or destroyed. Then they saw that their commander had artificial legs. They thought they were screwed. Then he climbed into a plane and did aerobatics for a while. He did stunts he had invented. Then he landed, got out and went to his office. He got the planes ready to go, and he went on the missions with his men. They took down the most Germans in The Battle Of The Bulge.

Photograph smiles: Early photography required really LONG exposure times, sometimes several minutes, during which the subjects had to remain absolutely still. A smile was a bit more likely to be moved during that time! The place of Caesar's assassination Is easily found in Rome; the yellow crime scene tape is still up. That stuff lasts a long, long time! When you said cannibalism it reminded me of a true crime story where this couple ended someone and didn’t know how to dispose of it, dismantled it and threw a big neighborhood barbecue. People kept saying what kind of meat is this and the husband would say it’s a premium meat. Imagine after this story came out and you were at this barbecue 🤮

On a bit of morbid note an addendum to number 20 the recently deceased were dressed and posed (often with family members but not always) for their final photograph and due to the time between the passing and the taking of the photo having a smile was not practical so having a “neutral” facial expression when being photographed became the norm.

I have a photo of my great grandmother and her friend sitting on the porch laughing their asses off. It may have been a Kodak photo which was not as formal. But it’s dated 1888. A restoration specialist said expression like that is rare.

Actually, July 4 was not the date the Declaration of Independence was signed, but rather the date it was voted to be sent for ratification by the individual colonies. Actual signatures were affixed over a period of 2-6 August, after copies had been carried back to the individual colonial legislatures for approval.

I question the validity of the death of Crassus. How would the Parthian empire know of his wealth? His execution was probably due to some molten liquid being poured down his throat but was it gold? Sounds like a tall tale about greed when Crassus was actually looking for military conquest in order to gain respect as a leader, like Caesar had done in Gaul. Gold was a rare commodity in those days. History would have us to believe it was just lying on the ground everywhere.

The empress of Austro-Hungary outlawed smoking in public in the 1830s

'Nazi' anti-smoking was not first. King James II of (Scotland and) England, wrote a booklet called, "A Counter-blast To Tobacco", in which he viewed that very new (to the English) habit of smoking, as very bad for the lungs, very foul, etc. An anti-smoking campaign of sorts!

actually another reason why you didnt smile was indeed it was hard work staying still to get the picture. think about not moving for like 20 or 10 minutes. then if you moved you had to do it all over again.
