Growing up as a music lover, so much music on the radio was boring to the max... then getting into Zappa opened my eyes and ears. Music did not need to be boring, not be just more of the same, and not to be taken so bloody serious
Been a FRANK fan since I was 8 yrs old (1974) I bought a box of lps at a flea market and there was a great blend of stuff , that I'm actually still a fan of all of it ...seeing Zappa live was always a great experience ... sadly, I thought he'd be around forever RIP FZ You cant miss with any ZAPPA , Some amazing drumming on the SHEIK YERABOUTI album
You are in for a treat as a drummer listening to The Black Page, and if the Black Page #1 seems to hard to play, there´s always the Black Page #2, the easy, teenage New York version! Enjoy. Zappa Lives!
Billy The Mountain, an album side long narrative parody of rock operas recoreded live in 1971, on the album The Mothers (Franks band at the time) Just Another Band from LA
The surprise genuinely caught me off guard and was awesome, but for a future Frank Friday, you need to do the full Yellow Snow suite (Don't Eat the Yellow Snow is only the first of four parts, the full thing is like 10 minutes).
@@L33Reacts There is another video from the Dub Room special that you should see, Florentine Pogen. No animation to distract, a really good showcase of the band. And you absolutely have to see Muffin Man live in NY on Halloween, his guitar will blow you away on that one. th-cam.com/video/HGV3yV9q4Q4/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/KlAZnvNSGHo/w-d-xo.html Thanks for doing Frank Friday's, I'll be looking for the next one...
I can tell a lot of people won't "get" it in one way or another... there are multiple things going on with his stuff. I really dig it. I'm very sarcastic and a (bad) musician so this was made for me in mind 😂
He uses a lot of 'pataphysics in his lyrics. It's an absurd branch of literature; kinda similar to Monty Python. I suggest Sinister Footwear II by Zappa next, the live version.
This was a cut one.......Stinkfoot is much longer. Then it jumped to the Yellow Snow suite on Apostrophe........and that was only the first part of four.......and that one is a must one to do a reaction on. We looking forward to that one......to hear the story about Nanook, the eskimo.
1 Frank every Friday, you will be done in about 500 weeks.😁😁😁😁 Must Try Joe's Garage. A Triple Album Rock Opera about the evils of being in a Rock Band. Must be played in 20 minute segments because it is narrated between tracks. Some of the most amazing Music, with some very clear story telling. Very high on the Filth Meter.
Yay! A real convert. Welcome to the fold. 🙂 Soooo much to choose from in Frank's oeuvre. So many styles, difficult to know where to start. So far, your choices have been easy on the ear - there are plenty that are...challenging. The Black Page is one such challenge! What could be suggested, though...? Hmm.... Joe's Garage (the single edit is more accessible than the album cut given the Central Scrutinizer's narrative makes for little sense without hearing the entire album. The edit keeps narration to a minimum.) The Grand Wazoo (either the title track or...and why not?!...the entire album) Bobby Brown Goes Down (perhaps done to death. On the one hand, it's hilarious, but on the other so overly offensive) Peaches n Regalia (opening track on one of his most favoured albums. And what a track! But...oh, what the heck...do the entire fantastic album! Hot Rats) Tinseltown Rebellion (oh, yes!) Be In My Video (bonkers!) Watermelon in Easter Hay (one of the finest guitar solos of all time) .... Ahh..., jump in with both feet and swim as best you can. 😁 Zappa is the wildest ride of all. In surfing terms, hang 11. 😎🤘
Hey bro! Thank you so much for all the suggestions. I will definitely add all of these to my list for zappa. I'm excited to tackle something more challenging. I will be doing the black page next Friday! And yes I am a true convert. This guy is is a genius honestly LOL
Frank always had great drummers. But keep it greasy on the Joe's Garage album has some fantastic drumming the solo section is in 19/16 . I think that song will blow your mind. The whole Joe's garage is a master class in drumming and drum production.
Zappa's a pretty interesting study. His mix and match techniques ended up influencing some of my own work -- it's fun moving guitar solos around and making them work. Brilliant man.
Oooh, since your moving on to The Black Page, I would recommend the following from the Zappa/ Terry Bozzio era: Titties and Beer, The Illinois Enema Bandit, City of Tiny Lights, and/or Tryin to Grow a Chin. But I'm sure you'll have plenty of other entries for many Friday's with Frank, lol.
Please do "Drowning Witch" later. 80's Zappa slick sound, amazing drummer as Chad Wackerman, one of the best band Zappa had, two of the best Zappa solos on an official album ever, etc. 😊
Check out stuff from Andy Partridge, XTC. Similar smart humor and music chops. Try out his Dukes of Stratosphere itteration where he captured late 60s psychodelic pop.
Annotations to Frank: first: He is not my favorite Artist..but....he was - with absolute Cerainty (!!!) The greatest Composer in the whole History of ('Rock' - Oh i don't like this Term!) this Genre (perhaps with Gentle Giant). But F. Z. Made hundreds of phantastic Albums with a wide range of Styles. He was A real Genius. His whole art of Composing Music in this Genre is unmatched. Frank is his own genre. He was a Genius of the Century. ☺ Kind Regards Heinz from Munich. 🌳🌷✨
Yah, you really do have to just do that whole side of the (' )album, and hear the rest of the "Yellow Snow Suite," that whole side is part of 1 piece of work broken up in sections.
You stopped it right before the Em - C7 -Em - C7 part, (compares to the middle instrumental part of "Nights in white satin." It's not a short piece, it's actually an album-side-length medley.

Yellow snow suite consists of four songs. That was the introduction.
Thought it ended way too soon, that explains it. I've only heard heard it as the suite.
Awesome, have'nt heard this for ages. Been a fan of Zappa since high school back in the 1970's, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! He is the master...
I saw Zappa twice. Both times were mind blowing. Those were the days.

Why this genius is not played at any single radio station or television?? One of the greatest artist XX century not exist anywhere
LOVE Zappa! ever since hearing the Mud Shark on the Filmore album.
He is the f'in man... love it 😀

I will definitely finish it! I just thought I'd surprise yall for the first frank Friday 😁 thanks for watching my friend

much more fun that the black page which is an exercice of complexity for drummers ! nice reaction anyway !
That was the short version , definitely need to check out the full version . Don't Eat The Yellow Snow , The Suite !
such an awesome performance, Ruth Underwood's percussion always impresses me.
Zappa once said about his music: "Either you get it or you don't. If you don't, you probably weren't supposed to."
You clearly were supposed to.

Cool news, glad to hear that!

Sheik Yerbouti >>>>
Haha I know right... until the end of time basically. But hey. I'm down for it. Let's get it haha
I think its more than double that, he composed more than 1200 songs/molodies/compositions, so you have A LOT to look forward to. Enjoy
...and if you really want to see a drummer a work, just check out "Punkys Whips". Enjoy - Zappa Lives!

Zappa always said: "4/4 is unnatural, people never talk in 4/4" - I'm paraphrasing here, but that was his philosophy.

The dirty yellow snow is a suite, you have to listen the next songs in a row

awesome
It puts a hurts on my nose
This is in part a parody of Barry White's songs -- seriously, go check out some of those. It'll make "Stink-Foot" even funnier.
Way back when I named my band Apostrophe after the album name. But never played a Zappa song too hard haha
As a drummer you really need to listen to "Masterbuilder" from the Gong album You....
Can't go wrong with Uncle Frank though..
You should do his song "Dinah Moe Humm" from the Overnight Sensation album.
..and, you shouldn't forget: He was Autodidact! ☺Kind Regards Heinz from Munich.

Watermelon in Easter hay.
Give a chance to ZAPPA IN NEW YORK. It features songs such TITTIES 'N' BEER and THE ILLINOIS ENEMA BANDIT
I'll check it out thank you 😊
"Where else can you find music like this?" You can't. Try The Grand Wazoo.
Do the adventures of Gregory peckery its a great song
Listen to the overnight sensation release the music is insane percussion keyboards like you would not believe
He's fucking FRANK! Always amazing.
The Muffin Man an I have been good friends close to 40 years.
Same here, fell in love with Frank, the Muffin Man :-) in 1972......and never fell out of love, still listening EVERY DAY!
The "BONGO" version is my favorite ...awesome lp
The Black Page? Wow
Easy Meat
The animations are probably due to the fact that the solo is edited together from different versions.

Zoot Allures! Fantastic Frank Album! I really enjoyed this vid btw. Keep up the good work!
