thanks. helped me with the belt routing. PO didn't have a clue about this mower. it's been a complete overhaul and clean. my belts the same way. they also added a free 1" socket to the idler stud for some reason. lol. found that I need a rear wheel the teeth are to worn down. thingiverse has 3d print wheels so may just print one
You're welcome. Good luck with the mower. It's a really nice one.
@JakeShieldsMurder
No. It is not a key start. Thanks for watching.
Thanks! I have the same lack of engagement but began at the levers, which was not a good way to get started. Then I looked underneath but still don't know. And actually, I did begin removing the cover as you did, then stopped and looked underneath but haven't figured out the problem. Now I will try your approach. 😊
Good luck.
@@Paisteboy The engagement cable is broken, where it attached by the pulley.
Ok. 👍
Thanks for the video. My JS20 stopped being self propelled, and it was the little spring on the cable that broke. Looking online I found some stuff that might be helpful to others, so here ya go.

Quit putting yourself between the mower and the sun. Creates a major shadow
Won't happen again. Lol.
I Have this mower and i LOVE IT...It Is A Beast...i live in S. Louisiana where if you miss a weekly yard mow you could be in trouble if all you own is a weak lawn mower....the JS20 can damn near Bush Hog if you lift the wheels all they way up.....
You're not lying about that! I just got a free JS30, needs a new drive wheel, and maybe a belt. This thing starts first pull every time, it's a beast though, needs the self propell working.
Great mower with a lot of power for sure. Well built too.
Thank you I just bought an old machine without a manual for the JS20. Any chance you could email me a copy of basic instructions?
Sorry. I don't have anymore information on this mower as it was my Nextdoor neighbors mower.
I was hoping you'd figure out the turtle speed I got this from a friend no idea how I Work It I was almost running behind it
It's been a while, and I don't remember it being difficult to slow the mower down. This was my neighbors mower, so this was the only time that I used it.
It would be nice if you had the camera above the belts while they were running
Sorry. Was the video not clear on how to do this repair?
I'm trying to replace the belt I have a js40 same design as what you opened up to but this video is not helping me.... my belt has snapped and I'm trying to decipher how the pulley system goes
I'm sorry to hear that.
My belt has snapped and I'm trying to figure out what the layout is for the belt on the pulley system
@marywittig1505
I don't have this mower anymore and don't have any way to help you at this point if the video isn't enough. Sorry.
Good video. I have a question. the bracket that has the two pulleys; I replaced new ones but looks like one of them does not turn.its that normal?
take both pullies off and grease the shafts. plus the spacers where they meet the pullies
See comment below
👍
i was given one of these . the drive isnt really variable. it just slips the belt to slow down. useless in real world mowing
Thanks Bro, I have a JS30 that while it was in storage had the belt chewed off of it. I asked everywhere for the routing diagram and nobody had it, I asked 3 John Deere dealers and a local small engine repair guy. Thanks a TON !!! Now my mower has drive again !!!!!!
TH-cam is great for stuff like this.
LOL Sounds like B-17 bomber....
Lol.
I to have an JS20 and use it every week!! great equipment.... the too! my neighbor's are envious of,,, nice cut with little effort...that self propelled feature works great!!
@BandOnTheRun87
No, it's my next door neighbor's mower and he asked me to take a look at it and see if I could fix the problem.
Guys. Pls, show and use safety pre-cautions when filming; to many people get hurt by not disconnecting spark-plug cable first.... fingers are valuable too! thanks for the video, also !!
+ePelliccia Realestate If the brake cable is engaged and working there shouldn't be a problem with working on the drive belt. There is no way you can turn the belt that much to engage the engine.
i have a js60 john deere is shaking really bad how to fix it thanks
Oscar oscar your shaft that the blade is on is probably bent
Or blade..im sure its fixed by now..if not ...geeezz...i would hate to see your yard😮
I had a 60 with a bent shaft in SC and omg it about rattled my arms off
dont know where you guys all live but i see john deer push mowers for sale at my locale tractor store all the time
Awesome! Will give this a try later tonight.
Thanks for watching.
@rizzo4077
Cool. Saving green while mowing green. Thanks for watching.
Thanks. That's good to know. I added it to the title for people to find easier..
I have this John Deere love it
Nice!
Thanks for the video. First, John Deere did not make these mowers, and their dealers will not work on them. They licensed their name to Lowes and another manufacturer so that Lowes could sell a "John Deere" mower. They run great as long as you never use gas containing ethanol. The ethanol absorbs water which turns the zinc casting of the carburetor into zinc oxide, which gums up the carb. Use 100% pure gas. www.pure-gas.org Not necessarily the brand Pure, but stations of many brands that sell pure gasoline without ethanol added.
Thanks for the info.
You got it. I'm glad it helped and saved you money.
Hey dude when you going to bring me my cordless drill back, you've had it for well over a month now?
I don't even know you.
Nice! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video, my mower belt was not routed correct so I rerouted it and it works great....Thanks Again.
I got the JS 40 same trans purchased 2007. Replaced all cables, belt once & trans traction cable twice. Also rear wheels & front.
Nice.
My neighbor ended up blowing the engine on this one. He probably wasn't changing the oil. I have the mower now and I'm planning on putting another engine on it.
@@Paisteboy My trans just went out but runs great 😢Already out $135 in new parts new rear wheels, blade & recoil. Selling OfferUp $100 b/o
The one I got from my neighbor is still sitting in my shed untouched with a blown engine. I have a potential downer engine for it. I just haven't really needed it so the project is just waiting.
Thanks for the video. I'll buy a JD based on the drive system. Saw the other videos showing the crappy plastic geared wheels of the Craftsman and Huskvarna that wear out in 1-2 years. Starting to look for a dealer today. Thanks!
I may be wrong but I believe JD stopped making Push/walk behind mowers, unfortunately.
JD also has crappy plastic geared wheels.
Thanks, man! This video just saved me about $60 in repair and a week's worth of waiting.
dont buy this desighn john deere or snapper. the desighn sucks and isnt really variable speed.
+super20dan
As far as I know, John Deere stopped making push or self propelled mowers a few years back.
Thanks! Nice video and it works on the JS30 model too.
good that you fixed it
I'm glad the video helped. Happy mowing.
I was wondering could you do a video on why the blades would stop cutting while you were mowing?...or just answer it for me please?
is this your mower?
not fixed, the Belt is slipping, may want to get a new one. GTX22269 $11 at Lowes
The mower in this video has been working with the same belt since this video was made.
paisteboy
had the same problem works fine on fast, slipped bad on slow. replaced the belt all fixed. To bad John Deere doesnt sell push Lawn mowers in the US anymore.
tom115 yes it is too bad.
I have a similar John Deere mower and the belt is fine
👍
I have this same mower. It's running fine, but for the life of me I can't remember how to put the bagging attachment on. Any ideas?
