I like how you mentioned the discontent on certain colonizing attitudes, you've been the first expat who has mentioned that. I'm a peruvian american living in Cusco (city), but my mom who is peruvian lives in the sacred valley. We've definitely noticed the gentrification that's happened through the valley, especially in places like Urubamba and Pisac. In a sense it's good, because there's more investment in infrastructure and more businesses offerings services to tourists and expats. However, most of this prosperity doesn't trickle down to locals (you can genuinely see the cost of living being way higher in the sacred valley versus the plethora of other valleys that surround Cusco)
One thing my mom has noticed is how uninvolved expats are in community meetings where local issues are addressed in her specific community. People who have lived for many years in the same community simply don't attend or contribute. Other issues include people with severe mental health problems who are looking for spiritual retreats as a one-size-fits-all solution, when clearly they need professional psychological help (there's expats who have gone homeless, burned down a house, had breakdowns where they've be racist to locals, etc).
Anyhow: my advice to anyone interested in bridging this gap is to take part in your community, engage with the locals more (if you aren't doing so). Taxation is basically nonexistent in the valley, so many rural communities resort to crowdfunding or communal work to build public works and infrastructure. If you're doing well, give something back (the Ayni andean way of reciprocating is very common in the valley).
Thank you so much for this, this is amazing information. I am constantly trying to figure out how to bridge the gap with locals here. I have noticed the more gentrification, the more the locals kind of pull away from foreigners. The town I am outside now is particularly difficult, but I am starting to connect deeper. I bring a lot of business and make it a point to hire people born in raised from the sacred valley to put more money in their hands. I want to make this area better for the locals, because right now it is hard for them

I visited Peru a bit over a year ago (Arequipa/Cusco), and stayed with my friend and her family. They had never met me before, but they welcomed me with open arms. It was a very authentic experience, one I'll never forget. Your second benefit resonates with me, the people there were so friendly with me and treated me kindly, even if I was a foreigner who barley spoke any Spanish. A local there told me foreigners visiting there were hit or miss, but really appreciated how I tried my best to respect their culture and people, and it shows. That comment really stuck with me. Treat others kindly and with respect, and you'll get the same treatment. Not really sure where I'm going with this, but I really enjoyed my time there and its something I'll never forget.
It's really cool you're able to live there! Of course it has its cons like anywhere else, but I'm sure its been a positive experience nonetheless. Thanks for the video, it brought some nice memories back to me.
It is so awesome that you have spent time here in Peru, and I am so glad I could bring some memories back for you, honestly, it has been such an amazing experience living here, all the bad things are minor. The people always make the place, and aside from a few weird “gringos” the people here are on another level

Peru is not a desert, only the coast is considered a desert. The sacred valley is actually a valley located in a high altitude jungle.
I actually did a lot research after your comment, yes some parts are considered high altitude jungle. Other parts I am having difficult finding classification on, other parts are said to be “Dry, cold, typical climate for valleys” I would love to read your source! To me it appears to be a desert from what I learned in university but that doesn’t in any way mean I’m right
Technically, the Andean mountain region is considered a desert. Desert is not only cactuses or sand dunes. Yes, there are valleys, but is like saying that the coast is not a dessert because it also has valleys and rivers.
I definitely appreciate the clarification here on this. That's what I thought too. I find there isn't much documentation on many things here in Peru from the climate to local animals insects and plants. Thank you for clearing this up for me
@@mambokambo You won't find international classifications accurate to Peru, because of the unique climate and geographic region, no other place in the world has quite the same confluence of weather and geography we have here.
@@jaimexcas No, only the coast. Once you reach places like Cusco its not a desert. If it rains = not a desert. The coast doesn't have almost any rain. Cusco has a rainy and dry season.

Honestly Argentina is super high on my list of places to go 🙏🏻🔥 I’m only visiting here because I have a wedding to go to but I’m thinking a few months from now I want to visit Argentina since it’s so close to me

@@mambokambo I never been to Peru. My cousin in Argentina said Peru was terrible but he didn't tell me why. I will assume he just felt out of place in a non eurocentric environment. That's just my guess.
It could be, I think it depends on where you go too, Iquitos is ROUGH, although I love it, it can be a tough time. It's definitely not for everyone either. If you want well developed, peru isn't your place unless you are staying in MIraflores, Lima lol

If you make US 3,000 for a home office job, you will have a very comfortable living in Peru, it would be like 12,000 soles, which is a lot even for a single person.
Yeah it’s ALOT of money here. The minimum to count for a retirement visa here is 1500 per month passive income for a married couple. 3000 as long as you’re smart gets you so far
US dollar definitely goes a long way in Peru. Wish the price of goods was that cheap in the US.

You should specify that you live in a tiny valley outside of Cusco and Perú is a huge country. Ur living in a very rural area, like deep Mississippi or something like that. Also that part is not a desert, only the coast is.
It is a rather large country you are right, I probably should do that. I’ll make sure to make that distinction.
Id consider the area I’m currently in to be rather not rural though, however I am really close to the rural world too. About a 10 minute drive from farmland.
The desert thing is interesting, I’ve heard mixed reviews on it. What type of climate would you consider it? I can’t find a differebt biome that I’d consider a better description 🤔but also I do admit desert doesn’t sit perfectly either
yo bro, this is a crazy coincidence, I'm british and peruvian mixed, but I'm born in the sacred valley, spent about a year there with my family when I was about 10. Came back to Peru right now, in Miraflores. Always rememeber sacred valley being beautiful

I think you will too, I haven’t heard the best things about Arequipa from the locals, but I haven’t. Cusco is 10/10. Definitely check out Lima (Miraflores specifically) too if you can

People here say it’s dangerous with all the Venezuelans moving in. I don’t know why that’s being said but that something almost all of the Peruvians say. Many locals are moving out of Arequipa

You’re probably right, I speak Spanish relatively well so I didn’t even insider it if I’m honest. Also I know a ton of people who live here that don’t speak a word. I don’t think that’s necessarily a good thing, however it is an obstacle that can be overcame easily
Language was not a barrier for an English speaking person only. Consider using a translator on your smart phone.
Fair enough, I figured most watchers of mine were English speakers, but I will say the translator has got me in a bit of trouble here. Tons of words are different in Peru like avocado or ginger for example ( normally aguacate y jengibre ) here it’s palta y kión respectively

Looking into living in Peru for a few months.
Currently I am in the sacred valley about 2 hours from the nearest airport (CUZ) , i absolutely love it here. You should definitely check it out if you have time 🙏🏻

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, people everywhere seemed to have become more doggy. If the locals know you are not one of them, but playing on their turf, and you might have income that multiplies when converted locally, jealousy is an all too human reaction.

The tone of this comment isn't really the best in my opinion. People immigrate everyday and take jobs all over the world. I think we have to do our best not to disrupt anyones financial ecosystem, but we also have to do what we need to do to protect and feed our families as well

I can see the validity in both arguments, however, classifying an action based on color of skin is racism, I don't permit or condone that on this channel.
