What I love about Akira's soundtrack is that it's wooden percussion. Literally the lowest tech musical instrument, hitting wood against wood. Contrasting this with the high-tech near-future visuals turns it from a story about the future to being a story about the entirety of human history, so that when the ending happens and it's revealed to be exactly that, the end and rebirth of the universe, it doesn’t feel like a rug pull.
With Ghost in the Shell one, Akira's OST is one of the most beautiful tunes Japan ever released. From France, thank you Japan. PS With Yamaoka's work on Silent Hill games too, once again thank you Japan.

I always think of the anachronism of apocalyptic fiction of something like Fallout. The whole idea of being "bombed into the stone age"
