Even as a seasoned gamer™ getting into Destiny 2, who also played the first game years ago, there are things in Destiny 2 that confused even me, getting into it recently. Stuff like aspects are never explained, you just have to look it up online. Even some quests and item descriptions are super vague and are worded exclusively in lore-speak, so you have to look up what/who/where it's talking about. Also, literally every location on the director has a glowing yellow icon next to it, I think because of the season objectives, but even after removing the trackers (or so I thought) they are still there. One thing I learned in this video is that the radar has different shades of red when enemies are above/below you. I'm colorblind so I literally would've never noticed (I don't like using the colorblind accessibility options because then everything else looks funky).

@@oxsila “few annoying problems” Yeah yeah true only a few minor inconveniences such as getting rid of the entire base game and expansions that players paid for. Among other very MINOR things of course right?
@@spacetaco048 At no point did I say the annoying problems were minor inconveniences. I recommend you stop schizo replying. The annoying problems Destiny 2 has are nothing compared to the improvements in quality of life and many other things it's made on Destiny 1. I get that the problems Destiny 2 has annoy you so much that they make you ignore all the good the game has, but it's obviously gonna have a tonne of improvements that Destiny 1 can't compete with because Destiny 1 obviously is a game that stopped updating itself because a sequel was made. No one's stopping you from playing Destiny 1 though. But the more polished gunplay etc exists in Destiny 2. More engaging mechanics. The list can go on and on. This is in my top 10 most entertaining TH-cam videos ever and highly relatable after helping many a new player in games. Thank you for all your hard work, and kudos to you Amy for having the fortitude to press on. The bit about her running support class healer in games hit hard for me. One of our buddies wife's couldn't shoot in borderlands games so she just looted everything, dropped turrets, and revived us through the first two games. After quests she's drop all the loot she collected for us in a big pile. 😂
I have to say that, sometimes players need to have this kind sharing/supporting mind sets more when they play coop, especially they are playing with newbies. A lot of "game bros" are full of themselves nowadays.
@@Seoul_Soldier Lodging a complaint is how things improve, you don't complain or act nothing changes this video needs changing, hence the complaint. Amy complaining about being embarrassed because she can't play as well as the others was really relatable for me. I've never had any friends who play online games and I miss out on a lot of content in Destiny because I'm simply too afraid to play with random people. I know I'm not super good at the game even though I've been playing since the taken king, and I'm just ashamed of not knowing all the mechanics by heart. I wish there was a way to play more of the activities solo instead of having matchmaking as the only option.
Don't feel too bad. I've been playing since Forsaken. I remember when I still didn't understand how champions worked or what champion mods did 😅. It definitely took me a minute to understand how everything worked and even longer for me to complete a raid with people. I remember watching a lot if videos to get a better understanding of how things worked and slowly I got a lot better at the game. I would say that if you have an idea for what you want to play as see if there is a build video for it and you can take some ideas from there. I can understand wanting to play solo though it can be very stressful playing with other people especially if you're doing a hard activity. I would still recommend trying it though. Try doing something simple like a nightfall so you can feel comfortable talking abd then maybe move up too a dungeon or an exotic mission so you can begin learning about mechanics.
Same. Played for years and never had people to play with. A handful of exceptions with clan mates for a couple of raids but that's it. Always being the guy who doesn't know what they're doing and slowing things for everyone is painful if you're that guy. And LFG is a hot mess unless you already know how to do the content.
@starhawk3657 honestly Datto's build videos are pretty good. Sure most of them are a bit dependent on seasonal mods but they generally work outside of that and are a great place to start. He also has a video on how the build system itself works which is pretty good
I had a friend who I introduced to the game, who hadn't played an FPS game before. I know, I'm a terrible friend. I got them into it, and they instantly fell in love with the graphics, lore and gameplay. It was fun to run around and shoot aliens and sling space magic. I had a new Hunter to train. Then the Humble Bundle sale happened. They couldn't quite buy it, so I bought it for them. Within a week, they had maxed out the season pass and was dying to get into a raid or dungeon. So we did a duo run of Prophecy. Easy Phalanx one phase, but we wiped a couple times to Kell. Once I realised they weren't using Trapper's Ambush (they had Omni on. I guess I didn't check because.. I automatically assumed they'd put it on. It was a mistake on my part as a more experienced player), I told them to switch to it, and the moment they did, we easily beat the Kell Echo. They hit almost 2mil damage with Dragon's Breath and that one Cartesian that Banshee was selling a while back. I'm proud of my friend, they learned so fast. I don't think I can quite call them a New Light anymore.
A touching story as it's great to hear about new players joining the ranks, but I'm confused about your gross misuse of the term they and them and while I can already assume why you're using this incorrect language I couldn't help but point it out. I hope he/she (your friend) is still enjoying destiny
“Maybe employee of the month, maybe a surprise layoff from upper management”.. goddamn Jez with the heater! I actually yelled out loud “oh shit” when I heard that
This is the second video I've seen of somebody taking a non gamer through the beginner experience in Destiny 2, and I need more of it. Getting reminded of these new to gaming moments is quite nostalgic.
That was adorable. The fact that she was willing to do this for 11 days for you speaks volumes about her as a person and a partner. Wishing you guys all the best. BTW if she hasn't watched this video, kindly do a reaction video. It'd be entertaining to watch her realise the various options in the game she wasn't aware of. Also, just because she loved using handcannons, give her a dragonfly / firefly handcannon for a couple of hours (Fatebringer will do). Poppimg heads and causing massive explosions will change her entire perspective of the gun play.
This was absolutely riveting in a really hard to explain way. Really makes you take a step back and realize the things (and not just in gaming) that I take for granted. I may understand something inherently because of my past experiences, but someone else in that same situation may not understand it, even if they are perfectly equipped to handle it. Simply an amazing test/experiment (one I would NEVER put my SO through if I hope to keep her around though lol). I would be VERY interested to see what any game dev, and especially a Destiny dev, would say about this after watching. Well done!
The lack of "Equip your stuff!" prompts on Day 2 is ABOSLUTELY a bug. When I tried out the New Light content, I recall being immediately forced to equip new weapons when I got them, even if I didn't want to use it. Can't say the same for the Subclass or Armor stuff though, because I genuinely don't remember if they teach that all. Also her taste for Pulse Rifles and Swords is mega based.
I am an experienced gamer and Amy is a whole mood. I had so many of the same feelings about things. These are the kind of play testers game studios need.
This is probably one of the best and funniest videos from Jez I've seen and it hits so close to home as I just took someone brand new to Destiny all the way through every campaign and dungeon and watching him work all this stuff out with some prompts from me, he has gotten so much better at the game. But wow, watching him get there was both hilarious and maddening.
I remember I did this with my sister about 2 years ago (she was 16 at the time and her only experience was shooters specifically is with Fortnite) She made a Titan and at least had better time controlling the character but when it came to fighting the Fallen she also got scared and had a little trouble. She made it through the first mission though and that was all she did. Was pretty proud to see her get that far and it was an interesting experience to watch
unironically one of the best videos I’ve seen on yt in months. Funny, informative, and paced very well. It was cool to see the side of people who never played video games. Also I don’t know how you never told her anything. Any time I ever shows someone a game as a kid (like my parents) I couldn’t help but give hints every minute or so. Really hope y’all do another one of these. Would be hilarious if you all played together and got her to do a raid or something. Maybe a dungeon or nightfall with you and datto would be better but I also think her and Danielle’s banter would be funny
I'm glad I stumbled upon this video as I just started this game just last night (mostly because of the DLC being on ps plus this month). Now I will admit that while I'm not an absolute beginner, my fps skills are pretty below average for a typical gamer. The only one I've ever completed on my own was the latest Doom sequel a few years ago. Anyway the amount of times I legitimately said "wait what!?" out loud while watching this was pretty eye opening. I had apparently missed tons of seemingly important info about key gameplay mechanics and other basic stuff that may have taken me much longer to understand otherwise. Great video!
Yeah sadly, it's definitely one of those games that you need a vet coaching you on how to play to your full potential. I don't play the game anymore, but I hope you can find a good person or community to help you out if you continue.
unironically this didnt feel like an hour and a half. amy is just so wholesome and it was really cool seeing how she learned and progressed in under 2 weeks. i couldn't imagine trying to get into destiny right now, and definitely not now that i've seen how they choose to introduce new lights to almost a decade of story lmao amy is such a trooper!
This is probably the funniest youtube video I've ever watched. I was LITERALLY LOLing. Love that you made this so enjoyable with the comedy, and also pointed out the GLARING problems with getting new players into the game. It's sad really.
I said this with the Lightfall story recap, but I always appreciate Jez when he's putting in thoughtful analysis instead of playing the funny clueless guy to Datto's smahts persona. Looking forward to more.
I love the feedback from the view of a new player. Almost every point makes so much sense in hindsight, but I would never think about them when playing the same content.
The perspective that this video gives is amazing. Entertaining and informative and you did a good job with this. And Amy was a trooper through this all.
Never related to a video more. Destiny was really my first console game and took me ages to learn the very very basics. When people ask me if I played D1 I let them know I was never able to finish the campaign (started about 3 mos before D2 came out). I played solo for years and finally hired a fiveer coach for pvp but really had to backtrack to fireteam and discord basics. Big shoutout to my D2 clan and friends (3 years later) that took the time to explain basics to me. Huge shoutout to Amy ❣️, Jez owes you big time (and it’s a great vid Jez made it to the end)
Bungie needs to do this every three months or so just to see where the game is at and how they can improve the game for new players. This gave SO much good information, awesome info and hopefully you both had fun with it.
@@RenegadePlayingGamesAt current point in gaming handholding is so overdone that most games would benefit with less of it. Destiny 2 also suffering from problem of most MMOs with absurd lack of difficulty of non endgame levels.
Really great video! I've for sure met a bunch of blueberries in the past who clearly not only didn't understand Destiny, but struggled to comprehend games as a whole and had to be hand-held through objectives in activities. I feel like somewhere near the screen-adjustment settings upon opening the game it should prompt the following questionnaire to customize the learning experience based on prior gaming knowledge of each new player. "Have you played games in the same genre as DestinyTM before?" Yes / No / I don't recall "How detailed would you prefer tutorial prompts appear?" Guide Me There / Give Me Hints "How often would you like to receive these popups?" Always / Very frequently / Less Frequently I feel like this could be helpful. I can't remember for the life of me what game it was, but I once played a game that outright asked for your noob status at the start with: "Have you played games like this before?" and tailored the tutorial to meet your potential needs in the intorduction.
Jez, I'm so glad you made this video. Hope it gains traction, ppl(myself included) have been saying the onboarding for new players in this game is abysmal. Hearing Amy's struggles because things simply weren't told or hinted to her is a highlight of what a lot of new players likely struggle with. God bless her for putting up with it!
Guardians, if you see a rank 1 player coming out of that passage in the cosmodrome, it’s your responsibility to greet them with a multiplayer emote. Only a small fraction even recognize you want them to interact. It’s actually quite cute.
I’m glad to see someone else getting frustrated by the simultaneous overload and lack of info starting Destiny 2, along with the white arrow sometimes pointing two feet in front of you and sometimes a few miles ahead through mountainous terrain. And I’ve even played videogames before.
Having taken my wife from non gamer to very competent D2 partner, this hit different. I know what you felt Jez... and I respect you for staying silent.
Props to your Mrs. She's a real trooper and a great sport. Also it must have been hard not keep jumping in to help. I used to do the same with my kids when they were little ❤😊
I didn't know what "Crit" was when I first started playing vanilla Destiny. I still don't ever pay attention to buffs and debuffs unless absolutely necessary.
Oh yeah, Jez. The room that you get teleported into after you find Maeve's Ghost is not a bug. That's actually meant to force you to use the Director because I remember getting a popup prompt for it when running the NL quest on a new Guardian. Also bc my friend saw it too when he started.
This is quite relatable for when I was a New Light, and I went through multiple fireteam teachers before I left the game a few years ago due to seeing Cayde dead and being filled with stress after the Curse of Osiris campaign. I got back two months ago and started with a new Hunter & Warlock, but still had my rank. It’s adorable seeing Amy go through an experience like this in Destiny 2 and each moment left me to think or laugh, just like my early days of Destiny being a New Light. I hope you two see this because this made this day so much better and made me appreciate everyone who worked on Destiny 2 as a whole. And also, props to Amy for making it through the process like a true Guardian!
That thrall room scared the shit out of my wife too, pretty sure that was exactly her response to that room. And she's a gamer and I was giving her tips not just letting her fumble through it
I did something similar making my brother play this game for the first time. Needless to say, I had to explain 90% of the UI and mechanics just to even get hin through 1 lost sector. It also didn't help that the mission tracker disappears from time to time and he forgets he can just pull up his ghost to find the tracker again. Also, the public event and patrol markers often confuse him into thinking that they're the mission trackers because I told him "just follow the floating diamond" 💀
"Why is everyone so average? I just want to be hot." I hope the game industry is paying attention. We don't play games to be average, we play games to be hot.
7:46 Tbf, I think there’s a common sense factor when it comes to using guns that the devs shouldn’t have to explain in vivid detail. 9:31 well, again, the devs aren’t going to accommodate for players who have no idea how basic video game mechanics work. Most gamers with somewhat common sense, and a good amount of experience, see these things really quickly and are likely the players who stick around whereas players like your wife aren’t gonna stick around because it’s likely too advanced of a game for people to get right away if they’re totally new to the video game industry, and they’re gonna get bored fast. This is why the tutorial isn’t absurdly in depth or long. It will bore the player base they’re going for who know the basic concept of aiming down sights, health bars, energy bars, crit spots, etc. this isn’t to criticize anyone, but just saying. 9:40 well that’s the thing, you use elden ring as an example, which was a game made to be more accessible and more targeted towards new players of the souls genre. Destiny not so much, and it’s a first person shooter with very vibrant and very flashy energy bars that gamers they’re targeting will notice really quickly.
If only Amy knew her frustrations with the game (or any) are virtually the same as those of us who've been playing it for nearly a decade STRAIGHT 😂💪💪💪
I knew it was difficult to get into Destiny, but this really opened my eyes. Also, props to Amy for committing all these hours into destiny! And the editing of this beautiful video.
This is like when I got my twin sister into Destiny. She got tired of people running through strikes pulling her so she didn’t know where to go. So her son and I went with her for a while and my job was to heal and freeze everything as a stasis warlock so she could not die and practice her aim. (She was a hunter).
that room at the end of day one is supposed to have a pop up tutorial to show the player what fast traveling is so they can get out, but is currently bugged and just drops people in without an explanation
I really appreciate how you let her explore the game on her own without taking the reigns too much. That is what I feel makes the game so memorable for me. Esp seeing the dreaming city for the first time with all its mystery.
This is actually very informative about how new players actually feel in this game. Bungie should watch and maybe take notes. But anyway, this video was hilarious, I love you jez.
This reminds me so much of when my partner introduced me to Destiny 10 years ago. It went about the same. Now im blasting GM nightfalls with buddies. She's got this.
17:33 first time I reached this location the lightning effects didn’t load and it looked like a normal pathway….. I proceeded to die to invisible death💀
This is probably the best D2 commentary ever created. :) As someone whose spouse isn't a gaming, I can totally related. Your sacrifice of time was well worth it!
It's a VERY close race, but this is definitely a contender for my favorite Jez video - which is WILD, since there's really no live content. Very good job
I did get put in the box of shame during the new light campaign, but my brother told me how to get out. Then, during "Cold Boot," the mission soft locked. If my brother hadn't told me it was prone to bugging, I may have quit right there. Bugs are irritating in general, but at least experienced players are equipped to handle them. The state of the new light campaign is not acceptable, "Cold Boot soft locks frequently, everyone chooses Hunter because they look the coolest but also happen to be the least new player friendly, and the prompts and story are counterproductive and unhelpful to learning, imagine someone hearing that "Fallen thrive in the dark" and thinking it was relevant to gameplay. New light campaign needs work it will almost certainly never get.
The screen bounds thing just moves the HUD closer to the middle; it doesn't put a black border around the picture or shrink the image. Lots of folks make it as small as possible to keep the hud closer in their periphery.

@@RenegadePlayingGames I'm ngl, the radar thing was new for me too. I always knew there was a distinction between "nearby" and "right on your ass" but never an elevation distinction

She's hilarious, you too, and this was great. First video in ages I didn't skip around and watched the whole thing. Considering the length of it, that says something. Keep it up!
this is MUST watch for any game devs
Truly i love these kinds of series cause even as veterans we can demand more from our games. Its hard to change this but sheesh they put so much energy into all these things just for them frustrate newbies and leave us with frustrationing controls or worthless procedures
Especially Bungie devs!

They need to start adjusting promotions to adjust for the content players have completed or have access to. It's embarrassing seeing big content creators outside of Destiny try it and be hit with like 10 popups before they've even loaded in

Yeah yeah true only a few minor inconveniences such as getting rid of the entire base game and expansions that players paid for.
Untilt yourself AND remove the nostalgia goggles and i'm sure you'll see it too
This is in my top 10 most entertaining TH-cam videos ever and highly relatable after helping many a new player in games.
"I like blue"

Do you play on PC xbox or ps? I will gladly play either destiny with you if you want. I play on xbox
wait so you have a way of typing this message but you cant just look up the wiki or look up videos on what the mechanics do?
@starhawk3657 honestly Datto's build videos are pretty good. Sure most of them are a bit dependent on seasonal mods but they generally work outside of that and are a great place to start. He also has a video on how the build system itself works which is pretty good
I love how this is just jez being proud of his wife the video absolutely love it
I had a friend who I introduced to the game, who hadn't played an FPS game before.
That’s so sweet 😍

BTW if she hasn't watched this video, kindly do a reaction video. It'd be entertaining to watch her realise the various options in the game she wasn't aware of.

Bro this narrative was HIGHLY entertaining thank you for this
This is probably one of the best and funniest videos from Jez I've seen and it hits so close to home as I just took someone brand new to Destiny all the way through every campaign and dungeon and watching him work all this stuff out with some prompts from me, he has gotten so much better at the game. But wow, watching him get there was both hilarious and maddening.
Don't think ever watched an hour+ TH-cam video before. Testament to the entertainment of this - good job mate, subbed!
Bro, I'm so proud of Amy, she's so awesome to actually do this
I remember I did this with my sister about 2 years ago (she was 16 at the time and her only experience was shooters specifically is with Fortnite)
She made a Titan and at least had better time controlling the character but when it came to fighting the Fallen she also got scared and had a little trouble.

"Have you played games in the same genre as DestinyTM before?" Yes / No / I don't recall
"How detailed would you prefer tutorial prompts appear?" Guide Me There / Give Me Hints
"How often would you like to receive these popups?" Always / Very frequently / Less Frequently
I feel like this could be helpful. I can't remember for the life of me what game it was, but I once played a game that outright asked for your noob status at the start with: "Have you played games like this before?" and tailored the tutorial to meet your potential needs in the intorduction.

I just want to be hot."
I hope the game industry is paying attention.
This video is fascinating. All of the assumptions made by the devs that most gamers never even think about.
My Lady is going through the same journey though further along, I hope you two are having a blast prepping for the Final Shape!

As a Destiny player and husband, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I laughed out loud many times. Thank you.

The screen bounds thing just moves the HUD closer to the middle; it doesn't put a black border around the picture or shrink the image. Lots of folks make it as small as possible to keep the hud closer in their periphery.
