I doubt they owned the cottage so probably the landlord was the one who they actually punished.

I can't imagine what he went through. I wonder why they didn't fill the hole back in then it might not have been found. Interesting post.

First I thought Martha to be of low mental faculties, making such a poor and amateurish job of getting rid of both the victim and the murder weapon.
But her very gracious act towards Mary following her death sentence, rather shows how desperate (and maybe drunk, too) this woman must have been.
Ach, and this is why you go to see the wise woman about a toad, Martha. What a mess...I like the idea of her being billhook buddies with her fellow ghost, it's cute. The days before divorce was easily available to common folk (women especially) were certainly wild: I personally know two people whose great-grandmothers were quietly known to have offed drunken/violent husbands, and I can well believe that Martha would have trusted her best friend to help bury both the body and the story.
