Rwanda, M23, and the battle for DR Congo’s Goma | The Take

- Bodies are lining the streets of Goma, and hospitals are overwhelmed after an escalation in the long-simmering conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The Rwandan-backed M23 group claims it took control of the city, and the DRC has called it a declaration of war by Rwanda. But why is Rwanda involved and what are its interests?

I don’t know why I see this Army called M23 is more professional in everything they’re doing 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Once you have the real reason to fight the rubbish government none will stop you
I love them , so disciplined that Congolese army
M23 should be army of Congo as they are Congolese
M23 .... M- stand for match and 23 stand for the date , match 23 is when this group launched its first attack .
Discipline and fighting for the lives of their loved ones while the DRC army is fighting for the interests (Money) of their officials and European companies that pay them and because of that they dont have even a loyal army, and when the low ranking soldiers try to fight for the rights of their people they are killed by their own generals (read the story about the commander who was killed for 15,000$ by his own generals because he refused the army to loot the people who were under his batalions control)

This guy is not telling the truth. Most people you invite, why can't you ask them a question like this: M23 is composed by young people from East DRC who have been living in refugees camps for 30 years across the region, why congo doesn't resolve a problem of those refugees and those who are being killed, burned and eaten because of their tribes? They can't give you an answer. What they bring on table is: Rwanda is supporting m23, why they can't tell the root cause of the conflict.
So you are telling the world that finally refugees are fighting against the government that gave them a place to stay and establish themselves?
You are misled by misleading people from the truth based on the history and all the events that have been happening for 30 years now.
We all need peace since people are dying and not stupid comments and accusations, which resolve nothing.
What you actually described is what M23 is doing to congolese
South Africa has refugees who have been there for 20+ years and does not easily give them citizenship and waits to kick them out one day should things in their country change. DRC should have adopted the same law.
@@SoulUpliftIgnitingInspiration did you answer my question?
@SoulUpliftIgnitingInspiration can you show us any refugee camps in the Democratic Republic of Congo? You have to educate yourself, Congo has no one to kick out. Those who are supposed to be ckicked out are helping the government to commit the crime of eliminating innocent citizens because of their tribes. Congo government is associated with a group genocidal from Rwanda. How can you resolve the conflict if you are denying some citizens' rights of existing.
We are people that lives both in north and south of Congo and for you guys to dedicate the whole show on minerals instead of the people is telling! They are people that have been displaced for last 20 years and I don’t hear any discussion about it
It's unfortunate when journalists already support and propagate a specific narrative while carry out their professional work.
I am surprised there is no mention of the accusations against DRC for the persecution of Tutsi's in DRC. I have been searching for a wholistic perspective to this issue. But most journalists these days are simply frontiers of one predetermined perspective or the other.
They never ask questions that would give any sort of credit to the other perspective.
We can't solve humanity's problems this way, polarizing ourselves against ones another.
I believe journalism should be based on truths irrespective of which side gets hurt, and not merely a professional tool to front predetermined perspective and political agendas.
According to you, why is this conflict happening, and causing to much chaos, including displacement of Congo citizens? What is the real reason, according to you.

Discuss the real cause of the conflict and not about mines and minerals and who is supporting who. Congolese Authorities need to tell themselves the truth and solve the ethic problems in Eastern Congo.
The mineral is the cause of all these!
Why since 1885 until 1996, the time Kagame and Museveni invaded the DRC and plundered resources and in the process killed millions of Congolese, why all these people had peace and prospered. It is no secret that many Banyarwanda actively oppose Kagame, believing that he has disrupted their peace. Many have publicly stated that he does not represent them and should not involve them in his destructive agenda.
Where is our army (DRC), and why are they not capable of pushing back the M23 rebels?
Corrupted government and lack of self governance in the DRC that's the problem. Once we solve this issue and then we can deal with other issues.
@dreamealityabraham_dacruz5055 could be lack or funding and resources. The West needs DRC to remain destabilized so that they can continue to take minerals at a fraction of the price from Rwanda

@@Kapa_sound We need to stop this behaviour of blaming foreign countries for our problems. We should hold our leaders accountable.
@@makongorowassira6593 So Many Problems Indeed
I have few observations. DRC is too big for Kinshasa government to govern. DRC is a creation of King Leopold, so most congolese don't have a sense of patriotism/nationalism. This is illustrated by how Congolese soldiers are willing to give up so fast on battlefield. This is also why Kinshasa has to recruit mercenaries because people from Katanga for example don't feel like the people in the east have anything in common. Patrice Lumumba wanted to create a national identity like the one Julius Nyerere created because Tanzania is also a country that was created by colonials but Nyerere was able to create a solid national identity with Swahili being a cornerstone. Unfortunately, Belgium wanted to continue to exploit Congo even after the country got independence, so they used Mobutu to get rid of Lumumba who did not want to have anything to do with Belgium. The timing was also bad for Patrice because of the cold war. To Americans, his policies sounded like Soviet Union's. Therefore, Congo's lack of national unity and its rich minerals that are in high demand by superpowers are the source of its misery. People always talk about Congolese governments being corrupt. I don't think they are more corrupt than other African countries. They just lack of a leader who can connect them either by infrastructure or other means. Maybe one day, another Patrice Lumumba will emerge, but for now the country will continue to be a battlefield for different countries and factions. People might wonder why South Africa is making noise about the Congolese issue. Trust me on this, they are not in eastern Congo for peacekeeping mission as Ramaphosa says. They are there to protect South African mining companies. And my guess is that when M23 took over the area that includes mining sites, South African soldiers tried to fight and in the process some of their soldiers lost their lives. I hope Ramaphosa has a good explanation to the deceased soldiers' families. When will Africa learn to solve their problems without killing each other?
Congo is for Africa first, all African countries should support Congo.

@@25eyal17no the truth just slipped out of his mouth that he associates M23 with Rwanda otherwise why would you say the very same thing Rwanda is trying so hard to deny. Could it be the allegiance of the Kinyarwanda have now turned towards Rwanda. They diligently collect taxes and pay Rwanda they obediently mine for them. In these 30 years their identity could have changed it’s a possibility. Re-integration of displaced groups of people can constitute a national security threat. I would only be in favour of re-integration after de rwandafication camps and schools are built.
The fault is of Maputo who stripped them of their citizenship.
@ you just someone who clearly is from far away and don’t know the underlying cause of this conflict
First the eastern congo is 80% ethnically Rwandan for hundreds of years those Rwandans have been extremely killed by the Belgians and congolese of the west due to their allegiance to Germany which left them after the first world war loss, this went on with banyarwanda people marginalised and now divided ( after the Belgium take over of Rwanda all banyarwanda people were divided in three ethnicity: hutu,Tutsi,Twa) when we say banyarwanda we also include the barundi people because Burundi and Rwanda are actually the same people the difference is that the colonizers made sure that when they gave Burundi and Rwanda independence which at that time were one country, they made sure Burundi government was tutsi and Rwanda was hutu to create two different countries which is what happened. So that division went on and in Congo it had no big impact as banyarwanda people(barundi) of congo were a minority and had a vast territory for them to not necessarily fight
This all ended when the tension between the two ethnic group(hutu and tutsi) erupted after years of killing in burundi and in Rwanda. the genocide of tutsi happened with involvement of Burundian Hutus too who had freed burundi during the massacre of Burundi an Hutus too by the tutsi.
So after another the genocide was stopped (by RPA a Tutsi rebel groups that time) the majority hutu went in congo and some continued to kill and displace the tutsi banyarwanda of congo which is why to this day the conflict is not solved and would result in a mass killing if people don’t stop the hate. As even today the country I said m Rwanda, Congo and Burundi are still the mostly involved
@
That is not the point. You're litigating what happened in the past. The colonialists left under Mputo who refused to acknowledge them as Congolese. The issue as of now is the M23 rebel's mission to integrate with the current population. They are fighting for their rights and want their land back. Unfortunately, Congolese society is not ready for this it has been about 30 years they fear that M23 will go through the route of retribution and feel they will be discriminated against just like how they discriminated against them.
It is really sad that this whole interview was void of substance. Historical, current, and future. He never (1) Acknowledge the fact that M23 (Banyamulenge) are Congolese, (2) That the very Congolese govt had brought in mercenaries and arm twisted (bribed) couple of African Govt forces (Burundi & SouthAfrica) recruited well known genocidaires (FDLR) to basically exterminate their fellow country men and women based on ethnicity. Rwanda has over 200k Banyamulenge refugees because of this never ending conflict. All over Western media they bring in a Congolese sympathiser to beat on the drum of 'Blame Rwanda,’ with no rebuttal from the Rwandan side. All these discussions are premised with 'blaming Rwanda' and in the process loosing the core basis of the problem. What about the butchery of the Congolese of Tutsi tribal affiliation? The discussions always circumvent this catastrophic humanitarian issue. Yet when M23 choose to say enough is enough, all of a sudden it is Rwanda that is causing destabilisation in the Great Lakes. This issue will never be solved unless the DRC govt agrees to have M23 on the table to have serious discussion, (instead of through the barrel of a gun), about assimilating it's own country men/women. We know how and why the western media through the 'drum beat' of their govts play these Machiavelli machinations. As Africans, proud Africans, we need to search ourselves very deeply about how we learn to respect, trust and engage each other. I respect and trust the Rwandan govt. They have consistently displayed, by words and definitely by deeds, actions that warrant my utmost respect and trust. 🇷🇼🇷🇼🇷🇼🇷🇼🇷🇼
If Congo doesn’t want Congolese speaking KiNya Rwanda then will be balcanisation , because is their Lands 😳
U miss the point that M23 are congolese fighting for their rights, don't be biased
Why and how has Rwanda been positioned at the center of this issue when? in reality, the core problem lies elsewhere? Whether Rwandan troops are in the DRC or not, the more pressing question remains: why is M23 fighting, and what are their demands? Instead of fixating on Rwanda’s alleged role, the DRC and the broader African community must critically examine the root causes of this conflict and seek a comprehensive solution. Addressing Rwanda’s stance alone will not resolve the crisis. Shouldn’t the international community also turn its attention to other regional actors, such as South Africa, Burundi, and Tanzania, to ensure a balanced and fair assessment?
So sad.I honestly feel for the innocent Congolese civilians. They are such a hardworking lot

M23 is rebels which is not from Rwanda but they're DRC people.
If Rwanda was the cause of this war , WHY is the people from the affected town of GOMA running seeking shelter/ refugee in Rwanda .
We saw DRC soilders surrender weapons and Rebels are in charge of the town but Government of DRC is denying this information WHY .
Rwanda might have interest or benefits after or during this fight BUT i think on my opinion they've nothing to do with this.
This fight is about tribes and territory among DRC peoples of which there's same tribe of people of this in RWANDA thus why Rwanda is being mentioned here .
You're talking about M23 but yesterday we saw media conference AFC(Alliance).
What AFC mean to you?
My advice to invited guest is to conduct research & join AFC/M23.
We have 200 militia groups in DRC... Why M23?
FARDC should disarm FDLR, Rwanda will be out of this conflict.
Haha Aljazeera funny as always !
And why are you watching their news? There's CNN AND BBC you can watch
M23 are Congolese, they are fighting for what is theirs
You always say about minerals in Eestern DRC, these people of DRC are poor than any one in this world. How can it be the mine profitable to Rwanda while DRC people are extremely poor? Again, he is not mentioning the persecution, citizenship denial, and oppression of the Congolese Rwandophone in profit of the genocidaire who fleed from Rwanda in 1994 and continue to spread the Ideology of the genocide against Tutsis. Citizens of Congo are denied and are refugees fleeing armed groups supported by the Government of Kinshansa. It is absurd to advance minerals while people are very poor in DRC. That's a pretext.
Sanction kagames crystal ventures company
M 23 is a congoles group fighting for their citenshep rights let Cagame be he is the best and smartes prisedent in Africa
The person interviewed is totally biased. Why are m23 fighting DRC government, why is the kinshasa government denying them voting rights.
Why is Rwanda protecting them? Because they are benefiting from the minerals?
Why big country such as DRC lost a battle in Goma? It was no answer
M23 is a Congolese movement fighting for their own survival in Congo as other Congolese communities.
Before I hear the take please try to give us a well balanced take. The person u have on is Congolese and one sided
Congo being in the middle of Africa was supposed to benefit the whole of Africa with its rich resources... unfortunately these riches attracted many foreigners and they country has never known peace in recent history...its a sad story for not just Congo but the whole of Africa...and to learn that Rwanda is assisting in the destabilising of DRC for their own benefits is so so disturbing
That is true!
why does this conversation not include the real reason why M23 exists and the Nyamurenge who have been under attack by the Congolese government and why did attacks to them started when Congo found the Eastern minerals
KAMBALE his corrupted Guy
He can’t says nothing of truth 🫢
This Man is lying. M23 are kinyarwanda speaking based in DRC due to colonial borders. They ended up on DRC site
This is so biased, why you don’t ask about hate speeches supported by Kinshasa leadership? All on records..
Why not asking about why Kinshasa doesn’t accept Kivu Rwandaphones as Congolese but support they killings?
Why do you think Rwanda is involved? I am not familiar with what is going on there and I never heard about those groups before. I just come across them Just today. But I am suspicious of you for keep saying Rwanda is involved with confidence while both Rwanda and M23 denied it.
Africa must deposit 70% of bank reserve to EU due to conference of Berlin treaties.. whist being mocked for poverty.

m23 is Rwandan and Ugandan backed, history don't have blank pages
@@TsietsiMotsoto who backs Fardc? M23 are the Congolese whatever you you will feel them
@@TsietsiMotsoto True history does not a blank page. The trouble is : you do not read any of them!!! Please read, if you can , the history of the region from the 1530s. Including the 1910 treaty on the region. You will know that you are 100 % wrong
U r sick ....read history? M23 are Congolese fighting for their rights
Very true 😂 Uganda must be having m23's biggest share
Then you need to go back and red history very well
They're not Rwandas they are tutsi Congolese
Conflicts in Africa need sober minds, truth and reconciliation. How can natural endowment be such a curse.
Rwanda will pay for this
Are members of M23 congolese or rwandans?
You gays you are confusing peaple pls stop nonsese m23 are congolese not rwandan
Rwanda at it again good lord
M23 rebels are Tutsi living in Congo. They Congolese not Rwandese. They are fighting to be treated just like other Congolese people.
Colonial borders created this problem.
Stop being MISLEADING people, Here lacks depth and fails to address the root causes of the issue. Instead of skimming the surface, provide a comprehensive analysis. How was M23 formed in the first place? What were its motives? Why did the DRC government resort to hiring mercenaries to fight fellow Congolese? What about DRC's Gov working with FDLR which committed Genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda back in 1994? Go beyond the headlines-discuss MONUSCO’s role, including incidents where they have been accused of killing people fighting for their freedom. Shed light on SAMIDRC’s unclear mission and provide a well-rounded perspective that allows followers to grasp the full picture. Otherwise, your approach risks being biased. Strive for a more thorough and balanced analysis next time, Kevin.
stop killing Tutsis in the Congo especially mulenge people in kuvu maybe this fight will end there’s no way you can denied someone’s rights because of how they look. The Congolese government killed my two cousins just because they look Tutsi now the m23 is fighting back because they have been marginalized for many years. It’s hasn’t been about minerals maybe now. In the Congo there’s a lot of xenophobia and tribalism like no other place. Pray for peace
