I literally did the same thing towards the end of last year. I happened to live across the street from a breakfast restaurant that participates in AA dining and I just bought coffee or a muffin for the most part and I was able to hit VIP status before the end of the year. I'm enjoying getting 5 AA miles per dollar spent now whenever I go to a participating restaurant. My only gripe is that most restaurants with AA dining has subpar food lol. But I gotta get those points 🤣
My dad is a 4 million mile lifetime platinum with AA. Hit it a looong time ago and still rarely flies AA anymore. AA is more expensive or less convenient than some other airlines like Southwest or Delta with the routes he flies to visit grandkids. So he spent all those miles and trips getting status and it’s not even worth it to him anymore and he’d rather just get the better flight instead of using the airline he’s got great status on forever. That shifted my mindset on chasing status because if the guy who loves comfort (my dad) has lifetime Platinum with AA and doesn’t even fly AA because of how worthless it is to him, then I won’t bother as a traveler who only travels for vacation a few times a year.
@@LukesPointsandMiles Eh not necessarily. When he flew for business it was a lot of trips to Texas so DFW being the big AA hub was great. But status now is so diluted and flights are so hub reliant that for him to get to SLC to visit us, PHX to see his in laws, and the Midwest for my sister he can’t do all AA without having obnoxious layovers. The industry has changed so much that he just wants to get the best deal without 2-3 layovers every trip.

Mileage runs at the end of the year to get to the next status tier used to be a fun activity. But the status programs are a joke now. They’re rewarding big spenders, not frequent fliers. This is the epitome of that. It was nice to hear Luke admit that upgrades are non-existent at the lower tiers.

You ain't lyin' about AA's tight connections. PHX and DFW are notorious! I remember running through DFW to make a 40 min connection which turned into 15 min since we were delayed, only to find out my connecting flight couldn't get fuel on the plane and had to deboard and wait for a spare 😂. Hope you get some good results and look forward to hearing about them 👍

Getting MCE seats for no additional cost is nice, especially when I book a Delta flight and use up my entire AMEX flight incidentals credit for an upgrade to Comfort+ on 1 flight! I’m Platinum Pro and I typically get upgraded around 75% of the time, even into and out of Charlotte. Probably 50/50 out of DFW but I fly into a small market. I love that Simply Miles and the Shopping Portal stacks. I like to use the Bilt Mastercard for every purchase through the Shopping Portal, Simply Miles, and AA dining. Since Bilt is the only transfer partner to AA, it further boosts the amount of AA miles that I can earn. If you’re not flying for a combination of international work and travel that makes earning status an actual benefit, just get a cash back card. You can only get into AA lounges on international flights if you’re below Admirals club level anyway. You will always be about 4-5 people down on the upgrade list if you’re flying a popular route also, kinda bogus opportunity there too.
I’m excited to see how many upgrades you get. I’ve had Gold this past year and I’ve gotten a few upgrades to first class on an hour flight so I decided it wasn’t worth it to try for gold again so I just use whatever portal has the best earnings.
I’ve definitely been guilty of going out of my way to eat at AA dining locations on occasion myself - I wanted to see what was different when you unlocked the 5x earning rate! The site said that more restaurants would become available when I hit that status, but I found literally no new locations. Still a cool program overall though.
You mentioned that having a cobranded credit card isn't necessary but wouldn't hurt. Their Platinum Select Master Card earns 2x points on dining (and gas). Would those miles stack on top of the miles earned in the Dining program? I didn't see an exclusion in the Ts&Cs.
Yeah those miles are earned in addition to other earnings. Remember with the co branded credit cards they are 1 loyalty point per dollar spent regardless of multiplier

Best news is that it's respectable Que too.

As someone who loves to travel a lot (2-3 times a month) I always find it curious why people who rarely travel chase status. They have some great benefits which they will rarely use.

The airlines got you hooked...and you're a sucker if you can't see that or do the math.
How much spending in terms of hard dollars is required to earn this many AA miles? I've found that loyalty programs are often geared towards couples or families, and that as a single person I just can't spend enough money, at least not organically and reasonably, to maximize the program. This is also true of credit card programs. For example, the earnings limit on the current Chase Freedom offer is $12k in the first year, for 60k UR. I'm just not buying $1,000/month of groceries and gas in the ordinary course of events, I'm spending more like 1/3 of that. I could of course load up on gift cards and essentially prepay my next 2-3 years of such expenses, but is that really a sound use of my money in return for that sweet UR?
I think gold status is 40k loyalty points. Spending on the portal @ 10x is $4k spending for the year. @ 12x that’s $3,334. Get great deals @ 15x and we’re down to $2667 for the entire year. There are also pump some bonuses like 5000 for a meal service. At the end of the day, spend based benefits are probably not great for folks with low spend. And let’s me real, if you have very low spend, you probably aren’t flying enough to benefit from airline status anyway

Lifetime Star Alliance Gold status because I am a United Million Miler saved me untold hours over 3 months in 11 European countries during the 2022 Covid chaos. I chased status, flying every other month to a different Asian country for years. 100% worth it. Those without lifetime status don't know what they are missing.

Depends on where you live. Gold status in Columbus still gets you upgraded.

I think gold status is 40k loyalty points. Spending on the portal @ 10x is $4k spending for the year. @ 12x that’s $3,334. Get great deals @ 15x and we’re down to $2667 for the entire year. There are also pump some bonuses like 5000 for a meal service. At the end of the day, spend based benefits are probably not great for folks with low spend. And let’s me real, if you have very low spend, you probably aren’t flying enough to benefit from airline status anyway

For AA Dining Should I link my Bilt or Amex Gold?
Bilt is 3x and Amex gold is 4x so I would say link whatever currency you want to earn

@@Jiggy609 well you’ll be earning 3-5 aa miles from the program and an additional 3 points that can be transferred to aa so I guess if you’re only interested in AA miles then bilt is the way to go.

Alaska frequently has cheaper redemptions than AA for AA flights! Both domestic and international.
