A veteran personal injury attorney, Alex Murdaugh, 54, was heir to a legal dynasty that has held sway over South Carolina's Lowcountry region for more than a century. On 7 June 2021, he reported finding his wife Maggie, 52, and son Paul, 22, dead near the dog kennels on the family's sprawling estate.
No arrests were made for more than a year, but Murdaugh was indicted last July on two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon while committing a violent crime.
He insisted he was not involved in the deaths, but state prosecutors argued he shot the pair at close range with a rifle and shotgun.
After less than three hours, a jury found him guilty on all charges.
He now faces 30 years to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors chose not to seek the death penalty.
The convicted murderer is separately facing a wave of financial charges, including allegations he embezzled millions from the family-founded law firm at which he was a partner.
Prosecutors said in court that he murdered his wife and son to distract from his misdeeds and gain sympathy.
They called more than 60 witnesses over four weeks in an effort to poke holes in Murdaugh's alibi and expose numerous inconsistencies in his version of events.
Investigators never found a murder weapon, but the prosecution built its case using circumstantial evidence including mobile phone data and gunshot residue.
Perhaps the most significant piece of evidence was a video taken by Paul at the dog kennels minutes before he died, in which Murdaugh can be heard in the background. For 20 months after the murders, Murdaugh insisted he had not been at the kennels that night, before admitting at trial he had lied.
Over two days on the witness stand last week, Murdaugh testified in his own defence - a high-risk move for any defendant.
He acknowledged for the first time he was at the dog kennels that night shortly before his wife and son were killed.
He conceded he had lied several times to investigators, citing a long-standing addiction to prescription pain-killers that made him "paranoid".
And he admitted to years of theft from clients and people he "loved and cared about" so that he could fund his abuse of opiates.
But, he said, none of it meant he was guilty. Tearfully referring to the victims as "Mags" and "Paw Paw", he said: "I would never intentionally do anything to hurt either one of them."
The testimony was Murdaugh's "Hail Mary", Mrs Williams told BBC News. She said that, as a former prosecutor, he knew juries like to hear from a defendant and knew he had to explain why he said he lied.
In 2018, the family's long-time housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, died after an apparent accident at their home. Murdaugh encouraged her adult children to file a wrongful death lawsuit. Murdaugh's insurance company paid out to the tune of $4.3m, but the Satterfields did not receive a dime. Murdaugh later admitted he had kept it all.
Police are now re-examining how Ms Satterfield died. The Murdaugh family claim she tripped over their dogs and fell down the stairs.
The year after, Paul drunkenly crashed a boat in an accident that killed one of his passengers, Mallory Beach. He had been charged and was out on bail at the time of his death. Murdaugh implied on the stand that he had faced death threats since the incident.
Three months after his wife and son died, in September 2021, Murdaugh was injured in a roadside shooting. Authorities later revealed he had staged a botched hit job on himself with the aid of a distant cousin, so that Buster could collect a life insurance policy.

A nasty lot, entitled children allowed to do whatever they liked, looking down on the ordinary working people around them. Only one I have any sympathy for is the Mother although her bad parenting was a factor in Paul's issues. Their attitude was to cover up any wrong doing whatever way they could to save their name. Alex is totally guilty but probably was high at the time.... he basically was just a high brow junkie. That buster lad is too sweet to be wholesome too. Definitely not the end of the story here.

Thank you for doing such a great video on this. I watched it all from the beginning to the end and I think I even listened to every Medium and Tarot reader on this case that was put out. This family will continue to be in the news for such a long time. The media is what makes these cases such high profile due to being covered by everyone. There probably won't be anyone who can't say they don't know about his trial and the Murdaugh's. You did them great justice and show of respect.

This house sold for 2.6 million or 2.9 million not sure but it went for a lot less than asked. there was an auction and they sold items that were in the house, couches and armchair one for $30,000. It’s made of leather for example. Such a heartless and mindless acts of betrayal!

Good coverage Scott, feel very sorry for Buster and his loss because he's actually lost both parents and his brother too. That poor kid is now also being besmerched by the media over the death of Steven Smith, I do not watch things like Fox News only my local news here in Australia. However I love watching stuff on TH-cam that peeks my interest like your channel and Faces of the Forgotten. BTW I love your hair.xo

Your presence in these films is genuinely felt as you are genuine yourself in your care for what you present. Great content here. Always respectful.....This upload is awesome as always. And - as always - I always look forward to when you post. Until the next one - take care, my friend....and be safe. PS - the hair hasn't looked better in a long while.

A lot of people are drawn to the tragedies of Alex Murdaugh and his wife and youngest son. They are said to have raised their 2 boys to know they were better than any. Others because in this part of the low country in S.C., the name Murdaugh over the past century has meant power, influence and wealth.
Maggie had stated that she had difficulty attaching to her youngest son at his birth and beyond. Any nurturing Maggie had as a mother was said to have gone to her first child, Buster. It is easy to see the lack of attachment to Paul and how very different he was from his o,der brother.
The parents also were lacking in providing their boys consequences when they were guilty of reckless bad behavior. This is certainly seen in there encouraging their boys to party and drink alcohol with them. The parents provided the booze, maybe drugs and the boys brought their friends into the mix and became a drinking excessively and no consequences.
Paul not only became belligerent when he was drunk but also he displayed physical oddities in his extremities. He also became an abuser physically and mentally to his girlfriend. All those on the boat the late evening/early morning, saw Paul abusing his girlfriend as well as derogatory comments to the other 2 girls and within limits to the 2 guys. Youth, lack of fully developed prefrontal cortex, kept them on the boat when Paul sowed them it was his boat driving recklessly when the others discussed first getting a ride by Uber or friends and being held captive to his evil personality.
I have wondered what different the others could have done that the night wouldn’t end in tragedy.
-Not get back on boat at last stop
-restraining Paul physically and returning to the dock
-pulling the keys out of the ignition and maybe even throwing them into the darkened waters so the boat would be incapacitated and so would Paul.
In reading about the Alex Murdaugh family of wife and 2 boys, it is hard to understand that they never truly parented their boys and allowed them to destroy others lives,, properties in such preventable ways by teaching right from wrong and having consequences for bad behavior and not being supervised by parents who understood parenting responsibly.
All the guns, rifles, long gun not locked up but available to use at their whim, it is surprising no one was shot and killed when adding booze, guns, ammunition and no rules.
They talk about Paul as being the best friend, nephew, son when eulogizing him. All that shows is the basic foundation of being a good human who cares for others was there but not rewarded.
I thought about the sign of behavior in a young kid becoming psychotic. Did he torture animals and small kids. Then I realized he shot at will hogs, birds, rodents and was given a large property filled with things needing killing.
I think the main difference between Buster and Paul was Buster had a mother who lived him and treasured spending time. Alex, if what he says about a 20 plus year opiate addiction then they didn’t have a father who was grounded in reality and truthfulness.
What a mess these parents made when they decided to conceive and chose to only partially raise a good son….all allegedly .
Everything is my opinion only and for things not charged with or action taken, they are all edged.

    Scott,
Each time you mention “Buster” Murdaugh, (7:24 & 9:19) you show photos of Paul Murdaugh (victim and brother of Buster)
Otherwise great video, as usual Scott. I was hesitant to say anything, didn’t want to seem rude or overly critical, yet I know after watching your videos, you strive to be as concise as possible and thought I should mention.
Also, the jury was out at the Mozelle property to view the scene at the tail end of Alex Murdaugh’s recent trial. I believe it was the day before the end of the 6 week long trial. I watched a good portion of the trial on Emily D Baker’s channel.
Rest in Peace Maggie, Paul, Mallory, Ms Satterfield, & Steven.

Thank you for your thoughtful coverage of this awful situation. I think it’s terrible that Maggie and Paul do not have a headstone yet after two years. There’s plenty of money in that family even if it came from the Uncles or Grandmother. Moselle is huge and it was just auctioned off furnishings as well this past weekend. They paid off AM’s legal fees or some settlements, and were still able to give Buster $500K perhaps he will order the headstone, although none of them seem to be all that warm and fuzzy at least to me personally.
May those connected to this devastation find rest and peace 🕊️Gloria Satterfield (Sp?), Mallory Beach, Stephen Smith and Margaret and Paul Murdaugh.
