Speed King was the peddle Ian Paice used on his drum kit. And that was the inspiration for this song. Crazy. When my brother played drums, he'd practice with Purple on the stereo, learning the fills Paice would use and use them in his playing with his band. Peace.

I totally agree. Deep Purple were much riskier, progressive, more aggressive and more interesting than Led Zeppelin, and they was also the best musicians, and Speed King is simply the best statement in this regard. The live versions of this song are even better and more epic with a soft part in the middle.
Around 1970, Deep Purple and Mott the Hoople were (to me) the most exciting bands, with Led Zeppelin next. Mott the Hoople's Brain Capers is almost as heavy as Deep Purple in Rock, and was a step towards punk. Thanks, thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to this fab song! 🙂

This is Deep Purple the classic line-up. Explore all their songs from the early 70's and you will find how R&B changed into heavy rock. They were great and to me better than Led Zep mainly because of Jon Lord. But I do like all three; Deep Purple, Led Zep and Black Sabbath. Back then even though they were considered heavy rock they knew how to mix things up and move between genres.
Flight of the Rat form this album is a must but all of the tracks are ... including the full version of Black Night ...oddly enough Black Night was included on the Mexican release as the opener followed by Speed King
