As someone with Italian heritage I am offended by pretentious gall that some African Americans consider their heritage so much more important than mine, that they have to tear down Columbus's statue and plant one of theirs directly on top of it. I've read the Columbus logs and the account of his deeds in full I understand his shortcomings- your heroes definitely had them too..... but that's no reason to be this childish. Go build your own statue and quit tearing down and stomping on the work of other artists!

Took a little time to research Tubman...actually, that little bit of work has deflated the image I had in my memory created by media and education institutions. She was one person of many involved in ferreting slaves. Truthfully, her efforts weren't all that unique, terrific or daring as portrayed now. Some aspects of her life and heroics were based on hearsay, as there is no historic documentation. Even the claimed number of people trafficked dropped over time. Honestly don't think I can believe much of her early life story either - likely embellished to explain her maladies and for myth building purposes.

This is excellent! Tubman was a remarkable person. She deserves to be publicly honored and recognized in this way for her positive contributions in social activism and freeing over 70 enslaved Black ppl. That took extreme courage, intelligence, and true grit!

There have been all kinds of cultural tributes to "Native Americans" who were, after all, ALSO IMMIGRANTS. Kennewick Man proved that the "Indians" were also slaughtering each other LOOOONG before the "reviled and hated" Christopher Columbus arrived. Kennewick had an old arrowhead imbedded in his hip bone I believe from one of the illustrious "First Nations" people's bow. Columbus crossed the Atlantic ocean in a tiny flotilla of little more than what we would consider motor-less pleasure craft today and returned, in the 15th Century for Christ's sake!! something no "Native American ever accomplished. For all his faults, Columbus had brass balls the size of Newark.
Eh.. in the 1400s, you couldn't pay me not to want to get on a ship and leave spain.. js.. but those people knew technology, they lived how they wanted to... they could have had pyramids and stuff.. they chose to live hunter gatherer spiritual lives.. and yeah they were fighting each other long before we arrived.. but that's just the thing.. we arrived.. they were already here.. that distinction matters.. im not a apologist but they planted their flag long before we did... that means their say matters as much as ours if not a little more.. they been here longer.. think about it.. what if russia come in and 'colonized' us.. would we be happy... and then after the fact.. would we also want a say..? i know i would.. even though we know we wouldn't get one.

@@jonammons5882 That was the Moon landing of the 15th Century, but I don't think you can comprehend that. The voyages were the near bankruptcy of the Spanish Crown. I'm no fan of capitalism, but Columbus was under the pressure of debt. And, by the way, so was Thomas Jefferson. But while I have your ear, can you imagine the surprise on the faces of the first Portuguese sailors when they arrived on the Ivory Coast to find all the institutions of slavery ALREADY in place?! Slavery was a GLOBAL institution in the 15th Century. To tear down Columbus' statues for satisfying todays' sensibilities is astonishingly stupid. I hope you don't also think Cleopatra was black...
