oh my god after trying probably 30 different fix's I finally found the one that works. went from game download dropping to 0mb/s and not going over 10mb/s, too averaging 80 mb/s and peaking at 100. thank you so much
I have been having issues with Steam downloads for legit a year now and this helped so much. I was getting sick and tired of steam constantly dropping my download speeds and spiking and dropping the speeds. Thank you so much.
Thank you so damn much. After a whole year and a half, I never understood why my laptop would have such issues downloading games on Steam unlike other platforms. Never have I ever found other things than articles telling you to clear cache or change download region and all. This is finally a clear answer and fix to it. Again, I really appreciate.
This is super useful for me. I have a NVME drive for most of my Steam games but my current internet in my dorm is insane at nearly 600 MB/s a second on Steam. This is great for about 20 seconds before the disk runs out of cache and slows to a crawl. Spreading the load between 2 SSD's should hopefully allow me to keep the peak going for longer.
Literally I've had my PC for 4 years now and I could never figure out why the downloads on my computer ran slow despite having 1gb download speed, I'm so happy I found this video! Downloads went from 5-10mb/s to 115mb/s!! :D Thank you so much
TYSM i was struggling with downloading games on my hdd as the disk usage would bottleneck my download speed to 500kb/s even tho i have 1 gig internet. putting the downloading files on my nvme ssd finally let me enjoy my network to the fullest. Thank you!
Yoooo you are a legend man! I knew my steam downloads were going too slow and then realized it was only slow on my HDD. This is a game changer man you are a legend
Wait so do you need double the space on the SSD to download a game? For example I have 100 gigs free on my SSD but Sea of Thieves takes 80 gigs to download but my SSD is running out of space before the download is finished.
OMG! this work wonderful this cut down the time of my downloads 😮 at first the download speed drops to zero for minutes and then continue downloading and then keeps reaping this process for ever this take hours! Thanks a lot! 👍
This works!!! I had constant drops to 0 mbps. It sometimes would peak to 350mbps but that only lasted a few seconds as it dropped over and over to 0mbps. Tried this method, but I only did the “downloaded” folder and not the other “depotcache” folder. Instantly a huge improvement! Download speeds are consistent and never dropped to 0. Once the game(s) downloaded, it automatically cleared out the downloaded folder.
I have to say, this is the best fix for slow/0 download speed steam errors. Before my speed was fluctuating between 0 and something incredibly slow, but with this method it consistently stays around 42 MB/second. I highly recommend.
OMG bro, i literally had this problem of slown downloads on steam for months and really had lost any hope to solve, but with the symlink you showed up i can finally download games properly, oh shit you just saved my ass, thanks!!!
I never subscribe or like videos but I have to here, you helped me so much and looking at the comments, you helped loads of other people too. Thank you!
Work's great! I tried another solution trying ot do the same thing using a CMD command off of some site but it didn't work, but this did and its a bit simpler to use. thanks!
Dude, thank you for this guide. I'm 3 days searched on Ru TH-cam, but didn't find anything. Your method helped me, because my hdd was very slow when downloading a game
For the longest time, I have tried everything, since nvme is expensive, bought ssd and large hdd but still doesnt go as fast as nvme, bought a few games as winter sale is on steam, have the fastest internet plan but stayed at max 27/mbps then going 0 at times, but this fixed it! Downloading at 550mbps now! Currently tested and downloaded @ 23/12/2023. Cheers, mate!
Thank you so much! This has helped me download games on my HDD! I've had gigabit internet, and seeing my drives get about 107 MB/s+ consistent is so nice!
At first I thought I did this and nothing happened because my downloads were still the same. Then I realized I had Origin opened in the background and it was updating a game so I closed it. My Disk write/read went from like 8MB/s to 112MB/s so incredible!
I just want to say even using a HDD for the storage space of the downloads is WAY FASTER. Was doing 2.5MB/s and now am doing 29 MB/s w/ the install going onto my SSD. I wish I could thank you with money but broke 4+ year old laptop gamer here. THANK YOU!
I'm downloading 80GB game with 18 MB/ s internet speed but my Disk usage is only 14-19 MB/s speed My drive has 130GB space free Why is my disk usage less speed..can you please reply?
I can't understand why in Epic Games, downloading a game to the HDD uses all my internet bandwidth, but in Steam on the same HDD it remains at 0 bytes. what's going on with steam and hdd?
Okay it still works in 2024 and this really helps a lot, my portable hard drive runs like ranging from 0KB - 500KB disk usage which pisses me off.. But this symlinking method really saves a lot of time tysm!
Thank you so much! I store mostly all of my games on my HDD and the downloads would drop from 10mbps down to 0 so much and I couldn't figure out why for the longest time, now it's at a constant 30+
i knew about link shell extension for changing steam folders to external drives but i didnt know about how it could be used to update games faster. I'm trying it out with apex legends because if i didnt the update would literally take about an hour to finish patching after downloading the update. It definitely did update faster, like 3 times as fast. Just keep in mind you need enough space for the download on the ssd
can u tell me what u mean by " having enough space for the download on the ssd " cuz i have a 250g nvme and 2tb hdd and it takes so long to patch the updates on the hd and the ssd is aways almost full like 20g left or even less, so i want to do this tutorial but im not sure if i need the whole storage of the update on the ssd available or i just need like 5g or less
@@Lbebe For example, when there is a new apex legends season the update will be like 60gb, you need to have more than 60gb free on the ssd for this method to work otherwise you'll get an error saying not enough disk space (on sdd). Because Its downloading the update to your ssd then copying faster to your hard drive than doing everything on your hard drive. Its a bit tricky to explain but I hope it makes some sense.
FINALLY I FOUND THIS VIDEO AGAIN AFTER A YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! everyone has stupit answers like patching takes time just wait. after the update patching takes a while again now i can redo this trick!!!!
I have this issue on my ssd. Only have one harddrive so don' really know what to do, any tips? it's driving me crazy that a 100mb update takes 4 hours cause the writing is 64gb and is taking forever. ssd is not that old, only about 1 year, sp don't know what to do, pls help a frustrated gamer xD
I was able to get JUST ENOUGH space on my SSD to download the game. My internal has such a small amount of workable space, that's the whole reason I needed to get my external drive. Still don't notice a massive boost like everyone else, but it is keeping a steady 130mbps. Although I pay for 500, so it's still ridiculously slow compared to what I should be getting.
What if your having the same problem but theyre both both the same drive already , ive an m.2 ultra ssd and it goes at 9.1-9.3 megabites for the majority of the download and then gets to a point and starts slowing down to zero, same issue but all on 1 very fast ssd i cant make heads or tails of why?
Can you make a video showing how to use the hard drive as a cache for downloading steam games similar to what linus tech tips did for his server pc? I wanna use my hdd as a cache for downloaded games
I think I did everything right since the files go to my nvme drive but the disk usage rates are still the same and it shows as if it is using only the ssd instead of using both ssd and hdd
I have a problem!. When i start the download it downloads to my ssd (in the steam downloading file) and then moves the files to my HDD, this makes the download as slow as it was form the start. Did i do something wrong?
So if I am dowloading a 10gb game from steam and have the cache folder on my SSD but is symlinked to my HDD. I would still need a free space of 10 gb on my SSD even though it is already symlinked to my HDD ?
This is late, but yes you would still need sufficient space on ur SSD because whenever you update/download a game on steam it reserves a space, so if your doing this method make sure you have enough drive space so steam can reserve the space needed for the update/download. Once the update/download is done, ur SSD should clear up if you set your download path onto the HDD
okay I need some help because something is till wack. so this worked for increasing my disc usage but above were it says current when downloading a game in steam its still only going at 1 mb. is that because of my internet or something else?
When I try to drop the picked link source into the hard drive, it says "Link Shell Extension (1) Incorrect Function" I am doing everything the same as in the video however the "steam depotcache" and "steam downloading" files are in my SSD and I am trying to drop them in the hard drive.
oh my god after trying probably 30 different fix's I finally found the one that works. went from game download dropping to 0mb/s and not going over 10mb/s, too averaging 80 mb/s and peaking at 100. thank you so much
I have been having issues with Steam downloads for legit a year now and this helped so much. I was getting sick and tired of steam constantly dropping my download speeds and spiking and dropping the speeds. Thank you so much.
Limit your download speeds to like 10 mb per second is your best bet
Thank you so damn much. After a whole year and a half, I never understood why my laptop would have such issues downloading games on Steam unlike other platforms. Never have I ever found other things than articles telling you to clear cache or change download region and all. This is finally a clear answer and fix to it. Again, I really appreciate.
what if you only have one ssd on ur pc…
@@LANNUNLESS Well, this only happens to fix where hdd is slow on an ssd it will probably be okay
Wow I’ve been struggling to fix this horribly slow download for months and you finally helped fix it. Thank you!!!!
Literally I've had my PC for 4 years now and I could never figure out why the downloads on my computer ran slow despite having 1gb download speed, I'm so happy I found this video! Downloads went from 5-10mb/s to 115mb/s!! :D Thank you so much

This has to be one of the first youtube tutorials that has actually fixed my problem! thank you so much!
I have had this problem for more than a year and this video finally helped me to solve it, I went from 6mbps to 90mbps. very useful!
OMG! this work wonderful this cut down the time of my downloads 😮 at first the download speed drops to zero for minutes and then continue downloading and then keeps reaping this process for ever this take hours! Thanks a lot! 👍
As expeced , much better download speeds thank you man.
The man that speed up steam downloads showing real method insted of guiding how to change download server
I dont normally leave comments for youtube videos, but honestly, thank you for this information! It worked amazingly
This is absolutely genius. I decided to find out how it works and learned what hard and soft links are. So cool, thanks!
Download speeds are consistent and never dropped to 0. that awkward moment when the EA App has figured out how to let the user switch their download cache with ease, but steam doesn't.
What a life saver, thankyou so much the constant stopping and starting of downloads was killing me
I have to say, this is the best fix for slow/0 download speed steam errors. Before my speed was fluctuating between 0 and something incredibly slow, but with this method it consistently stays around 42 MB/second. I highly recommend.
tried multiple different things and this is the only fix that worked, THANK YOU!!!
Here in 2024 ABSOLUTE LIFESAVER!!! Thank you so much! I have been trying to find a fix for this for months!
BRO THIS ACTUALLY WORKED TYYY it still goes down then and there but way better. TYSM
OMG bro, i literally had this problem of slown downloads on steam for months and really had lost any hope to solve, but with the symlink you showed up i can finally download games properly, oh shit you just saved my ass, thanks!!!
This guy is an absolute g, my download speed was 0😢 and now it’s stable 500😮 for my hhd, everyone give this dude a like rn
I've been having trouble with steam downloads for quite a while and now everything is fixed with the help of this video
I'm so impressed with his download speed. Wow! Meanwhile me downloading games overnight. Sometimes it took few days.
1 year later and you still saved my ass!! THANKS
Love the Hadidas in the background. Great videos and very inspiring for a tech enthusiast like myself!
I never subscribe or like videos but I have to here, you helped me so much and looking at the comments, you helped loads of other people too. Thank you!
Work's great! I tried another solution trying ot do the same thing using a CMD command off of some site but it didn't work, but this did and its a bit simpler to use. thanks!
you just helped me make my updates go from 3 mb/s max on hdd to 80mb/s. thank you
Dude, thank you for this guide. I'm 3 days searched on Ru TH-cam, but didn't find anything. Your method helped me, because my hdd was very slow when downloading a game
Bro thanks you made my downloads go from 120 minutes to 2 hours thanks.
lmaoo
I was looking for this for so long.
Thanks!
Oh my, this worked
Thanks a lot man, I was desperate for fixing this, Steam is the only launcher that does this and I don't know why
Damn Thank You So much This totally works I been struggling with these bs for 4 years since i moved to pc gaming
For the longest time, I have tried everything, since nvme is expensive, bought ssd and large hdd but still doesnt go as fast as nvme, bought a few games as winter sale is on steam, have the fastest internet plan but stayed at max 27/mbps then going 0 at times, but this fixed it! Can confirm, still works in 2023. Absolutely awesome solution, for me.
Great Job Man. It worked finally!
Thank you for the video, you solved my problem that I had for months :)
At first I thought I did this and nothing happened because my downloads were still the same. Then I realized I had Origin opened in the background and it was updating a game so I closed it. My Disk write/read went from like 8MB/s to 112MB/s so incredible!
thanks so much i have research this problem for a while this is the only thing that worked youre the best :)
Thank you sooooooo much, my optical fiber connection is finally used at its full potential
I just want to say even using a HDD for the storage space of the downloads is WAY FASTER. Was doing 2.5MB/s and now am doing 29 MB/s w/ the install going onto my SSD. I wish I could thank you with money but broke 4+ year old laptop gamer here. THANK YOU!

Couldn't say. Putting the downloads on my HDD and installs on my SSD saved my gaming though by following the directions in the video.
I can't understand why in Epic Games, downloading a game to the HDD uses all my internet bandwidth, but in Steam on the same HDD it remains at 0 bytes. what's going on with steam and hdd?

Just saved my life! Thanks mate!
omg tysm i was trying to reinstall r6, this dropped the dl time from like 6 hours to 20 minutes
Works hella great, you're amazing.
Wow it actually works , thank you very much.
That did it! Thank you great wizard!
Thank you soo much mate, this was the fix i needed.
Thanks for solving my problem this video was a game changer.
Oh my god you're a lifesaver thank you so so muucchhh! My downloads now are way faster.
how did u find the depotchache folder? mine is missing.
@Enderking394 maybe try reinstalling steam? Cause mine was in the steam folder between the folder "controller_base" and "dumps"
I can't believe this. Thank you so much. Its saved me
Bloody brilliant - thank you
i have been already using it for purposes but i never thought of this great job!!! btw it can be done with cmd -> mklink /j
Huh.... Very interesting trick!
Thanks for the trick!
I didn't even notice that we are using the same icon-pack 😄

I don't see a "steamdepotcache" folder on my HDD, however there is one on my SDD. Should I just skip that step?
Can I use RAM as a cache? I don't want to ruin my ssd with needless writes
Bro you saved my life
Thank you so much It Worked
Thanks man!
I have this issue on my ssd. Only have one harddrive so don' really know what to do, any tips? it's driving me crazy that a 100mb update takes 4 hours cause the writing is 64gb and is taking forever. ssd is not that old, only about 1 year, sp don't know what to do, pls help a frustrated gamer xD
i thank you for this
how did u find the depotchache folder? mine is missing.
I'm gonna try this and if it works, im giving you a subscribe!
Not only did this not help, because my main SSD does not have enough space, now I have to restart my download. Really upset now!

bro thank you so much
Dayum ✅🙏🔥🔥🔥🔥

How did you managed to get your Task Manager on Black?
Windows 11

went from waiting 25 to 3 minutes, neat
does this put excessive stress or basically is this what SSD/HDDs do all the time? Its just moving data around correct?
Like and sub, ur the best dude, i was looking for a solution to this problem for a long time and u solved it, thank you a lot
okay I need some help because something is till wack. so this worked for increasing my disc usage but above were it says current when downloading a game in steam its still only going at 1 mb. is that because of my internet or something else?
SOMEONE GIVE THIS MAN A MEDAL
this is powerful for poor people who does not have m.2 or ssd or have a small size of ssd
I don’t understand this it’s not letting me download anything saying and error occurred while installing (whatever game) (missing file privileges)
When I try to drop the picked link source into the hard drive, it says "Link Shell Extension (1) Incorrect Function" I am doing everything the same as in the video however the "steam depotcache" and "steam downloading" files are in my SSD and I am trying to drop them in the hard drive.
unfortunately this dues not work for the installing part of the game steam glitches out hard when this method is used :(
