Should your next #Mac be an #iMac or #MacBook? Over 90% of Macs sold are laptops, and it’s easy to see why - MacBooks are light while offering best-in-class performance and battery life. But there are some compelling reasons to stick to the iMac, Mac mini or Mac Studio as well. You save money and you have a more reliable machine.

I love my MBP 14”. When at mother ship it’s hooked to a pair of displays and lives in clam shell as a desktop, when I go to work it becomes my laptop. Best of both worlds.

I’m still debating getting the new MBA with 16 gig ram and 512 gig SSD and waiting for the new iPad Pro. I am a hobby photographer that does very minor photo editing, along with the basics like email, web browsing and streaming subscription services. Right now I’m just using my first gen iPad Pro with 256 gig with about 20 gig storage left. I finally retired my mid 12 MBP last year since the 2nd replacement battery finally let go.

For many years I had a desktop Mac and a MacBook Pro. This worked very well for me. iCloud Drive made it super convenient. Since I store everything in iCloud Drive, it didn't matter what computer I was using. You're absolutely right about the effect of keeping the computer connected to the charger all the time. Now that I use only a MacBook Pro, I do use it on battery a lot. I have two really great LG 4K displays connected to a Thunderbolt dock. During the work week, my work MacBook Pro is connected to everything. I use my personal MacBook Pro on battery all week long. The battery gets its "exercise". I have always used my MacBook Pros on battery as much as possible. When I used to work for a managed IT service company I would go a full day with my MacBook Pro without connecting to power. The later Intel MacBook Pros had great battery life. I could use my 2019 15-inch MacBook Pro for around 6-7 hours without connecting to power. My M2 Max MacBook Pro can last a full 24-hour day.

with apple silicon and every mac having the same chipset, having a dedicated desktop doesn’t really makes any sense anymore unless you’re a heavy, heavy users that need that M Ultra chip. back then, intel chips in macbooks were really underpowered and ran very hot hence the need for a dedicated desktop that had better thermals and better performance. now you can just get a macbook and dock it with a good external monitor. as for battery, macos has a setting where when you don’t use your battery much, it’ll actually let it drain while plugged in and then starts allowing power once it gets low enough. with this, you don’t really have to worry about cycling your battery.

@@baoboba Need wasn't really the point. In 2017 I wanted a 5K iMac. I wanted it mainly for the awesome 5K display. After I gave that iMac to a friend last year I started using two LG Ultrafine 4K displays with my MacBook Pro. I have more screen real estate now than before. My M2 Max MacBook Pro is a lot more powerful than the iMac was. There are a lot of things that I don't need but it was really nice to have.

What about using a MacBook as a Mac mini? If I’m not mistaken, if you have a monitor you can connect the MacBook to it and use it like a desktop.

that's my thought right now, I'm a developer on an M1 Mac Mini, currently have an M2 MBP but thinking about trading it in for an M4 MBP later this year and switching to laptop and plug into my monitor when I'm home

Dear Mr Griffin Jones. Forgive me for having a sense of humour. I hope you have one too. It will protect you from shallow-minded, humourless people. Niceness is probably important but one can take it a wee bit too far. Have a wacky and buffoonish day. And thanks for the video - thoughtful, hirsute, and not hilarious, as ever.
