Evel was playing golf at Silver Dollar Golf club in Odessa Florida where I worked and met him in the parking lot after his round. Kept my 1988 Yamaha Banshee there in an enclosed trailer. Pulled the seat off and washed it clean. Borrowed a magic marker from the clubhouse. He signed that seat " To David Happy Landings. Evel Knievel. Still have the Banshee. All stock. Has not been ridden in almost 20 years. I should sell it. 62 years old now and my health is failing.
The actual story.... Apparently.... Was that keneval was sharing a cell with someone called knoffel. In the morning when the sheriff came to take them to court he cracked "well look here! We've got Awful Knoffel and evil keneval" Being a religious man he changed the spelling to evel.

Pretty sure that's just for the audience. Most of these collectors are probably well informed but they go over some cool facts for the show instead of just having the text cards at the bottom. You're right about him being good at pretending to be surprised though.

They can work in the back though or hold management positions. But most them have other projects or businesses as well as filming Pawn Stars.
