I'm glad you played the Soulo against some of the others. I still like the Soulo harmon tone the best. AND the intonation of it too! Thanks for the video, Trent!

Thank you for the mention of the Charley Davis mute that you didn't demo, but mentioned you use it yourself. While I love the Joral bubble harmons, I purchased a new Carol Brass 6280L-PSM(D) in January and it has a very narrow bell throat. The Joral models just barely catch enough to stay in the bell. Any kind of jostle and they'll fall out. Likewise a Tom Crown, which you did preview. Other models when viewing their design have the same problem. The throat of the mute is too wide and too short. Found a new model Charley Davis via The Bob Reeves site and ordered one from there (in black finish...very cool), as the pics showed a narrower neck on the mute with foam padding rather than cork. Arrived yesterday. Fits perfectly. Sounds great. May not be the model you use yourself, Trent, but it did the trick for me and solved a very big problem. Thank you!

The Soulo and the Best Brass aluminum sounded the best to me by far. I play a Soulo myself and it has a clean, warm sound but still has that classic Harmon vibe. The Best Brass aluminum sounded amazing, it really has the shape of the mute Miles used in the 50s and 60s and the sound is really close as a result. I see why you dig the Trumcor because it really has great projection but the sound just doesn't have that classic Harmon tone to it IMO.

The Zinger has the best clarity and separation, I love the sound of the Soulo, the Tom Crown alum. has a Miles vibe to it, my favorite all round is Jo Ral Alum. All your vidios are awesome thank you so much for putting up these informative vidios, I picked up an old vintage Harmon mute from Josh in NYC which is cool as hell nothing like the ones made today

I play the Jo Ral copper. I like the sound and ease of playing. (Schilke B3L (1978) and Marcinkiewicz Rick Baptist)
    Favorites from the video:
    1. Best Brass - Brass
    2. Jo Ral - Aluminum
    3. Best Brass - Aluminum

Nicholas Caljean i killed my Jo- ral today... to heavy, hard to play and does not fit my trumpet well... though good sounding but im looking for something that is less heavy and resistent. The Jo-ral brings the whole trumpet out of balance so I don’t really like it

I LOVE the Zinger- I noticed a huge difference between the aluminum and copper one, which I personally prefer the copper one. Agreed though it’s way heavier than the aluminum, almost uncomfortably so, but the sound is worth the extra weight for me. Thanks for the great video, Trent!

    • @tomchojnowski9215

I agree 100% The aluminum Zinger is a little to much the copper takes the edge off to bad he didn't have a copper Zinger to compare.

I find it interesting how the different materials get different colors out of the sound -
Copper - seems to be the loudest of the three
Brass - a nice middle ground
Aluminum - softest of the three
Personally, I have owned copper and aluminum, and I prefer the original aluminum for sound and blending purposes (in a big band section).
I have never tried a Tom Crown, but I was really amazed at it’s buziness and clarity.
I use a Jo Ral aluminum bubble mute and that has that classic Harmon sound I have been looking for.
Thanks for doing this video so we can hear the differences.

Zinger is loud but sounds more like a straight vs harmon. Soulo is good but on the mic in the room the Best Brass aluminum cuts the best to my ears. Tom Crown aluminum at the entry level price is actually really good too, since some of the others are twice as much.

Thanks for the extremely helpful demos, Trent. Personally, I love how you sound on the copper Best Brass hands-down. I love the richness that gives it that Miles-y quality while not sacrificing the nice harmon buzz. I admit to bias because that's what I use most, but this video helped validate this usage for me. I want to add that I also love how my copper Best Brass feels more than any other harmon I've played, so different strokes for different folks. This being said, your demo has convinced me to go get a Soulo harmon because it also sounds great and appears to have an important feature I doubt many have considered: I have to use a clip-on gooseneck mic for my solo harmon work on the Céline tour, but the gooseneck doesn't reach quite far enough into the Best Brass mute for that close mic sound I love,. Unless looks are deceiving, it appears the Soulo's apparent shorter profile would solve that issue. As you said, so many factors go into selecting the right mute!

Interesting video. Thanks for taking the time to demo those mutes. For cutting through a group the zinger would be the ticket. Overall sound for me goes to BB aluminum or jo ral alum. The soulo had a certain characteristic to the sound I didn't care for.

  • @furcifer8218
    @furcifer8218 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The copper horn, as great as it is, makes for an unfortunate bias for most players to overcome here. I love everything about all copper horns except how they play for me and I sound on them, LOL. I've tried Puje and the Calicchio copper solo. Fantastic instruments, and I so wish they were right for me, because they are gorgeous, but they are just not. Meanwhile, most cats are playing some Bach 37 derivative, OR some lightweight bell idea, which makes a HUGE difference with mutes. Horn aside, I am surprised to find that the brass mutes are so much different than the aluminum mutes, which I have all but completely dismissed now. Of the aluminums, I prefer the sound of the Jo-Ral. For me and my horn (which is a brighter and narrower bell taper than a Bach 37), it makes more sense to go for copper mutes, just because it's the most change from bright to dark for the money. But again, coming from a copper horn, it also makes sense that the aluminum mutes are working well there. The next mute I'd probably go for is the Best Brass copper - or maybe the brass, just because I already have the Jo-Ral copper. That brass mute sounded really good for a brighter-than-copper option, with better response/less breakup at the beginning of each note than the aluminums.
Speaking of microphones, there's also a difference when you are working with an instrument mic vs. a vocal mic. (Shure SM57 vs. SM58, etc.) The vocal mics are a little more forgiving on live gigs. Instrument mics are better for getting a clean, even level on a studio track. Most of the time, we don't have a choice on gigs, but it's good to know what you're working with.
***side note - the Best Brass NANO is the coolest little keychain accessory you can have for a harmon. Turns the harmon into a practice mute, or it fits on the end of a mouthpiece for warming up in the car or whatever. I have old harmons I dislike that have been re-purposed with my nano. Fun to tell the other guys in the section that it's your new straight mute, LOL

After 30 years using a Denis Wick Harmon mute I recently went down this rabbit hole of trying different mutes. I got an original Harmon brand one, distributed by Conn Selmer, in a sale. Interestingly it works well on trumpet but on cornetmit feels and sounds very dead. I like it on trumpet though.

Ive watched this about ten times. The aluminium Best brass has more zing than the brass on your copper horn. I heard another guy demo it on a silver trumpet and the brass one was more zingy and for me the best sounding one. This video is too much eye and ear candy.
