“Cristo en el Monte de los Olivos”, op 85, es el único oratorio que compuso Beethoven y comenzó a escribirlo en un momento en el que este género de composiciones estaba en desuso. De hecho, el punto de referencia habían sido los grandes oratorios compuestos por Joseph Haydn.
Conforme a las propias indicaciones de Beethoven, después de un largo período de meditación, el trabajo se compuso rápidamente y se inteRpretó por primera vez el 5 de abril de 1803 en la propia academia de Beethoven- la cual había sido creada en su honor por el Príncipe Lichnowsky- junto con el tercer concierto para piano en C menor y la segunda sinfonía en D mayor. Al año siguiente, Beethoven tomó el oratorio para volver a modelarlo y no se publicaría una segunda versión del mismo hasta 1811.
El libretto fue construido en dos partes, basadas en los pasajes evangélicos que narran las escenas de la Oración en el Huerto y el arresto por parte de las autoriades político-religiosas de Jerusalén. Francisco Javier Huber, que era el libretista de óperas más famoso de Viena, omitió el narrador en un intento de reducir el número de detalles de la acción y, además, para enfocar la totalidad de la acción en Cristo. Así, el carácter de Jesús se caracteriza por su fuerte personalidad. Las emociones y padecimientos de Cristo se subrayan y se colocan en el centro de la acción.
El discurso apenas cambia de la realidad física de la hora de la muerte de Jesús,- cuando se encuentra totalmente sólo y ruega al Padre que le otorgue clemencia- a las indicaciones objetivas dadas por el ángel, principalmente el prospecto de la resurrección para los justos obtenida a través de la muerte de Cristo y la visión de la vida eterna, cantada de forma exultante por el coro de ángeles.
La aceptación, por parte de Jesús, de su destino de sufrimiento para la salvación de la humanidad está recogida en la primera parte del oratorio. Le sigue con una escena teatral, semejante a una ópera, que comienza con la llegada de la soldadesca que busca a Jesús. La escena se completa con la resistencia ofrecida por Pedro y finaliza con el coro de ángeles que canta dando gracias a Dios.

This is the most wonderful performance I have ever heard of this work. I am recovering from COVID and it lifted my spirits so much. I am in tears over this great performance, work, and composer. No cabe duda que cada pieza musical tiene un tiempo y ritmo propio, justo para que se escuche perfecto. Este director dio con ese paso perfecto de la pieza para conmover y llegar directo al corazón.
One of the best renditions of this I have heard in a while. Very surprised it is not performed more often. Way back when I was in high school and college in NYC, was part of a chorus made up of all the schools in the archdiocese of NY. The final chorus was our signature piece, performed every time. Miss it.
FINALLY a performance that captures the spirit of the piece and the composer! So many emote only a fraction of what this does. Bravi to all involved.

This one is my all-time -beethoven favourite.. I don't know why it is so neglected & underrrated. I am not a religious person, but the story is beautiful, the melodies and choirs are breath-taking, so emotional a piece !!! if you bother to learn what they are singing about .. such a powerful piece of music

Daniel Santos, back in the 1970's the "Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo" and the "Coral Acasp" under the conduction of maestro Eleazar de Carvalho, presented this piece "in Portuguese". Unfortunately, there is no recordings from that presentation. It was beautiful.

Amazing as it was composed and sung yesterday. reaching the hearts and souls of so many around the world. I am in South Africa and I listen to this performance almost every day. I am not a musician but the singing really touches my heart and soul. Wonderfull performance, absolutely outstanding. Truly magnificent. I wish I could have met all these wonderful singers

Exelente el pasaje que escoge Beethoven de la pasión de Cristo, el momento mas humano del mesías, en el que su temor, miedo verdadero a su inminente muerte, angustia que encarna que hasta del sudor le brotaba sangre. Si no hubiese temido ni experimentado tal dolor no hubiera tenido verdadero sentido su sacrificio, es donde se plasma el valor de lo que hiso por toda la humanidad. Sea cierto esto o no, como parte fundamental del relato es una parte medular. 😇

This is absolutely the best performance of Christus I have ever heard, apart from the old Herman Scherchen recording.
One of the most overlooked works by Beethoven, yet, perhaps one of the most meaningful. A glorious performance. Listening to the whole oratorio makes singing and listening to the version we are accustomed to of the last chorus (Hallelujah, from Christ on the Mount of Olives sung in English) all the more meaningful. In fact, I always wondered why the piece seemed to start kind of abruptly - now I know that it was connected seamlessly to the last aria sung by Jesus. Thanks for putting this on TH-cam and making my Easter Season!
Yep, he wrote immediately proceeding his heiligenstadt testament which says it all. I'm presently working on a complete english translation, about 1/5th completed with the arrangement.

De twijfel kwam voort uit het feit dat men in die tijd dacht dat het oratorium met de twee meesterwerken van Haydn ('Die Schöpfung' en 'Die Jahreszeiten') zijn hoogtepunt bereikt had. Beethoven maakte vele schetsen voor evenzovele projecten die op niets uitliepen, totdat hij een libretto van Xaver Huber onder ogen kreeg. Zijn oratorium ging in première aan het Theater an der Wien in 1803, samen met zijn Derde pianoconcert en zijn Tweede symfonie. Een tweede versie werd in 1811 door hem gepubliceerd.

Informação sobre a obra ... "O oratório “Christus am Ölberge” (em português, “Cristo no Monte das Oliveiras”), op. 85, de Beethoven (1770-1827) resgata o episódio do Jardim das Oliveiras". "O oratório está marcado para soprano, tenor, baixo, coro e orquestra. O tenor representa Jesus, o soprano um serafim (anjo) e o baixo Pedro, o apóstulo. A obra começa de forma dramática com a agonia de Jesus que canta um recitativo e ária cujo texto diz “Toda a minha alma dentro de mim estremece”. Prossegue com o canto do serafim que afirma a bondade divina e a salvação dos justos, a que se segue um coro de júbilo. Após um dueto e breve recitativo, se houve o coro masculino em tempo de marcha, que configura a chegada dos soldados e o tumulto que se segue. No diálogo com Pedro, Jesus o convence a não resistir. No número final, após uma breve introdução orquestral, um coro de anjos canta uma Aleluia, com o qual a peça termina".

Some seriously good vocal performances here, both from the soloists and choir, and the tempi was perfect throughout. Must question the strings, that seemed to lack depth. Perhaps this was the recording or the acoustics, but it didn't seem to affect the woodwind or brass sections who were excellent.
