I love steam locomotives. I'm even happier to see many brought back to life and operating. The best one ever is the Union Pacific Big Boy numbered 4014. I had to promise to never tell anyone, but I wrecked my bike crossing tracks at an industrial yard on W.110th St in Cleveland Ohio. The crew came out and got me off the street, bandaged me up and fixed my bike. A few days later, I stopped by to thank them. They took me for a ride in a New York Central SW9 engine updated from a 900hp diesel to a 1200hp diesel while taking loaded cars out to the main line, and picked up some empties to bring back.

Ecorce diesel locomotives are wonderful but they don't hold a candle to these old steam machines, these things are like rolling artwork I live in Connecticut and down in Essex is where they have the Essex steam train riding Museum and it's a wonderful place to visit when in town.

I got to run an 0-6-0 tank steam engine. Wasn't hard till I got the hang of it. I might pass the test of driving a locomotive like 40 or 93.

You mean it got harder after you got the hang of it?

I assume you have rags and oil in the firebox when you threw that flare in?

I have heard some railfans say that Canadian Pacific 2816 steams up faster that Milwaukee Road 261 because it is an oil burning steamer.

The faster you heat or cool the boiler, the more stress you put on it. The slower the temperature change, the longer the boiler lasts.

4-6 hours realy? I'm suprised over that short steamup time, over here it's 12h or more before we roll them out. Maybe we just take it slower to minimize straining everything. #40 is a great engine.
