I love seeing videos like this about remote and cold regions, especially now that we are melting under the unbearable heat in Brazil. Seeing the natural effect of extreme cold is good, it reduces the feeling of heat.
Thank you for you time & effort in this presentation. An area that is bountiful yet formidable. All that land, water and sky is inconceivable to my European mind in general. Overwhelming!
I'm now 90 and have flown and lived in the Arctic for several years. The Hope Bay region is definitely promising, but when the chap said it will provide much needed jobs for the locals, he seemed to fall short. He said nothing about royalties for the region and I can only hope the government of Nunavut has negotiated such a deal. Otherwise nothing has changed all these years whereby mineral extraction companies take out millions of dollars and throw local people a few jobs. I've been out of the loop for decades so I could be wrong.
I'm pretty sure their ancestors did not use gil nets placed across the whole inlet, that nothing could pass or escape. I believe gil nets are illegal in Canada.
Traditionally, the Inuit would find a narrowing stream of fresh water where the Arctic Char must pass to get into the ocean for six weeks, then return to fresh water for the remaining part of the year. In those narrow streams they built a flume of rocks to force the returning fish into areas where they can spear them. When Char head into salt water they need that six weeks to rejuvenate their bodies before they return to fresh water. That's when they are caught, because the flesh is back to its firmness and their colour a brighter red. It was an annual occurence and the fish would be filleted with skin left on one side and dried on open rocks. The high Arctic has no flying insects except a huge bumble bee. So fish could be dried in the open without concern about flies. In areas of the Arctic where small trees grew and flies dominated, the fish would be smoked.
Nope. Not illegal for licensed commercial fisherman and registered trappers. Gill nets will have different sized netting, depending on the type of fish that's being commercially caught. In this video the Inuk fisherman is using a 2" gill net. If he's caught using a smaller size, he's in trouble.
I could not live where there are no trees or schrubbery - just a few tiny wild flowers in summer - it's so soul destroying ! Anybody growing anything inside with lighting at least ? They could fly in flowering plants in the summer - even 3 months with a few flowers would make a big difference IMO ! Otherwise, I have no idea why you haven't moved south yet !
Most plants wouldn’t be able to survive. It’s the arctic. The arctic is technically a desert because of lack of precipitation. Snow and ice will kill a lot of vegetation. There’s special flowers and plants that do grow in the arctic though. I think the arctic is beautiful especially when the snow covers it 😊

Ur a smart dude
I love Brazil, and I spent a few months there. Now I'm moving to Nunavut soon.
Well, here in Canada when it's really cold we dream about warmer climates. And when it is hot with high humidity, we dream about winter.

Fascinating documentary!
It was interesting how the fisherman processed the fish for cooking.

Paid for by Canadian taxpayers. Those guys simply got the construction contract.

Also I think there's less oxygen.
Maybe they could import some plastic & rubber shrubs, trees and green plants with flowers - they would stand the 9 month winter better?
To each his own. It has its special kind of beauty and lifstyle. Not for the faint hearted.
@@lorenzbroll101 Sounds really American. Silly idea.
