  • My friend Jim and I walked thru Xia He, an old Chinese village in Ningbo, China. This community will be replaced with a highway in the near future. Jim has formed a bond with the community over the months he has been in China on business and frequently walked the village taking pictures with his authentic film camera. We discuss the past, the future and the characters living there, and reflect on the microcosm that exists there.

    In 1975 I was 15 years old I went to Korea with my father in the Army and our family. Korea was recovering from the war , 25 years after the Korean War and it looks very similar to The Village that you visited there. A lot of the smaller aspects of the town that I visited , they had modern buildings too coming up, but a lot of the people lived in houses very similar to that
    So it brought back memories and I can appreciate your enjoyment in seeing the way people live that's different than us in the United States. Enjoy yourselves.

But her joy of having the new walker is very moving. Thank you very much for this great video! As a Chinese lives in rural area in southern China myself, I feel happy and sad at the same time seeing this video, the happy part is that some foreigners record and show the true picture/moments of ordinary Chinese people, their life & thoughts and the development and changes of China in a respect, admirable and friendly manner. The sad part is that we Chinese rarely record these kind of moments ourselves, which will become precious memories and history resources in the future. We focus on modernization, urbanization and industrialization too much,pay less attention to think about protecting culture reservation, therefore more and more culture buildings, customs and life style are disappearing...I wish our central government do something to prevent the situation getting worse, promote our culture, balance the culture reservation and development.

      A random name , lol, a Chinese living in southern China! without being aware of the great numbers of cultural sites being preserved and turning into great tourist attractions now! Be positive and not pretend and look up on the abundance of information available on the Internet or just travel around China! Anyways have a nice day, cheers and be save

    • @oceanbreeze2663
      @oceanbreeze2663 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't have to rely on the government for everything. Nobody is stopping you from bringing a camera, wandering around and taking interesting pictures.

    • @jznn8218
      @jznn8218 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tiangcs8069 Of course what you said about turning cultural sites into tourist sites is true, however most of the tourist sites are in the big cities. A lot of old buildings/architectures in the undeveloped area have been teared down to build high rises, highways, airports, train stations high speed rails, industry parks...I don't know whether I should be happy about that, it's hard to say this kind of changes are negative because development can let us live a better life, but when I travel to different cities, I feel these cities look almost the same -- a world made of steel and cement, the scenery I read from history books & journals, the footage I saw in the documentaries now can only be seen in attraction sites and history dramas, I feel upset and regret. Anyway, maybe I should be positive about current situation and the future, thanks for your suggestion.😅

    • @jznn8218
      @jznn8218 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@oceanbreeze2663 yup you are absolutely right, but here in China, we ordinary people see our government as an elder parent so if we have some desires which can't be done by our own, we tend to ask our government to do for us...😬, as for bringing a camera to record our life, I think not everyone has the time, money & photograph skills to do so, at least, I am not the one 😓

    With the urbanization of many eastern coastal cities including Ningbo, many of the locals have moved to urban areas to live a better life. There instead, have housed the elder people who refuse to move and immigrants from inner provinces who work in the factories. Appreciate it that you have touched an example of these touching and historically remarkable stories.

    The true love and empathy for those people is to make them live a better quality of life, rather than visiting them from people’s own modern life once or twice and took a picture or two, crying for “they are gonna lose their heritage” just to satisfy themselves (I’m no saying the authors). Everyone deserves modern life style.

The picture of the man planting vegetables with the encroachment of a factory behind him, I literally cried, I know the people may benefit from the change, but what is lost cannot be replaced. I Hate Toy Story 4 Your apparent country with “no history” has 55 unesco world heritage sites ranked number 1 in the whole world along with Italy... try doing some research first? There’s a cultural exploration program called national treasure, it’s quite fun and relatively easy to understand for people who don’t major in history related subjects, you can try giving that a go if you are not a documentary/history textbook person...

    Jim observes deep into the village people's ordinary non-fancy life. I don't know why but I find it really touching. Taking someone's photos and printing them out and giving the photo book to them, that's some interesting gesture. 😄
