  • Simpson's Rule is a simple but powerful method for approximating signed area via "quadratic approximations". After a brief review of the "1-4-1" quadratic rule, Simpson's Rule is derived. There is one worked example as well a discussion of creating an ad hoc, "custom fit" Simpson's Rule to an irregular graph. For the derivation of the "1-4-1" rule, see: • The "1-4-1" rule

    Thanks for explaining this rule.
    I tried googling and looking in my Calculus book but in the end I gave up and just found a picture of Homer Simpson and delivered my assignment.

    Thank you, Chris...but must tell you that Simpson's rule had not fallen out because of calculator technology, because of the calculator technology is already using Simpson's rule for n=100 for the integration process.

    • @chrisodden
      @chrisodden  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point. Given the variety of technological options it is no longer as useful to have this trick up your sleeve when you need to estimate the value of a definite integral. But I think it is still worth understanding since a) it gives you some sense of the types of methods used by those technologies, and b) it is a pretty idea!

    Hi there. Thanks for this video explanation. Just wanted to get your permission to copy only the first 6.15 minutes for my class presentation.The rest is too advanced for my audience and it would be better they not even looking at that area. I’m teaching seafaring students.
