I think the death of a meme is when it gets mainstream media coverage or use.. but it also loses a lot of power when people who don't understand the the original reference start using it.. which is why things like "the cake is a lie" died, because people (usually kids) who had never even played Portal started using it.

I actually HAVE sat through both Nyan and Heyayeaye 10 hour videos. I have 2 screens, and I had Kingdom Hearts 2 on a ps2 emulator. I made it through all both videos, and the game, in 1 day. I still enjoy Heyayeaye, and Nyan is tolerable in small doses. ^^

There used to be ten hour versions of Loud Pipes by Ratatat and Intro by The Xx that I'd just thrown on softly while playing video games or whatever. My older brother also used to throw on ten hour meme videos when he'd leave for work just to make it sound like there was somebody home, so I guess they're good for something, eh?

I've listened to a few ten hour versions of songs. It's something you can do easily while doing other stuff. Actually watching something for ten hours, though, is a whole nother thing.
10 hour memes are the path to enlightenment, as you watch them you analyze them, these loops of time of pure human experience. You begin to see past the screen, past the loops, right into the collective minds of those who found it funny, and through them the rest of humanity. When you look long enough at something you stop seeing it, and when you can't see anything you are free to see everything through the pinhole you've created.
I put on the 10 hour musical loops pretty frequently and get all the way through them, Caramelldansen is my favourite out of them because it makes mindless grinding in something like an MMO or Minecraft. I also use the He-Man Heyeyeye and Guile's theme as go to songs for the same thing. But I'm also one of those people who doesn't get annoyed by metronomes, we do exist.
Since I can't get an answer anywhere else (because there's no functioning TH-cam support forum, only crappy G+), I need to ask: how do I stop the stupid issue where videos stop every five seconds while the sound continues? If you pause the video, the video plays up to the point where the audio is, but that is useless if I want to actually see a video and hear it AT THE SAME TIME. I've had this problem for half a year, it applies to videos whether they use the TH-cam player or not, and I would like a solution, if anyone has any solution at all for me to try, I'll be grateful.
I'm not sure this is a youtube issue. what browser do you use, is your computer slowing down, what's your isp, what kind of modem are you using, many factors can contribute to this. my suggestion is to try using some other computers or different combinations of the other things listed.
I hate to say it but yes the problem is your computer. In order to play the video without stuttering, the video player will play the video on a short 1-2 second delay. This is because key frames take much longer to process than delta frames. The player knows that it's going to take a quarter of a second (or whatever) to process each key frame, but significantly less time to process delta frames, so it puts a delay in the playback. This makes is to that any time lost when processing key frames can be made up before the video is actually displayed, so the video is displayed smoothly. While I agree that it is an annoyance, it's significantly better than not being able to play videos at all. Now in your case, your computer can't handle the video rendering even with the delay, so you get the worst of both worlds: both a delay and stuttering. You can try lowering the quality, but the flash player is notoriously slow anyways. You can try running the HTML 5 player which makes use of your browser's built-in video decoder, which might fare a bit better. You could also try downloading the video and playing it in a native code video player, which will usually perform much better. You lose convenience with that solution though, and it's probably in violation of Google's terms. (For reference, I have a 1.1GHz celeron laptop. It can play 1080p x264 8 bit video and 720p 10 bit video without any issues in VLC, but it has a hard time playing even 480p video on TH-cam)
I've had more than one friend (mostly college students) who will put on those 10-hour memes and just let them run in the background for their own enjoyment. that's usually when they really love the meme in question, though; I had a roommate who played the 10 hour Nyan Cat video from time to time, but she also owned and frequently wore a Nyan Cat t-shirt. I've also known people to do it with the He-Man meme, because it's actually a full song and some people really like it. I've never known anyone to sit down in front of it for that full time though... 10 hours is a long time to do any activity.

I had no clue 10h videos were invented with Nyan Cat in 2011. I'm just as surprised that you didn't mention any video that has been looped for eternity even before that though. When I've been sent a link to Nyan Cat back then I instantly thought of "Get on My Horse" which had its own website where it repeated infinitely. Oblivious to the 10h-thing I googled "Nyan Cat endless" and tehre it was: nyan.cat. I nyaned for eight hours straight. I don't know the "scene" well. I suppose this is something that happens with silly songs rather than Mid-Kup. PS: I love Nyan Cat to this day. The 10 hour loop is only the death of a meme if it either comes into someone's consciousness or if they attempt to watch them. It's usually around the time when people realize how annoying they are when they notice the 10hr version. However, while people who frequent the memesphere of the internet get tired of some of them eventually, some people are a bit more disconnected from internet culture or are a bit more immune to humorous decay... which annoys a lot of people. Trust me, an ex BF of mine thought those flip-flop caption demotivational posters from 2007-ish were funny enough to replicate out loud as of 2012. We're still friends and I can safely say he's immune to the whole "that stopped being funny 5 years ago" thing. In essence, I guess what I'm saying is that memes never really die, nor do they get reborn or re-purposed, they just kind of coast along forever with some people. I suppose you could say they're the intellectual equivalent of the perpetual motion device... only annoying and not at all useful to anyone. This phenomena isn't really limited to the internet, as you mentioned about music. While memes only have so much staying power with me, I'm still not tired of "Somebody I Used to Know" or Adele's biggest hits because I don't frequently listen to the radio and listen to albums/Spotify at my own pace and spend more time listening to other types of music. I suppose in that regard I annoy other people the same way I roll my eyes when a friend jokes "Oh no! They divided by zero!" about something.

I've listened to a few ten hour versions of songs. It's something you can do easily while doing other stuff. Actually watching something for ten hours, though, is a whole nother thing.
The upload limit is not 10 hours, I have seen much, much longer videos.

I put on the 10 hour musical loops pretty frequently and get all the way through them, Caramelldansen is my favourite out of them because it makes mindless grinding in something like an MMO or Minecraft. I also use the He-Man Heyeyeye and Guile's theme as go to songs for the same thing. But I'm also one of those people who doesn't get annoyed by metronomes, we do exist.
Since I can't get an answer anywhere else (because there's no functioning TH-cam support forum, only crappy G+), I need to ask: how do I stop the stupid issue where videos stop every five seconds while the sound continues? If you pause the video, the video plays up to the point where the audio is, but that is useless if I want to actually see a video and hear it AT THE SAME TIME. I've had this problem for half a year, it applies to videos whether they use the TH-cam player or not, and I would like a solution, if anyone has any solution at all for me to try, I'll be grateful.

Which resolution are you playing the videos at? What are your specs? Internet Connection Speed? It sounds like you have a bottleneck somewhere.
I'm not sure this is a youtube issue. what browser do you use, is your computer slowing down, what's your isp, what kind of modem are you using, many factors can contribute to this. my suggestion is to try using some other computers or different combinations of the other things listed.

I hate to say it but yes the problem is your computer. In order to play the video without stuttering, the video player will play the video on a short 1-2 second delay.
This is because key frames take much longer to process than delta frames. The player knows that it's going to take a quarter of a second (or whatever) to process each key frame, but significantly less time to process delta frames, so it puts a delay in the playback. This makes is to that any time lost when processing key frames can be made up before the video is actually displayed, so the video is displayed smoothly.
While I agree that it is an annoyance, it's significantly better than not being able to play videos at all.
Now in your case, your computer can't handle the video rendering even with the delay, so you get the worst of both worlds: both a delay and stuttering. You can try lowering the quality, but the flash player is notoriously slow anyways. You can try running the HTML 5 player which makes use of your browser's built-in video decoder, which might fare a bit better. You could also try downloading the video and playing it in a native code video player, which will usually perform much better. You lose convenience with that solution though, and it's probably in violation of Google's terms.
(For reference, I have a 1.1GHz celeron laptop. It can play 1080p x264 8 bit video and 720p 10 bit video without any issues in VLC, but it has a hard time playing even 480p video on TH-cam)
I've had more than one friend (mostly college students) who will put on those 10-hour memes and just let them run in the background for their own enjoyment. that's usually when they really love the meme in question, though; I had a roommate who played the 10 hour Nyan Cat video from time to time, but she also owned and frequently wore a Nyan Cat t-shirt. I've also known people to do it with the He-Man meme, because it's actually a full song and some people really like it. I've never known anyone to sit down in front of it for that full time though... 10 hours is a long time to do any activity.

I think the ten hour loop is an evolution of the looping flash. e.g. Leek Spin, You are a Pirate, RGB, Skeet, Narwhals, Badger, Etc...
I think the 10 hour version of memes are much like the grave stone or a funeral. i would like to think of it like the celebration of what was great of it and remembering it's short life.

I had no clue 10h videos were invented with Nyan Cat in 2011. I'm just as surprised that you didn't mention any video that has been looped for eternity even before that though. When I've been sent a link to Nyan Cat back then I instantly thought of "Get on My Horse" which had its own website where it repeated infinitely. Oblivious to the 10h-thing I googled "Nyan Cat endless" and tehre it was: nyan.cat. I nyaned for eight hours straight.
I don't know the "scene" well. I suppose this is something that happens with silly songs rather than Mid-Kup.
PS: I love Nyan Cat to this day. It made me discover Vocaloid (which could use an episode), Touhou (which could use an episode), House, Trance, Techno, Lolicore (which could use an episode), Hardcore, Breakcore, IDM, Cybergrind and Death Metal. Thank you endless Nyan Cat.

I only managed to listen to Epic Sax Guy for a little over 2 hours. Great music for getting things done at first, but it starts to do weird things to your brain after awhile. Felt like I was constantly waking up from a dream state or something.
The 10 hour loop is only the death of a meme if it either comes into someone's consciousness or if they attempt to watch them. It's usually around the time when people realize how annoying they are when they notice the 10hr version. However, while people who frequent the memesphere of the internet get tired of some of them eventually, some people are a bit more disconnected from internet culture or are a bit more immune to humorous decay... which annoys a lot of people. Trust me, an ex BF of mine thought those flip-flop caption demotivational posters from 2007-ish were funny enough to replicate out loud as of 2012. We're still friends and I can safely say he's immune to the whole "that stopped being funny 5 years ago" thing. In essence, I guess what I'm saying is that memes never really die, nor do they get reborn or re-purposed, they just kind of coast along forever with some people. I suppose you could say they're the intellectual equivalent of the perpetual motion device... only annoying and not at all useful to anyone.
This phenomena isn't really limited to the internet, as you mentioned about music. While memes only have so much staying power with me, I'm still not tired of "Somebody I Used to Know" or Adele's biggest hits because I don't frequently listen to the radio and listen to albums/Spotify at my own pace and spend more time listening to other types of music. I suppose in that regard I annoy other people the same way I roll my eyes when a friend jokes "Oh no! They divided by zero!" about something.
We should make a new trend by watching people watch 10 hour videos for 10 hours.
Occasionally, the ten minute ones were fucking priceless. When the 10 minute mudkip thing happened, I sat at my friend's and watched the entire thing. repeatedly. until I felt I'd gone insane. 10 hours has gone too far, but it's still funny. What kills memes is people just repeating them ad naseum until nobody understands the point of the meme.
