    I have some terrible floorboards they wobble, sit lower than others or are just generally sh*te since modern electrician and plumber got at them within the past 16 years! They had lasted perfectly well over the life time of my house (built 1895) pre tradesmen, and I use the word 'tradesmen' very loosely. The boards have really bothered me but now thanks to your video I feel confident enough to tackle them and make them good again. Thanks for explaining things easily enough that even I understood.

    Just been through the exact same thing in my spare room. Great tip on using the end of the pliers for the nails. I have those pliers and never thought about that so much appreciated!

    Excellent tips mate, just been doing my bathroom floorboards up & learning a lot from your videos, I love doing DIY at my old age of 62, lol
    Thanks

    So useful to see how you assess the problem, but especially how you use the tools.

    the only thing is the electrician and the plumber they could done a better job with the cable and the pipes but you managed to sort it out good work enjoyed the video.

    V helpful. I noticed that you didn't screw the repaired end into the 2 blocks that you had fitted next to the electrical cables

    What do you reckon about sanded and polished floor boards as a basic wood floor. I think they look great. But are there downsides?

    • @HumanBeingOnPlanet
      @HumanBeingOnPlanet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Can look really nice. But lacking any form of sound dampening from under and top flooring layers like laminate or carpet for example. So really noisy for the occupants of the floor level below. Would advise against it if you share the building with others.

  • @harwoods11

    Could you not have just moved the longer board down and the shorter board up and then fitted blocks to secure? Or even cut in a new full length board?

    Tackling our landing soon. Nails into chipboard! Squeak city. Bought myself a cats paw to pull every last god forsaken nail. Then using some 4 x 60mm SPAX wirox TX countersunk screws with joist acoustic tape on top of the joists. That earth wire is an horrific bit of wiring.

    Wow that is scary. Makes you wonder what other problems are in that house.

  • @ski7470
    @ski7470 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Looks like a lot of the other floor boards do not have any nails in them either. Vey shoddy electrics to notch them in to the joist like that and leave the earth on top of the joist.

    • @Brynoize
      @Brynoize 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the notches were probably done long before drills were widely used.

  • @dethcreeper69
    @dethcreeper69 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    OK never seen a nail removed that way. Mental note made 😁
    Why do cowboys insist on notching?
    Drill a hole through the joists it's safer all round

    • @ACAIDC
      @ACAIDC ปีที่แล้ว

      When fitting copper pipe or waste pipes notching is the only option.

  • @trechen100
    @trechen100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you really put the drill into reverse to remove a nail ? I know it's probably habit. lol .
    Easy to remove long nails with hammer - you already have the packing to hand.
    Love you video's. I'll never stop viewing.

    I've lifted all my carpets so I can access my floorboards. My question was, can I just screw down the floorboards without taking out the old nails? Or do I have to lift each floorboard and remove all of the old nails???

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You need to be careful because you have no idea what is under each floorboard. Wires and pipes must be located, so you are 100% sure your not about to screw or hammer into them. thanks

      @EmmVee999 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PaintingandDecorating sorry. I meant in the places where I know it's clear. If it is already nailed down, can I just go over with screws or do I have to take out the old nails?

  • @squeakmillward

    I would have butted a piece of notched out 3x2 across 3 boards and screwed them down from the top

  • @creativeLtu2
    @creativeLtu2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Not a pro DIY'er here, but shouldn't you use flooring screws instead of random ones? Using wrong screws/nails that's what make them pop out over time eventually?

    Made me cringe, you should never hit two hammer heads together like that they can easily shatter or pieces chip off and fly around like shrapnel. One of the first lessons in engineering but also applies to woodwork or in fact any task. Both are hardened steel and therefore brittle when struck against something of equal hardness.
