It’s great how the shape of the Airtight Seasoning is still in the same shaped bottle but now, a plastic one instead of the old metal bottles. I remember melting it in a bain marie pan. I used to hang my seasoned bag up above the bath and scrubbed it off so my mother wouldn’t be annoyed lol. Ah, those were the days sigh.
Oh yes, I remember figuring out how to make a makeshift doubleboiler back in the day to heat my Airtight. Typically involved a sauce pan, a clothes hanger and luck....
Hi Matt,I have an L&M as well, and recently installed a split stock with a water trap built in, in the blowpipe to help reduce excess moisture. How would I inflate the bag when I season it? Do I have the water trap tube in and just clean it thoroughly when finished the season process?Another question, how often to season, or how to tell when it is needed.Great videos, I learn so much with them!
Glad you are enjoying the videos! There are a few different models of split stock tube traps, but most should let you detach the tube. If you can't, your only real option is to season as per normal and clean the tube after. But hopefully you can find a way to remove the tube for seasoning. As for how often, I test my bag monthly. Cork it up, inflate, wait 15-20 seconds... If I can blow any additional air into the bag, it's time to add a bit of seasoning.
Great thanks! The tube is removeable so can be easily cleaned, but the bag would then not be airtight. I will find a way to get it next time I season it.
Some folks have used various sealants when they start leaking (not certain as to what they use). I replace the bag when a synthetic starts leaking. I don't trust a sealant to hold long term and you never know when it might spring a leak again. Seasoning does not work in a synthetic bag, it would just make a mess...
I have a Begg cowhide bag. I noticed that there were bubbles forming around the stitching on the underside of the bag when I seasoned it just now. I now know why it was a struggle for me to keep my bag full. Now that I've seasoned it, should it be airtight again (hence the name on the bottle lol) or is my bag ruptured ? I hope not :( Thanks so much!
Hi Matt I am Ramesh from India and I am in now police bagpipe band. I want to know how to hygiene this hide bag. In India synthetic bags are not available . here only handcrafted leather bag available. I am a fan ur. Always find to learn new skills from ur vedios. How to hygiene the traditional hiding bag . After playing many kind of viruses stay there.
Good question! Seasoning the bag should be enough. There are anti-microbial chemicals in it to help keep bacteria down. As for their efficacy, I cannot speak for that, but pipers with properly seasoned bags don't tend to get sick from their instruments.

Thanks Matt, very helpful and think the paper towel is great way to save some work later on
First "seasong" by me of the Hagen leather. Much tighter now used 3oz(1/4 jar) of Airtight. We will see what the morning practice brings.
Let us know how it goes for you!

Hay matt what are differences or pros and cons of a leather vs synthetic bag?
I go into it a bit at 23:30 in this video: th-cam.com/video/bphz8rEeCfs/w-d-xo.html

I just got an old new stock L&M rediscovering the leather tied-in feel.. I’m surprised how different the L&M’s feel comfort wise….

Hi Matt. Do you have any advice on a gore-tex bag that is leaking air? Does this type synthetic fabric would accept any seasoning substance?

Which type of bag is it
That's an old L&M bag. Don't make those any more!

Has it remained airtight? I'll occasionally get a bit of seasoning out of the welt on stitched bags, but the Airtight fixes it most of the time.
@@MattWillisBagpiper yes it did! I'm glad a little seasoning coming out of the seam is normal. Thank you, sir! Love your videos!
