The Nations League is actually a far better tournament than it generally gets credit for. For one thing it produces reliably tight games since most teams competing are at similar levels. This is not just good for minnows like San Marino, but also at the other end of the scale. More regularly playing top international rivals has most likely helped England to kick on and reach major finals. And this year's competition has perhaps also helped Scotland and Wales to step up. An all-round beneficial effect and plenty of entertainment for the fans instead of the routine tedium of old-fashioned friendlies. Absolutely. In club football, tiny sides can at least play competitive games to win cups against similar sides. There was nothing like that for international minnows.
San Marino needs to arrange some friendlies with countries like Anguilla, Samoa or Seychelles. I’m 100% certain that they will beat all of those nations. @@3lettersl0lbro I mean they need to arrange one NOW, or at least soon during the next international break, whilst they’re still in this good form. I wanna see them against other similarly small, low ranked nations on other continents
That is what I have thought all along. There is no way that San Marino are the worst national team in the world. Bar New Zealand, they would be one of the stronger nations in the OFC region. I also think they would at least be on par with some of the lower ranking teams in Africa, Asia and the CONCACAF region. It is just unfortunate that their geographical location means they are in the strongest confederation with so many powerhouse nations of the game so they regularly take heavy beatings. It is like putting a National League team in the Premier League. Of course they are going to look bad by comparison.
If San Marino's current display is astonishing, Liechtenstein's plunge into a level where they are even outclassed by San Marino isn't any less gobsmacking. Lest we forget in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers, Liechtenstein managed to get a 2-2 home draw (and a hard-fought 1-2 away loss) to a Portuguese team at their biggest peak up until them, straight out being Euro 2004 finalists, as well as winning their two games against Luxembourg by 4-0 and 3-0.

In case anyone is wondering, it's highly recommend to watch Maqwell's own video about San Marino. This Vietnamese guy had even posted about the history of the worst national football team (it was an old video, maybe in 2021). Couple things you missed regarding San Marino: 1.The infamous Davide Gualtieri's goal against England during 1994 World Cup qualifiers. That goal prevented England for even playing in the tournament, despite winning 7-1. San Marino were 1-0 up for 20 minutes! That goal was also the fastest one in the World Cup qualifiers until Belgium's Christian Benteke did so against Gibraltar during 2018 World Cup qualifiers. The Suns had even posted a major headline after that game with "End of the World". Also, earlier that stage, San Marino grabbed a historic goalless draw against Turkey. 2.San Marino drew 1-1 against Latvia during 2002 World Cup qualifiers away. After that humiliating result, Latvian coach (can't remember that name) was immediately sacked. Latvia had even played in Euro 2004 after this disastrous draw vs San Marino. 3.In Euro 2008 qualifiers, San Marino lost to Republic of Ireland away, but just barely because the Irish scored a last minute winning goal at thay time. 4.When San Marino played against England in 2014 World Cup qualifiers at Wembley, all of San Marino players on line up presentation (as seen in ITV) were displayed as regular jobs instead of the professional clubs they play on. This is a funny thing that I noticed. 5.San Marino, Liechtenstein, and Gibraltar were drawn into the same group of the Nations League D in 2020-21 season. At that time, San Marino had 2 goalless draws (Liechtenstein away and Gibraltar at home).
Minor point, San Marino's goal against England didn't prevent them qualifying as they were also reliant on Poland beating the Netherlands. They lost 3-1 thus rendering England's score irrelevant. San Marino also hit the post in that game.

There were 3 fans of 8th tier team Hadley FC at the famous 3-1 away win celebrating with the away fans and players. This follows on from the friendly match the club played in San Marino this summer where we took on San Marino top flight side Juvenes/Dogana. The Hadley San Marino flag had an excellent location inside the stadium and was spotted multiple times by fans watching on tv.
One thing I think is overlooked is how impressive some these "hammerings" are. To go to Wembley and ONLY lose 5-0 is pretty incredible considering it is a team of amateurs and semi-pros. Imagine the equivilant UK club side playing a full strength England team, it would like a team in the 8th tier pulling that off. Losing 5-0 would be seen as pretty incredible.
As a proud Irish man, I'd love to visit SM to witness some proud people . I'm more of a rugby man myself. Do they have a rugby team? I have played Luxembourg!
The thing is with San Marino they used to sit back and let opponents keep on having shots and loads of passes around the box but now they are actually going for it a bit more and getting results
It,s really nice to see for the Sam, Marino players and fans especially I said for years they should start so something like the nations league as it would help teams like San Marino and litchenstein and luxemberg and also they should start something like the conference leauge as it would be better for teams from the smaller European leagues
I believe its simply because they are playing teams at their level and not getting heavily beaten constantly. Confidence is growing. It's a credit to the idea of the Nations League,a more fair and even competition based on meritocracy, not reputation or commercial bias.

As much as we rag on UEFA, credit where credit is due, the Nations League has turned out to be quite a success, for the top nations there isn't really any change they'd be playing the same teams in friendlies had it not been invented but for the teams in Leagues C & D it actually gives them a chance at regular competitive games & and outside but slim chance at major tournament qualification. And looking ahead, tbf given the right draw San Marino could survive League C or at least be competitive enough to end up in the playoffs rather than direct relegation. Provided they avoid a bunch of the League B relegated teams I could see them giving Luxemborg, Latvia, Faroe Islands, Cyprus, Estonia more than a good game & picking up a result or two along the way. A couple of draw should see them avoid direct relegation
Alfie, need a video on Montpellier HSC. Famous for winning the 11/12 title, and managed to stay in the Ligue 1 for 12 or so years, which now seems to end with poor performance, more so than Lyon.
I love the Nations Leagues, both UEFA and CONCACAF. They both give tiny nations a chance to play meaningful games that have balanced competitive talent levels. These national teams now can have hope for real investment and pride.
The country has seen success elsewhere in recent years too. In the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games San Marino won their first ever Olympic medals. 1 silver and 2 bronze all in one Olympic Games. Making them the smallest nation ever to win an Olympic medal. As someone who is from New Zealand who only wishes for the club in which I support to do well. I genuinely want San Marino to do well because for me Success isn't always about trophies or Money (I say this as a spurs fan so what do you expect 😂) you can find the same genuine elation and happiness just seeing an underdog get a good result
I also realized one thing: they completely didn’t have other games than “official” throughout the years. When I’m able to remember Andorra, Liechtenstein or Luxembourg (pre 2010-ish years) friendly games - not with San Marino. They always played for unobtainable, but real prize - World Cup or European Championship slots, so their enemies were ALWAYS under extra pressure. To easily win (because other will), to score many goals (because other will prob will) and to deny pot. PR disaster (fun fact - when Andorra won and drew vs Macedonia in 2006 WC Quali their opponent coach resigned…). I remember seeing years ago a video about a tribute for Titani’s team. That even if they don’t know how to play in this game so well, even when they’re defeated muntiple times, even that they need to play for a singular goal scored… they still care. They really wanna to show a world that on a Apennine peninsula, surrounded by an Italy - there is a small nation there, and they're proud to represent them. Many years later… nothing changed here, right? Just everything else changed. PS. On Monday I’d choose two games to watch: my my fatherland, Poland vs Scotland in Div A or San Marino vs Liechtenstein. After many useless performances and scandals with my national team I chose second one. POL vs SCO watched a day later. I’m afraid I chose wisely. To 3:1 goal BOTH team cared about scoring and trying more than TOP30 worldwide, containing many players respected nationally team.
I wish there were more clips from the England game back in the 90s (iirc) where England had to win 6-0 to qualify for whatever tournament it was and San Marino went 1-0 in 10 seconds! England won 7-1 I think but it was a massive shock at the time and even being English, I thought it was amazing!!

Well, it's got a different name now, but the circuit is the same.
That's just Imola now
@@dannydarkspace My sincerest apologies.
Imola isn't even in San Marino...
@@carltonleboss My sincerest apologies.
33:39 - If they qualify for the World Cup give the entire squad and staff sainthoods immediately!
An uncle of mine works in the Vatican as a researcher, got me San Marino's and the Vatican team's shirts, cant wait
Maybe the Nations League isn't such a waste of time after all when every team competes in parity to the other including San Marino who would end up being humiliated whenever they compete in the International qualifiers so this sort of format is something worth celebrating for them
28:19 "...chanting 'Can we play you every week?" I've been sitting here laughing at that image for a good 2 minutes. Day/made.
we should add bonus that i'm sure players from san marino lichtenstein and gibraltar will creat some friendships playing agains each other often
A video about 7 of the best naturalized players! It's a big topic here in Indonesia since half our national team are foreign born
6:41 chill guy fr
7:00 love the geography now mention, wonder if he is also as interested at San Marino's football success
Have never been this quick on a video
I've got a video suggestion, can you make a video about the 7 teams that have gotten the most performance out of the lowest value? So maybe like leicester 2015 winning pl, or ajax getting to ucl semis. Both teams with great performance, Low value at the time?
San marino: we are the worst team in the world
American samoa: hold my kava
Great video and really informative I loved it Dathai the Irish poet known as Dave J Syms ❤
Nice "crossover" with Geography Now mentionned, and maqwell's 2nd Twitter account being in the San Marino fan account's screenshot
Thanks for the shout out to Puerto Rico ❤️ we're terrible at football, baseball is what we're good at 😅 that and dealing with hurricanes
22:43 What is going?
they have always been amazing, it's just now us mere mortals are allowed to see it :)
Barbs getting a shout out is awesome
Seeing as the other two teams have professional clubs and professional players, San Marino getting promoted is a big suprise
Liechtenstein doesn't even have its own league system
One thing I think is overlooked is how impressive some these "hammerings" are. To go to Wembley and ONLY lose 5-0 is pretty incredible considering it is a team of amateurs and semi-pros.
Imagine the equivilant UK club side playing a full strength England team, it would like a team in the 8th tier pulling that off. Losing 5-0 would be seen as pretty incredible.
As a proud Irish man, I'd love to visit SM to witness some proud people
. I'm more of a rugby man myself. Do they have a rugby team? I have played Luxembourg!
The thing is with San Marino they used to sit back and let opponents keep on having shots and loads of passes around the box but now they are actually going for it a bit more and getting results
I thought this was a video on Dan Marino for a minute. . . .my mistake. J/K love ya HITC Sevens.
St Kitts has a lot of players playing in England like Romaine Saywers who used to play for Cardiff, or probably still do.
What on earth is going on with the Ghana national team?
WIGAN MENTIONED IN THE FIRST SECOND🔥🔥
It,s really nice to see for the Sam, Marino players and fans especially I said for years they should start so something like the nations league as it would help teams like San Marino and litchenstein and luxemberg and also they should start something like the conference leauge as it would be better for teams from the smaller European leagues
Alfie, you better make video about Liechtenstein downfall because it is really happening.
22:42 Now THAT is a haircut
Do you think they’d beat hull
I believe its simply because they are playing teams at their level and not getting heavily beaten constantly. Confidence is growing. It's a credit to the idea of the Nations League,a more fair and even competition based on meritocracy, not reputation or commercial bias.
Just feed it a Liechtenstein and you succeed
Jamaican football is far better for a tiny island ... big up reggae boyz. Alfie is one of the smartest on earth ... what if u didnt do only football... keep it up this is very educating
Amazing being an overstatement
“Speaker at trump rally” so happened to be a comedian who’s infamous for those kinds of jokes. Puerto Rico are also famous for similar comic types, I wouldn’t view that as disrespect
I’d love to see how they’d do in the AFC, CONCACAF and OFC qualifiers out of curiosity…
You should do a video about the job Damien Duff did at shelbourne FC
Wrote yourself into a bit of trance at the end there huh outstanding
I wish there were more clips from the England game back in the 90s (iirc) where England had to win 6-0 to qualify for whatever tournament it was and San Marino went 1-0 in 10 seconds! England won 7-1 I think but it was a massive shock at the time and even being English, I thought it was amazing!!
the nations league, for all its... inconveniences for larger nation, has created a chance for minnows to shine
Best German players in the premier league of all time. (Day 700)
Alternativly you could do "Best German players who played outside the Bundesliga" or something like that if you prefer.
I will not give up until the video is made or Alfie himself tells me to stop. Everyone else telling me that will be ignored.
If you don't believe my number, just go back to the previous videos. I'm at the bottom most of the time, but I'm there.

Do an episode on Ghana as they just failed to qualify for AFCON
Why isn't there a yearly friendly between each team and their neighbouring ranked country? 1 vs 2, 3vs4 and so on ?
Cevoli came in and went young, and this is probably the first Sammarinese generation with several players on the fringes of professional football.
#thepeopleschannel a video on the Bangladesh premier league and the rise of Bashundhara kings would be good
A team who went into the top flight after promotion and won the last Six league titles now!
Are they the next Newcastle? Are they a team to keep a eye on next few years? Thanks Alfie 😊
Tbf to San Marino they did very well to draw a 2 on 1 handicap match against St Kitts & Nevis
See Tim Traveller's videos on watching San Marino games. They're brilliant
I was not ready for a HITC/Tony Hinchcliffe crossover today 😅
16:33 hey thats turners cross :D
There'll be a film about this!
San Marinos greatest disadvance is being an UEFA member. They are not the worst, almost everyone else in UEFA is just leagues better. They'd fare well against a lot of the small islands.
Basically the nations league has been great for the small teams and lets them actually develop. I really hope San Marino develop from this
