What a lot of tourists do not understand is that these people are not actors or performers, they are real soldiers on duty. This is one of their deployments, but they have usually served elsewhere in the army. This job is hard and thankless, they have to wear a very heavy full dress uniform in any weather and mostly guard against tourists who behave like children and treat them like objects.

They are often regarded as only there for show, actors acting a part, and very few bother to look and check exactly who/what they are when they AREN'T doing public guard duty. So ignorant - and not just of the guards in London, I've seen similar comments about both the Swiss Guard in the Vatican and the Norwegian servicemen (when they were recently in Edinburgh for the tattoo and were videoed at Edinburgh Zoo presenting an award to their superior officer, which really garnered some very offensive comments from the totally ignorant and disrespectful). They seem to think that because they have a long tradition and wear dress uniforms that reflect that tradition they are no different to Hollywood/Disney actors playing a part at Disneyland or Universal Studios.
Utterly pathetic and seems to be something that is becoming more and more common, certainly when I was a kid (and I grew up in NZ) we knew that all the the guards - no matter how fancy their dress uniforms - were serving officers in their respective countries militaries.

I suppose putting a hand on the horse's reins is like trying to put a hand on the soldier's gun, or some other extension of his/her equipment. Looks like people are permitted to stand close by for photos which is fair enough. But who thinks it's okay to take a high-pitched squealing child and put her face next to a horse, with a sign 'watch out for biting and kicking' right next to that? D'oh!

And not just the British military, the Norwegian Military in dress uniform come in for a lot of comments comparing them to Disney/Hollywood guards in fairytales (recent visit for the tattoo when they visited their commander in Edinburgh Zoo - several offensive comments about him as well).

The horse and guard are there for their amusement, they're a tourist attraction. The police do the actual guarding and respond to threats, all of these areas are swarming with heavily armed police. Having said that the guards should be treated with complete respect, and the horses even more so. They add a very rich layer of history for visitors, but they are doing a job and should be admired from a suitable distance, something that seems to be too difficult for the selfie generation.

@@reflectionsinthebible3579 They do get switched out every hour, they do NOT spend all their lives in a tiny stall, they certainly turn out far more than a couple of times a year, and they spend their holidays up on the beaches in Norfolk every year. He is talking a lot of codswallop and obviously knows nothing about the cavalry at all. There are videos on TH-cam showing the horses, where they live, how they are cared for, them on holidays running on the beaches and swimming in the seas and more than a few showing them out on parade in London doing their stint of guard duty on a regular basis.
If you like horses, look up videos of the Kings Royal Horse Artillery (and they don't live in small stalls either) and they includes videos of them all running in the surf along the beaches in Norfolk.

As a rider what that ignorant woman did was incredibly dangerous, firstly she stands in the way of other tourists who wants a picture because obviously she feels entitled to have her picture taken before anyone else who is waiting for a turn, but the danger of grabbing the the face strap of a horse which is obviously not at a petting zoo who is at least 2000 pounds is unbelievable. I don’t care how well a horse is trained, they can and will spook at anything, she put not only herself, the rider, everyone around in danger, but in my opinion as a horse lover the horse itself in the most danger,I think those horses having to stand on concrete or rock surface is cruel anyway, horses hooves are not made to just stand on concrete continuously with who knows how many people continuously pawing at their muzzle or ears or necks etc.
