Sweet reinvented themselves every few years. First Bubblegum pop (Little Willie) then Glam Rock (Ballroom Blitz) then prog rock (Love Is Like Oxygen) but all masterfully done
Just like the corporations that took over the independent FM radio stations of the late sixties and early seventies. Profit over content. At least with TH-cam we can skip the ones we don't like. In the radio days, if they wanted you to hear Elton John umpteen times a day, well then, you were going to hear Elton John umpteen times a day. Do they care? No. (and don't get me started on the oversaturation of commercials on TH-cam - geez) Peace.
We were all crazy chilled stoned to the bone…….just listen with your eyes closed, the music blasting and your imagination going crazy!! I still do and I’m 60!
Glam rock was the first music genre of my generation and produce such wonderful artists including the sweet along with Slade, T-Rex, Mott the Hoople, roxy music and of course the king of glam rock David Bowie.
YESSSSS!!!! Those are all my favorite bands. I'm such a big glam rock fan. I just graduated high school and sadly almost nobody my age knows any of them 🙁
Big Mott the Hoople fan here. Please react to “All the Young Dudes.” I just discovered you and have been bingeing on your Beatle reactions! You’re doing a great job.
A few years later Brian Connolly was attacked after a show, he was kicked (purposely) in the throat and never had that great voice afterwards. I I always thought it was Steve Priest that would get in trouble one day since he never hid his derision. R.I.P. Brian, Steve, Mick. Thanks for the reaction. Sweet was a great band, Brian had the best rock voice and Steve had his counterpoint to Brians. Mick was very underrated as a drummer. Sadly, only Andy is left. Try Teenage Rampage, Fox on the Run, Blockbuster, Love is Like Oxygen, Little Willy, the Sixteens, Wig Wam Bam, and there are so many more.
I note you mention the singles but SWEET were so much more than that. Check out the Albums and tracks like Yesterday's Rain, Solid Gold Brass, She Gimme Lovin', Windy City, White Mice, Set Me Free, Hard Times, No You Don't etc..... & not forgetting the brilliant B-Sides and early tracks like The Juicer, & its Lonely Out There.
I've got this on 45 (Yeah , I'm that old) These guys were one of my favorite bands when I was in high school in the 70's . I always thought they were way better then Queen and Queen actually used to take many of these guys ideas for their own (Many bands like Bowie did ) They are worth checking out as they have a very diverse repertoire and defined many hair bands like Motley Crue in the '80's . This is at a time when looking like they did could get you physically hurt .
"The Ballroom Blitz" was inspired by an incident on 27 January 1973 when the band were performing at the Grand Hall in Kilmarnock, Scotland, and were driven offstage by the audience throwing bottles at them. The only original member left of Sweet is Andy Scott lead guitarist. RIP Brian Connolly lead singer, Steve Priest bass player and Mick Tucker drummer.
Great reaction Harri. This brings back memories of my pre-teen years lol. Apparently Sweet wrote this after they performed a gig in Kilmarnock, Scotland and were driven off stage by a barrage of bottles being thrown at them! Stay safe🤘✌
SWEET, "BALL ROOM BLITZ". NEVER THAT I CAN REMEMBER WAS MUSIC DIVIDED INTO GLAM ROCK, PROG ROCK , PSYCHEDELIC ROCK, AND SO ON. WHAT I REMEMBER IS IT WAS JUST THE YOUNGER GENERATION'S MUSIC. ALL FOR ONE. ONE FOR ALL. MORE SWEET "FOX ON THE RUN".. "LOVE IS LIKE OXYGEN...
Harri - I enjoy your insights. You always cut through the glitz, although giving it a mention, to understand just what is behind the music. Your low key approach and melodic voice are worth the time to spend with you. Thanks for all you do.
Glam rock was fun and ironic and sometimes just down right silly, but always had a great beat and over the top fashion.. around the same time "Rocky Horror Picture Show' came out. Yes, definitely British! Check out the video 'Time Warp" from Rocky Horror if you want a really fun trip down the glam rock period! Peace and love as always Harri
Yeah I was gonna say something on that but you beat me to it, it was actually based on a true even where the audience attacked them and the concept for this song was born. Sweet fans know this but those that just listen to one or two of the more popular songs by them likely wouldn't unless they dug into Sweet's history.
You should react to set me free by sweet. It has a completely different feel to it. (The video for it on youtube is fan made using parts of this video so you could just listen to it without the video)
I lived through the Glam Rock era, but was very little. I didn’t know it was a genre of music, but I always loved The Sweet, T-Rex and David Bowie. I agree, I always took it to mean there was a fight that broke out while they were playing. I can imagine there being trouble when this song was played, too. LOL.
It's not my story, but the reason for that song is they done a gig in Kilmarnock something happened at the gig there was no such song as Ballroom Blitz but Brian Connolly and the rest of the band realised there was a song in there because someone at the back of the Crowd shouted attack that's why the man at the back said everyone attack and it basically turned into a fight scrap Ballroom Blitz.ps love your reaction big chap. Donald Glasgow Scotland
For a other good glam rock try Tiger Feet by Mud for a good time. Only joking do I suggest that this was the inspiration for Bowie with his later Cat People song ( putting out fire with gasolene)
Per Wikipedia: ""The Ballroom Blitz" was inspired by an incident on 27 January 1973 when the band were performing at the Grand Hall in Kilmarnock, Scotland, and were driven offstage by a bottling."
Great man! I did grow up with their music.Check their more epic songs like The sixteens, Hellraiser, Turn it down, or Fox on the run, Love is like oxygen,..😉👍
Blockbuster was another popular hit but slade were bigger for my generation they started off as a skinhead band and became a bit glam but the music was loud n raw a proper boys band
I agree with you Alan! My brother who is older by nearly three years, loved Slade, however I thought they were a bit heavy! I liked The Sweet and their songs! Stay safe! P.S. My brother’s name is Allan! Lol!
You made an interesting statement about people's reaction to glam rockers back then. If you ever check out interviews from back then from people like Dick Clark, you'll see how uncomfortable they were when having to interview Alice Cooper, Kiss, New York Dolls, and probably The Sweet. They tried to relate to them like Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons, but you can see the discomfort in their face.
Now watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show, the bit where Frankie (Tim Curry) first appears. Wonder how much influence the Legendary Steve Priests OTT Camp performances had on the character of Frankie and Tim Currys portrayal. Just a Thought.
Harri, I think now it's time for the king of glam, David Bowie. Especially his Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars era. Ziggy Stardust Moonage Daydream Suffragette City Jean Genie
"Sweet" is cool and all... but do you know "Salt-N-Pepa"? ... "Spice Girls"? ... "Red Hot Chili Peppers"? ... "Korn"? ... "Cream?"? "Vanilla Ice"?...- wait that's Sweet again! D:
This song/video is from 1973. Fox on the Run and Love Is Like Oxygen were also huge hits in the US.
Sweet reinvented themselves every few years. First Bubblegum pop (Little Willie) then Glam Rock (Ballroom Blitz) then prog rock (Love Is Like Oxygen) but all masterfully done
Yes. Love Is Like Ozygen💯💯
For some reason TH-cam music reactors always react to Ballroom Blitz it would make a nice change to see a reaction to there other big hit blockbuster.
Totally agree. Have noticed a distinct following of all reactors that its always the same songs and videos.
My fave is Hellraiser ⭐

They had more than two hits, way more 😀 have a search, bet you know more than you think 👍🏼

@@leemcintyre9490 I didn't include Gary Glitter for obvious reasons.

The marriage of Glam and Hard Rock.

They didn’t write it but it was based on an incident at one of their gigs. Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman are the songwriters

"Blockbuster" was a number one hit for Sweet in the UK but no one has done a reaction to it!!!!
ill check it out..Looks like this was a bigger hit though
Blockbuster was bigger but Ballroom Blitz was covered in the film Wayne's World, my old man did the after party after the London premiere
They had a lot of great music at 10 great songs that you can listen to
Harri - I enjoy your insights. You always cut through the glitz, although giving it a mention, to understand just what is behind the music. Your low key approach and melodic voice are worth the time to spend with you. Thanks for all you do.
Good fun. Try Fox on The Run by The Sweet Harry
I'll check it out!

This song is based on an actual event. The "manly" crowd didn't like the lipstick and clothes, so they attacked them.
😂🤣😂😂😂😂

Maybe it was nothing. Don't analyze the tune. Yes they were an English band. The best bands came from England.
