Students: Should You Major in CS?

- A lot of high school and college kids have asked if they should stick with computer science as a major, especially given the rise of AI technologies. Here's some suggestions on how to approach this decision...

The CS degree is useful if you learn to apply it.... so learn it to apply it on projects... ask yourself what will be a cool project I can do use this in it... what industry can this be used in... Also be aware that the university's job is not to land you a job or career, it's to basically make a masters student, which is nice too tbh. u got this.
that is the entire strength. If you manage to have a CS degree and you study beyond that for the practical work and current changes then you are much more suited than a person without a degree. It is basically a key to management positions etc..

Because of the AI, this question is pretty much valid for most of the currently existing jobs
One should consider majoring in Computer Engineering instead of Computer Science, as it opens opportunities in both CS-related jobs and the semiconductor chip industry. Many semiconductor jobs are returning to the US.
Why are they returning? Is it cheaper to do it here now?
@@vladislav4646 They are returning to US since semiconductors and AI are the important to the next phase of US growth
If you’re almost done with your cs degree how would you learn the hardware side for the semi conductor industry?
@@dencentbeatz794 You can try to do a double majors or a ms in electrical engineering. Companies hiring in this space are : Amd, Intel,Nvidia,Qualcomm,Mentor Graphics,Micron,Lam Research,Analog Devices etc. Next decade growth might come from hardware companies building infra from AI
@@sudeepmaity6243 thanks. Is there any way to self study these concepts at all? I will def consider an EE masters, but I’m not sure I’d be able to finish all the reqs for CE in a 4 year time frame. I’m in progress for a data science degree as well and can’t leave that hanging at this point. One of my friends is a cs major but is working in embedded systems currently. He got it through working with firmware at club on campus. If I use my spare time to really hone in cpu/ gpu design development concepts and join labs at my school on computer architecture or robotics would that aid in my knowledge overall as an engineer in tech? I have a pretty technical background and I am taking a lot of higher level machine learning and statistics classes. If I learn a lot of hardware concepts on my own can I leverage my knowledge in these fields in the industry?

Perhaps a lot of discussions about the effect of AI on a given industry (CS, legal, education etc), to some extent, often avoids acknowledging the complexity behind these industries. So the kind of binary scenario @ChangeNode suggests seems on track - if we don't need X person any more (to help facilitate getting things done in these complex environments) we're not going to need a lot of people for a lot of things. Watch with way the wind blows and don't worry about these kind of mass extinctionish events.

My question is: Should you pivot into IT/IT management?
Assuming either you are currently studying, or competed your studies.
Whether you specifically study management or not, if you're in IT, it's likely you'll eventually get promoted to an IT management position at some point in your career. IMO, just study and get good at whatever it is you want to learn.
IT is a sort of broader catch all than CS. FWIW I think if you have a CS degree you could do lots of IT functions.
IT management at a BigCo means a lot more politics. More money but only if you get pretty senior.
If you really want to make $ IMHO study anything but always do it from the perspective of starting your own company. Even a terrible job can become interesting if you are treating it as a research project for eventually starting your own company. So in that sense, IT management is absolutely a key transition step.
I was initially certain that total end-to-end software development would fall first (and, TBF, I still am 70% certain on that), but now I'm beginning to sense the possibility of things like AI AC repairman being made by the time coding is truly dead.
I'm also a little hopeful, that even if coding gets to total abandonment first, that the delay before the next major industry implodes is small enough that there will be a general political movement.
At the very least, we MUST abolish taxes. There's no way governments can extract from valueless people. I think that's the scarier part. Forget the potential social ills of welfare on the people. What is government like, when the people don't pay for it? Does it therefor just assume total dictatorial power to command production?
CS “started” in 1945 with ENIAC and now 2024 it’s under threat to be annihilated by its own creations, what other field of science achieved that ?
I mean there are people older then that god dam computer

Bad advice. There will be limited jobs left in CS and tech. You can do it as a hobby if you like, it will not help you become rich or wealthy, anymore...
@sunnybhatti9567 FWIW I do talk about it not being a path to riches, instead benchmarking it to eg accounting...
Becoming rich is entirely up to you. You can't blame the AI for not being rich or successful. Then again, if AGI comes, then the need for money will vanish along with it.
Bad advice? The whole video was literally him warning you not to go for CS because of money.

Most of them, very correct, but there will be some left. Best thing one can do is to probably change career or make sure they are going to be able to actually amount to something in the competitive field. That means be at least one of the top 5%
I suggest to join TH-cam university to learn CS and dont waste money in college education
