Thank you again Sir, for passing along some good knowledge. I am retired police, and became a fan of the M&P 40 cal, as that was our issue sidearm. I intend to go with a lighter load. I am a fan of Hornandy Critical Duty, but it comes in at 175 grains, so maybe Critical Defense at 165 grains. I have noted 40 cal down to 155 grains. If you have any opinion or suggestions, please let me know. I am purchasing a 10mm for hiking, and camping since I am moving to the mountain west, but will most likely go with a heavy non-hollow point, like Buffalo Bore or Lehigh Defense.
Always love when I come back to your channel every few months. To me 115 always made the most sense out of the 3 main 9mm weights. Less recoil, more velocity. The benefits of low recoil are obvious, and what always made sense to me is that the formula for energy is mass times velocity squared. That velocity is squared means 10-15% more velocity is going to be much more beneficial vs the same increase in mass. Seems like common sense, but of course most of the "experts" favor 124gr, claiming that it's "more substantial" (whatever that means). Once again, it's very validating to have my stubborn armchair logic validated through your real world experience.
Just ordered a bunch of 124 HST. Not plus P because the additional recoil isn't worth the marginal difference in ballistics. I haven't considered 115 JHP but you're making great points as always Abner. Keep at it.
Lower grain moves faster. But certain brands have abnormal behavior in powder charge. I don't jam with Beretta M9, but PMC 115 JHP was the first and only round that stove piped for me. After this, I put a regular Blazer 115 grain range ammo in my pistol and called it a day. Reality is if I unload 5 into the chest, with range ammo in self defense scenario...you won't be so "fiesty" anymore. Hitting someone once will take his will to fight you. Let alone 5. He won't ask if you used JHP or range ammo either

My other option was the 115 grain and therefore I would train with 115 grain. After looking at ballistics gel/"the cloth test" videos and doing some reading, to me, there is not enough of a difference to make me want to switch and its what I've used for years in personal practice. Individual results may vary but for me 115 magtech FMj and gold dot HP fly the same from my full size Walther to my sub compact and even work on my comped performance center shield plus(the newly released one if anyone was curious) those gel tests also don't account for what clothing an attacker could wear, your POA vs POI, and what tissue/bones/organs your rounds will hit and countless other factors. While I didn't a reason to not change my ammo, it's nice hearing a perspective on why someone else uses 115 grain 9mm
