- Weird Autumn from the Night in the Woods Soundtrack, by Alec Holowka.
Finally got a solid take. I'm far from being "good" at the bass but this was a lot of fun to play! I hope to do more covers from this game soon.
My tabs are available on musescore here: musescore.com/...
Gear list: Ibanez Mikro 3/4 scale bass, Fender Mustang amp set to Twin Reverb emulation mode. Audio recorded directly from the Mustang USB converter. Camera is a Samsung Note 9 phone. Gameplay is my own, recorded with Nvidia Shadowplay. Score and Tabs were created with MuseScore. Video edited with Sony Vegas.
I remember watching this 2 years ago trying to learn it. I memorized it and it's my go-to song for warming up. Huge ty for posting tabs! My favorite NITW song ever, and easily my favorite game ever made! Gregg rulz, ok?
im just gonna buy a bass to do this
edit: I GOT A BASS
That's literally what I did.
I'm super tempted too
That's what I did!
@Josiah Mxso Do yourself a favour and get one that's about mid price range, so 300-400$ (Or £ in my case), as usually you can something of guaranteed quality without breaking the bank in that price range.
Christmas has allowed this dream to become reality, Merry Christmas btw
Really good song to learn for beginners. Not too tough at all, wonderful to play along
Mae: I barely remember how to play bass and I don't know the song at all
*Flawlessly improvises with the precision of a professional bass player*
Okay, this IS the best.
And I want to see MORE.
First off this is amazing, brings me back to when I first actually saw the game itself.
Secondly, I don't even own a bass yet I can't get out of the rabbit hole help! In all honesty though, the game itself actually made me want to pick up the bass guitar.
I guess the last thing is, you're underrated, a great creator and well yeah.
P.s. Do you have any tips for new players trying to pick up the instrument?
Oh gosh, I'm certainly flattered. Thanks for the complements! As for advice on getting started... You got to get an instrument in your hands and you have to *play*. doesn't matter what, doesn't matter if it sucks, you have to actually start or it'll never happen.
You'll want an entry-level instrument, something that's good enough to be worth playing but not so expensive you feel guilty about the thing you're supposed to enjoy. The Ibanez I'm playing above is a good example, though the 3/4 scale Mikro is meant for kids / smaller persons. The full size jumpstart kit retails around 250, you can find it cheaper if you go secondhand (saw one today on ebay for 99$). A lot of people who start trying to play give up, so there's always a bunch floating around. Your goal should be to not be another one of them.
You want a practice amp at least, something like a 10W. The Jumpstart kit has one. You don't need anything bigger or better until you get the basics down, for now, it's just important that you can hear what you play. Metronome, tuner, you could buy things like that, but I just use free phone apps. Basic equipment shouldn't be crap, but you don't need The Best. You can upgrade later when you feel limited by the instrument / amp, when you get good enough you can recognize it's flaws. If you feel good enough to perform for an audience, it's probably time to think about upgrading past the beginner equipment.
And you *gotta* play. A lot. You'll need to learn the basics of how the instrument works, of course, and tutorials are invaluable, but the real key is time and effort. That's all talent is: the result of time and applied effort. Not to say that all playing is equally worthwhile. Random doodling and hitting notes without thought or tempo is better than not playing at all, but not by much. it is, thoguh a good way to see how you're improving in a general sense, as over time your random notes start to sound like actual riffs and melodies as you figure out what works and what doesn't. Playing scales over and over is great for your body to learn the act, to build musical fundamentals, but can be boring. Playing songs you love can be fun, but repetitive and doesn't' stretch your skills out. I recommend a mix of all of them. If you play for an hour a day, and split that hour up with some scales to get started, a few runs through favorite songs, learning a new bassline, and then end with randomly playing whatever comes to you.
Here's the thing, if you spend 1 hour a day practicing, you'll be better than me in a year, easy. Make that two, three hours a day? You'll be competent in no time. If you can practice 8 hours a day for a year, you'll be a pro, assuming you force yourself to push the limits of your skills. Time plus applied effort.
@@veiledAutonym certainly not the advice I was expecting, but definitely good advice nonetheless. I'm attempting to go to a physical guitar shop and going to pick up a relatively cheap bass. Although life, money, and the fact I'm still only a high schooler hinders that a bit- but thank you, once I do get one, I'll try to practice as often as possible.
I've been into music for a while, so I'm excited for the opportunity to learn more!
@@proximitychan8816 It's never too late to start. I first picked up a bass at the age of 28! If I have any other advice, it's to find an excuse to play. find a local jam session, or a make a band with your friends, or see if there's a jaz band at your school, anything. Something you can schedule and make a part of your life you aren't supposed to skip. Also, youtube is great for learning a lot of things, when you can't play, read and watch and learn. For theory I recommend the youtube channels of 8-bit music theory, Adam Neely, and 12-tone, but there's TONS of videos on the real basics.
Learning music has been incredibly fulfilling to me, I hope you enjoy the ride.
Well I'm not sure if you remember me or not, but according to TH-cam here, a month ago I told you I wanted to learn bass. So I've decided update time! I actually just got a bass guitar this morning (its 10:58 PM at the time of writing this) and I've gotta say.. my fingers hurt lol. But I love the instrument! Thanks to the power of the internet I've figured out how to play the 7 nation army riff, it's still kinda choppy mind you, but it's a start. I'm excited to learn more.
Now why am I posting this here? Well, it may not seem like it, but your advice really did motivate me to want to learn, the fact that someone actually took time out of their life to help a kid from Missouri get a guitar makes me feel good about the music community uwu
Anywho I suppose that's all I got, all I can say is thanks I suppose. :P
Oh man, that's... thank you! I'm kinda stunned right now, I'm so happy you're going through with it! I make these videos for myself, or sometimes for friends to enjoy... I never considered the possibility that I might end up inspiring someone. Enjoy, and keep pushing my dude. You'll keep learning, even if sometimes it feels like you've hit a wall. You just gotta keep pushing. If you ever get stuck, my advice is to try something different. If learning to cover songs starts to drag, try scales. If scales start to bore you or don't seem to be improving, try improvising over a backing track. Try Jazz licks. Try metal Riffs. Keep an open mind and keep playing, and you'll probably pass my own ability in no time at all!
what a wholesome ending
OH MY GOD I DID IT! I can play the whole bassline now after 5 days of practice!
RIGHT ON! Congratulations!
Love that you did this. Thank you so much. Bought a bass because Mae inspired me. I relate wholeheartedly to her character and always thought it was neat that she played bass (however infrequently). Finally saved up and purchased one today. This is the song I wanted to memorize first~ 💕
No way same! Mae inspired me to become a Bassist.
Thanks for showing the Petagram ❤️
absolutely amazing! trying to learn it rn its very fun to play
Thanks for this!
I’m getting a bass for my birthday and this is the first song I’m learning
This deserves more views
i have the exact same bass this is a sign i must play this
This is awesome
I just wanna say thank you for this cos it really helped me learn this song :D
wow, that’s great!
love this!!
That's amazing
wooooo!!! this is awesome!!! good job
Now I wanna get back into bass for this hhhh
Sweet jams! ❤👌
I wish there were videos of all the songs but the bass is taken out so I can play over them
The songs are in the game files without the bass, but it's a bit of a pain to decode them. I found a guide with some googling that helped. But to be honest, for this video I just opened the game and recorded the bass mini game while not pressing any buttons lol.
Wanted to play bass just to play this, i will try to register my progress here if i remember after a while,
right now i can play it really slowly so lets see how it turns out in a month or so. Will practice everyday.
well how you doing

Some how it sounds better when you play along to it

awesome vid!!! what bass do u use?
Ibanez Mikro short scale bass. It's a pretty decent "budget beginner" level instrument. Probably not the best to start out with unless you're on a tight budget and really want that shorter scale.
Well I was debating getting another guitar or a bass…and it looks like I just got a bass.
I started with guitar too. The crossover is great. Some things carry over but theres a bunch of new techniques to learn. It's been a lot of fun!
@@veiledAutonym Awesome to hear that it won’t be too hard of a transition, and also thanks for inspiring me to play bass.
Song starts at 0:39
tuning? I tried playing it in standard EADG tuning and it sounds wrong, but it might be the difference in amp modes or something. this is really great by the way!!!
The tabs (and my playing) are in standard EADG tuning. I used a mostly clean signal with a bit of reverb. Dunno why it would sound wrong for you... I'm using a 3/4 scale bass so the intonation is a bit different than a normal bass but you wouldn't hear much of a real difference. You can check the musescore link in the description and you should be able to play it in browser to hear the bass line isolated from the backing track.
@@veiledAutonym thank you!! it was because I've never used musescore before and also my tuning app is trash but I figured it out! thank you so much, that is really helpful!
ty I wanna learn bass bc of mae
want to like but its at 666 rn
Con you try to do the others please
I haven't had much time for videos for a while now, but I can promise it's something I want to do. Keep an eye on this channel.
Can you please do one with die anywhere else?? I've been dieing to play it but haven't found any tabs
PLEASE DO PUMPKING HEAD GUY
1:48 the four note isn't high enough, as I hear
Every tab I found online suggests that too, saying it's A-C-A, A-B-A, but I tried and listened to the original song ripped out of the game and I'm 99% sure it's A-C-G, A-B-A. It doesn't sound right, A-C-A sounds better and more "correct", but it's not what's played in game. I think.
Question
I'm a beginning bass/electric player so my question is: is this song easy or hard
It's not really hard, but not 100% dead simple beginner easy. It was a stretch for my fairly novice bass skills, and pushed me further. The musescore link in description can be used to play just the bass line for practice, and has both tabs and sheet music. It's a really solid "walking" bass line which makes it a lot more fun than just playing the root note of the chord for a whole song. This song plays at a mild pace, and doesn't require fast note skills. There's a little bit of syncopation in the bridge, but overall it's a good one to help you get started as a beginner, even if it might take you a bit of work to be able to play it at full speed. Musescore stopped letting people download scores, but if you want, message me and I'll send you the file so you can turn the tempo down, which is how I started practicing this.
What's the tuning?
E Standard
Maes looking kinda different ngl
I assure you I am a total trash mammal.
I can neither see nor hear a difference.
...wait... Was Mae Borowski always white and/or Arabic and/or Irish and/or North Asian and/or South Asian and/or Icelandic and/or Batman in disguise and/or other?
Wait...
MAE'S SHIRT IS RED and/or ORANGE! I can't believe they left such a huge continuity error in the game.
New Challenger Approaches!

Bruh y'gonna tell on me like that I was still using a pick to play back then, I only barely now know how to SLAP
