Its been a dificult week indeed. The US election's result were so dishartening, even as a Canadian. I am trying to stay positive . Sending hugs from Toronto :)
Hi! I haven't read Thérèse Raquin because the teachers had us reading Germinal and L'assommoir instead. So far I've read a few others. I love Zola. It's good to have books to escape reality. Have a nice week! 🌞
Elizabeth, thank you for sharing your thoughts on the US election. I live in California, and I’m devastated! Escaping into books is an excellent idea. Listening to your recent book reads was very comforting. Thank you!
I plan to read comfort books for quite some time too. And brush up on my French since a good friend and I plan to travel to France next fall. I will check out Biblio Maniac. I enjoy books like that.
"Mockery is a secure blanket to suck on when you feel uncertain or confronted by culture or theories that are unfamiliar." --- Bibliomaniac by Robin Ince I''ve added this book to my wish list, it sounds wonderful, and all too familiar. Thanks, Elizabeth. Second best to Steve Donoghue's delightful Pride & Prejudice chapter-by-chapter read-along was your enthusiastic encouragement! Sub-par Pride & Prejudice pastiche? Unleash the velocoraptors!
If you haven't watched the video Robin Ince posted on TH-cam about clearing out his father's books after he died you should, it's wonderful. I need to get that book but I've read him before.
Yes, I live in the US and I also don't understand the election, on what took place. Hopefully we survive, that's all I have to say. I think I had the opposite effect, I am slowly reading my books, only read one book this month, and reading one now. I hope I will pick up the pace.
I'm from a country where this kind of collective crazyness is rather usual, so while I would expect something better from the US, I'm not completely surprised to be honest 😕 On the other hand, the same tendency with gender neutral language tried to become the rule in Spanish, my native language, but it never clicked and I'm not sure if works of literature were written in that way. It may be possible, but people in general don't agree with that fashion, so I don't think they were successful if they existed at all. I have Thérèse Raquin on my TBR. I haven't read any Zola yet, do you think it's a good starting point or should I read something else first? Thank you in advance for any recommendation!
I am so angry and disappointed. I am glad I don't have kids and grandkids who will live in the disaster that will be the U.S. after Trump. Nothing will be done on climate change. Only people who Trump likes will get help with the escalating natural disasters. Democracy was fun while it lasted.
It's been a tough week. I cannot understand it and I'm terrified of what's to come. That being said, I have found some comfort in my books.

Hiding under the bed with a book sounds like a perfectly reasonable response to me. 🌻

Honestly, recently I just wanted to hide myself somewhere and read...and read...and read 🌸

I meant to mention that I found an eBook copy of Therese Raquin and will try (my French is not great) to read it. Thanks for the reference.

I wish I'd thought of reading under the bed. Instead, I started reading Hardy's Woodlanders and I hid out in the forests of Wessex 🙂
