I bowled when there were actually human pinsetters. I was one. I've only seen a pin slide over 2 spots and still stand up 1 time in a hundred thousand games. There is also clear video evidence that the strings affect the pins and your score. Weird that it happened 3 times in one outing. Also, bowling has priced itself out. 5, 6, 7 bucks a game? It's become an expensive sport, but then so is golf. A simple family of 4 outing is an easy $100 at the bowling center. If string pin bowling is going to become the norm, I guess free-fall bowling will go the same was as pinsetters... just a "remember when" we used to do that? Gosh, I sure do miss wooden lanes where no one had a 200 average and the entire bowling alley may only see one 300 game in a season.
Fascinating we've gone from "we need a machine to do this because paying those boys to set up the pins is too expensive" to "we've gotta get rid of those machines because maintaining them is too expensive"
Bowling has been transformed from one of the most challenging sports to master to the farce that it has become today. Just follow the money & the real story will be told.
Just get rid of the machines and make people set their own pins if it's really that expensive
No matter how anyone puts it strings are a whole extra variable as seen in this video...I'll agree that it's more manageable than uncertified pins but not by much imo....I'm glad 220 is covering this topic...and the xfiles theme is amazing

The next level is you roll a ball into an empty backend where a laser tells you the odds of whether you strike or leave pins given your ball speed, rev, rotation, and entry angle. Everything is done digital. Fake pin sounds will be used by speaker that is directed to your center console where the approach is.

holographic pins would be awesome if they can accurately simulate the physics, would be more accurate than string pins for sure

You think that pin sliding over was weird? Years ago, around 2009, I was practicing with my high school bowling team when I threw a ball, and the 7 pin slid over to the 9 pin spot without wobbling OR falling down. Like it was a glass suctioned to a table because of water.
I bowled in the actual USBC string pin testing, and the carry was mostly normal. The one time you’ll really see string weirdness, is when you hit the pins thin and get them going side to side instead of front to back. That 2-8 spare on the lane to the right is the perfect example.
I'd love to hear what you've got going on to get more people involved in bowling! As a high school bowling coach, I'm fighting that same battle.
I coach HS in Louisiana and I think high school bowling IS one of the most important paths. We have been attacking program improvement partially by sheer volume but I am at one of the largest high schools in the state and I have a faculty sponsor and a total of three non-faculty volunteer coaches. In the last three seasons we have run JV teams because the larger schools have wanted it to be more competitive. We had 41 kids tryout this season between the boys and girls teams and we don't cut. We just lay down the reality of what it takes to play. We lose a few every year once they realize it isn't "bowling club" and that it will take effort to start JV and a MUCH greater effort to bowl varsity. I am carrying 18 boys. 2/3 of my starters and 3/4 of my team never bowled youth leagues before trying out for the HS team. We add kids to the future adult league bowler pool every year. The problem is, it is an exhausting path for the coaches who are typically volunteer AND require jobs willing to tolerate the time commitment. You also have to have proprietor support and in some parts of Louisiana that simply isn't there. That said, we have absolutely seen growth, specifically with the top end teams who are running large volumes of new youth through their programs. --- If we are relying on traditional youth programs we are missing a big component. If we are relying on sport leagues, Junior Gold and high $$$ paths, it is even worse. If every school in our region both participated and ran our concept we would double or triple league participation overnight. --- I am OK with string pins provided they are certified and remain separately sanctioned and maybe play with a mixed concept at the HS level. They seem to introduce an aspect of luck I am uncomfortable with at the highest levels of competition. That said, I would love to see 8-16 lane houses in small towns again and if this is how we fill that gap then so be it. Yes, cheaper freefall pinsetters would be ideal --- but we need places for people to bowl in the gaps. The BIGGEST deterrent to HS bowling in Louisiana is a lack of houses outside the 5 largest cities to cover our large rural schools.
Your so lucky to have high school bowling. My high school was maybe 2 blocks from a nice 24 lane bowling alley back in the 70-80s and no bowling program for us.@@weunice
Back in high school, I was on a weekend youth league, and I noticed how few people were coming in the season, we even had to reduce the number of members per team. I took the liberty to make a flyer for the head coach to pass around and for the bowling alley to have at the front desk. Parents start to light up when they find out that their kids can win scholarship money when bowling.
Cost isn't really the main issue. Good used pinsetter parts are widely available. The issue is finding skilled pinsetter mechanics. The older guys are retiring and there's no one to fill their shoes. Proprietors switch to string machines for two reasons. In the long run they're cheaper to maintain. Secondly, finding mechanics. I'm a head mechanic at a center with Brunswick A2's. I'm treated like gold because my proprietor knows finding someone to replace me would be very difficult or VERY expensive. LOL
Kinda obvious but I HATE string pin machines. Could possibly ruin my career in the future. Already has screwed me out of service work and good extra money.

Not sure if you can make a cheaper free fall pin machine. With so much mechanics involved in those machines they take a lot of beating with gears and bearings and metal moving around. Those bunch of weighted pins need heavy duty machines. Can't expect all that movement to be done with plastic gears, plastic motors, plastic pin setters. Much easier and now cheaper to just transition to strings where any kid who can come off the street and operate a computer to run a string pin operation. Can't imagine a line of folks learning the mechanics of free fall pin machines even if they could invent a cheaper free fall pin machine which would still need a learned mechanic to fix when needed.

A pin sliding side way standing up is very common in some bowling centers with mechanical pinsetters. I think when the pin deck is oily and not cleaned properly, pins will slide side way like skating.

Those strings look a little loose, but 5:00 where the 8 pin slide over, I have done that with freefall pins on more than one occassion. Thanks 220 for doing your part to educate us on string pins. Suggestion for a less mechanically maintained ball return system would be for the balls to return along the top of the lane than underneath.
I’ve actually seen a bowling alley with an old ball return system where the balls returned through a third gutter in the center, and just kinda went up into the rack at the end on their own momentum. That place was so old that there was a person in the back operating the pinsetters.
Yes most have seen it , but we have had these string pins for a year and I can tell you absolutely the strings have on many occasion kept a pin from falling. They provide stability. The entire alley is down about 10 pins in average and it marks the first year no one complained about how the lanes were oiled LOL

Ok, so as for the cheap free fall pinsetters. Heres the thing. Even If they managed to make cheaper free fall machines they would be no where near as cheap as string lin still. I mean, we got a our Brunswick GSX's for $30,000 and installation was another $15,000 Per lane. Meanwhile my guys who work at a center that just switched to string pin spent around $1,700 per lane. Even if the cost of free fall was to be split in half it would still be insanely expensive in comparison to free fall. Ive never worked on amf pinsetters so i cant speak for the 82-70, 82-90, or the edge
Its called get rid of bowlero. They make the sport to expensive. Drives people away from the sport. The smaller family owned centers are doing way better than the bowlero in my area. Prices are 2 to 3 bucks a game while bowlero is 7 to 10. Just ridiculous

I completely agree with you. Plastic pins or strings….it just nerfs bowling. It’s a lazy way to address the problem. The problem is there’s not enough people supporting bowling. You guys, all the amazing bowling content creators out here, are doing more for the sport than the PBA or USBC right now. They need to find a way to tap into your talent, passion, and fanbase right now.
Part of the problem is all the rules changes in the last few years. Bowling was definitely seeing an uptick after the pandemic ended, but anyone that got into the game semi-seriously has been met with nothing but constant changes the last few years.
A cost-cutting race to the bottom is never a sustainable solution to any problem. Generally speaking, it's just doubling down on the root cause of the problem in the first place and will only accelerate the decline. When I talk to people about the fact that I bowl, I'll usually hear how many bowling alleys are dirty, broken down, and not maintained. If you don't invest in the upkeep of the business to cut costs, you get a reputation of being run down, and you get less business, which drives you to keep cutting costs, further hurting your reputation. It's a death spiral. My local center, however, is family-owned, and they have five centers in the region. They're constantly reinvesting into the business, and they're thriving; it's a positive feedback loop. Heck, they don't even serve alcohol so it truly is all driven by the bowling.
Great points highlighted, but I'd like to point out a regularly overlooked on. Some certified bowlers' local center is changing to strings and they don't have the ability to travel to a free fall center. Should those bowlers be excluded from certified competition just because they're bowling on very similar, yet slightly different pin setters?! No one expects the USBC to push the string pin setters on anyone. They're just offering a certified option in a worst-case-scenario for those bowlers so that they can still be certified bowlers. But the best point you make is that WE NEED SOMEONE TO IMPROVE THE FREE FALL TECH! Strings are the lazy answer to a question no one was asking.

I play stringpins every day in my bowling alley, it ain't that bad. Yes I have less messenger, but in general, if I shoot in the pocket I'll get mostly the same results as if I wasn't playing stringpins.
basically what i said in the last video, i don't agree with them being in competitions but have no problem with bowling alleys using them to keep cost down. the bowling alley near me has both with the string pins being $1 a game and the normal lanes being $5 a game. to me they are close enough for casual games and for the cost difference it is really a no brainer
We are lucky to have string bowling, and hopefully, it will be certified. If it wasn't for string bowling, many bowling alleys would have closed. To those who are closed-minded, wait till they close your alley down cause you refuse to bowl with strings. If it wasn't for string (labor cost is cut way back). The doors would close. They raised prices too because of the cost to run these alleys. The die hards can have virtual bowling. As a senior, I'm glad my alley is still open, so I can actually go there and bowl in leagues and tournaments, plus see all my friends in person. Age is a big factor for alleys to stay open as not many of the younger generation will take up this sport. My opinion.

And if the pin decks were slick don’t you think that would’ve helped them actually fall off the deck than? Cmon use youre head it’s obvious the strings had and have an effect on pin fall and pin carry. There is no logical reason for string pins in bowling other than recreational use.
@@petefreezybowling Yes never, because my house does a pretty good job on the pin decks but did have it happen twice to me in one 3 game set and once to a team mate just two weeks ago. That's what happens when they don't get cleaned for a while and covered in carrydown. The pins slide instead of falling over.

As of last month, there were less than 5 certified string pin centers in the country. Chances are most center have not yet changed their string lengths and or requested certification, just FYI. Maybe your center was but not sure.
Call usbc for the location of certified centers.

I believe string bowling has its place for children or just for fun, not in mainstream competition type bowling. When you add strings to the pins, i believe it takes away the purity of the game. For centers that are closing down, you also have to look at the location of those centers. Are they in a good part of town or a declining part of town. That will have a lot to do with whether people want to go there to bowl. Those centers need to look at upgrading their building/equipment. I have a relative that bowls in a center that has a declining neighborhood and the center does not want to put in the money to revamp their equipment or center. So their league is moving to another center that has upgraded. Great video 220, always enjoy your content. Would love to hear your ideas for bringing people into the game.
The pin deck could have had a lot of carried down oil on it causing some of the sliding pins.
In the UK, stringpins are everywhere. Some are certified and most are just recreational.
I don't live in the UK, but when I was traveling, I went to 4 different bowling alleys; 3 stringpins and 1 free-fall. All the stringpins bowling alleys are different, which two of them are certified and the others are not. Certified stringpins have oiled lanes and well maintained. Whereas recreational stringpins are dry af and rental shoes aren't always provided. The free-fall bowling alley that I went to is what we all love and know.
At first, I thought bowling had gone to stringpins in the UK, but after having different experiences and a bit of research, bowling alleys have been separated into certified (can host tournaments) and recreational. It is best to google first before walking into a bowling alley and having to find out it's not what you expected it to be.
Stringpin and Certified should never be in a sentence together.
the sliding pins you had were caused by excessive oil on the pin deck which can be rectified by either cleaning them or putting less oil on the lanes...with a freefall machine with automatic scoring, it would have scored correctly and the machine would either have picked up the pin where it stood or stopped for an out-of-range cycle...I've been having this happen for my last 35 years as a pinsetter mechanic and as a bowler I moved the 6 pin to the 7 pin spot almost 40 years ago...
the washout trip could have gone either way with a freefall pinsetter since it looked as if the top of the head pin could have taken out the 10 from behind but to close to call.
If there's A LOT of oil on the pin deck, you will get the "slide and stand" with freefall. We used to get it at our local freefall center. It eventually got bad enough that they needed to make modifications to prevent it.
Stripping the pin decks, especially the phenolic coated pin decks, on a weekly, if not daily basis, is simply sensible routine maintenance. However, some pins will still slide laterally if struck precisely at or near the center of gravity of the pin. Strings interfere with the dynamics of free falling pins. This has been demonstrated time & time again! Strings will ruin what miniscule integrity remains in bowling. The sport will be no more & become a recreational arcade game in family fun centers with no sport value whatsoever! This appears to be what the powers want it to be. Fine, just count me out!
Here in Denmark we have had string bowling, for a few years at least in my centre.
And to be honest, sometimes I can play a whole game (6 series) without anything happening, other times they come in sections.
Besides that you have to hit the pocket much more accurately with string bowling than without I used to do a lot of strikes by hitting thin now it has to sit flush everytime otherwise it dosnt give a strike.

In Malta, we have a monopoly where the whole bowling community rents lanes from a private entity. They naturally charge a lot more than any bowling centre does abroad. They're switching to string pins because it's cheaper to manage, which fair enough for them, they opened the centre to make money, not to promote the sport. But that's the thing, our sport is dying with the excuse that string pins are sanctioned. The whole bowling community in Malta is forced to switch to strings. We are currently on shut down until our national association conjures an agreement with a hotel for hobby lanes that don't even have the certified length. We head to a sanctioned string-pin centre in minimum 5 months because no-one gives a shit, not even the government. If I ever win anything on string-pins, I'll denounce my victory because this pin action delegitimizes the concept of fair competition. Fuck string pins.
The pins sliding on the deck are because the decks aren’t clean. I’ve had it happen more times than I care to remember
The sliding pin is not a string phenomenon alone. I had 3 of them during my practice at a house with 50+ yr old A2s tonight. I will say my main concern with these machines involves maintenance. Specifically what will happen as the pins get a lot of games on them. Most decent houses rotate their pins every few months. With these "maintenance free" machines, I can see that not happening.
4:55. This literally just happened to me today with regular pins.
The 7 pin somehow slid to be in line with the 5 pin. I was very surprised. The machine marked it as a 9, and the machine came down and bonked it over. Ahah
I watched this video a few days ago and was astonished that it resembled this shot.
Napa is not certified to the latest standard. League bowlers at Napa have a separate section in their USBC profile for a string pin average which was the initial certification of "legal but not equal to freefall".
This is easy to verify by looking at League Secretary and cross referencing any number of bowlers in yhe USBC site.

Appreciated your final comment. With technology as far advanced as it is now, it would seem logical that far more inexpensive automatic free fall pinsetters could be designed & mass produced that utilizes less parts & are electrically affordable. This could dispel strings & assist in preserving bowling's future.

There must be a way to make free fall cheaper. but corporate business will always go for the cheapest most profitable solution to them.
I'm on my way to being a 200 ave bowler and had a chance to bowl at a brand new entertainment center with strings. You still have to hit your mark and throw good shots. There were some spares that would not have happened with free fall but it was a small number. Those weird pin slides at 6:45 of your video are wild.
I prefer freefall but will bowl no matter what is available. Your strikes looked, sounded, and acted like strikes. Great video and content is always fun to watch! Keep growing the game!!

@@StephensAmazingTH-camHandle I understand that and agree. However there were no pile ups, pin setting malfunctions, or ball return issues either. Technology will improve over time like everything else in this world. If opposed then bring back human pin setters like at the Holler House. I watched a high end competition recently between the US and the World and that pinboy was better than any machine.
@@DavidRodriguez-mp9nh it’s not improvement to knock pins over that shouldn’t be getting knocked over. It’s not an improvement for bowling for splits to be easier to convert. Packy and Brent made the 7-10 almost at will on strings. It’s also not an improvement for strings to prevent a spare being made. Strings are a step back, not forward for the game
@@StephensAmazingTH-camHandle Go play a few games on a string set if you have not yet. As I stated prior I have and I'm not a fan of them. I prefer free fall. However if this is what the bowling industry is moving toward it won't keep me from playing the game I love. Have fun!
I can see string pins having their place especially with families with young kids. One thing the powers at be don't want to do is piss off the people that currently are bowling on the regular/leagues/tournaments. I am with you and think they can come up with a better and safer way to set the pins without going back to 1960s technology .

Bowlero only pays $17 an hour for mechanics, in areas where 1 bedrooms are $2800 a month.@@Nick_J_ Not that this is bowlero but mechanics should get a living wage and not make the same rate as the kid at the front desk.

Bowlero continues to purchase bowling centers and they don't like competitive bowling because the margins are less than open play. I just wonder when the equipment manufacturers are going to make themselves heard because they are the ones who lose when competitive bowling disappears.
@@AverageLeagueHack League has historically been more profitable than open play because leagues purchase more beer on average, and beer is where the money is. But league play demands conditions not be objectively ridiculous so you have to keep the place up instead of letting it degrade. If you're Bowlero and are just trying to juice the next quarter's stock price then it's better to forego the maint requirements even though you lose long term.
Dude the last point you made about todays technology was spot on. I asked my local house about fixing the machines and they are like “they are so complicated and very difficult!!”. Im sorry but I think any engineer or skilled mechanic could study these machines and be able to not only service them, but also make them more efficient. I fail to believe that we exhausted all options.
Or is it the fault of the big companies who make these machines? I have a feeling that they have some proprietary equipment that they wont teach people about. So these houses have to spend crazy money to have some special mechanic drive from hours away to fix a machine. Either way its BS
Been a pinsetter mechanic for 12 years now. AMF 82-70s. They are very complicated and very temperamental. Its not that its impossible, its just becoming less and less economically viable to keep up with them. Particularly on older machines, which many centers have, is constant upkeep. People tend to think of machine maintenance in terms of a single lane or a pair. Keeping a pair of lanes running well isnt all that difficult. Keeping 40, like our center has, running well is another task entirely. Its very possible to upgrade machines to make them run smoother/more reliably, but generally by the time you get through the labor and parts cost, you might as well go to strings. Bowling is, at the end of the day, a business and if a business doesnt turn a profit, it closes its doors. Thats where strings are very appealing to businesses, theyre very cheap and reliable compared to free fall. Not only in the initial cost and the maintenance cost, but even the amount of power to run them is significantly less. On top of all that, open play is generally more profitable than league play, and quite frankly, league bowlers are a pain in the ass. So theres huge incentive to go toward string pins and favor open play from a business perspective. In my opinion I would love to see a middle ground of more efficient and reliable free fall pinsetter designs with newer tech, but the incentive for development is just not there.
Short version: Its not that it isnt possible, its just the economics of strings vs free fall heavily favors strings.

@@coopergates9680 they were not certified until recently. Even if a centers focus was shifting toward open play most centers would not be willing to adopt something that isnt usbc certified.

Yes I totally agree with you as a bowler here in Australia I don't like string pins I've tried them I don't like to carry I was brought up the old fashioned way if you want to string pin send it in your own house though I've got nothing against it but for tournament wise I would rather just let it stick the way it is
That first shot is all we needed to see, but then relatively quickly we see strings knocking down pins. If these are certified, they're proof that this is a bad idea.

I get it why bowling centers need string bowling. It keeps them open. They need the savings that string bowling gives them in maintenance costs, and not needing mechanics to fix broken machines. I am against string pins due to their unnatural reaction to ball interaction. BUT it's the future to keep bowling centers open and to prosper. I guess better to still have centers open we can bowl on even with strings then not to bowl because our local bowling center has closed due to being unprofitable.
I tested them at the USBC in Arlington for roughly an hour. My honest impression was that it wasn’t as bad as everyone was saying it’s gonna be. But I’ve also bowled with some awful pinsetters and have seen pins just slide over with normal free fall pins plenty. String interference can happen of course and I can almost envision the arguments and fights it would cause. You might need a camera and replay button which isn’t really a bad idea. But yeah I think there’s gotta be a way to make free fall pinsetters better, cheaper, and more reliable.
From my understanding, much of the complexity of conventional pinsetters is a result of their having to pick up pins that might be somewhat removed from their normal spot. What would you think of a game which was like "standard" bowling except that between balls the mechanism would replace pins with pins that were normally spotted? In terms of operation, scan the pins, sweep everything, place a full rack, and use actuators so that when the rack lifts it would take with it any pins that had been knocked over before. I would expect that such a mechanism could be as fast or faster than a conventional mechanism since the rack could have a full set of pins ready to place before the first ball arrives, and wouldn't need to spend time lifting pins before sweeping.
Although such a mechanism wouldn't always leave bowlers with precisely the same arrangement of pins as a conventional pinsetter, the effects on the game would be minuscule compared with the effects of string pins. What would you think of that as a style of mechanism?
As someone who installs bowling machines, people are switching to string machine not necessarily because bowling is declining but because its incredibly expensive to replace parts on free fall machines. Also if someone happens to your head mechanic more than likely most centers don't have a reliable B mechanic to take their place and so the machines start running horribly. So string machines cost less and need a whole lot less maintenance. And a whole lot less calls. Keeping lanes more ready to use and not breaking bank just for parts.
No one wants to train a mechanic or pay what they're worth.
So the Qubica machines can run in open play mode and USBC mode what setting was the machine on ?

I don't think it is caused by the strings, but instead by the shape of the bottom of the pins being too flat and not enough friction on the pin deck.
Most the time pins sliding is caused for planks not being cleaned. Maybe a little leftover cleaner/oil on there from the lane machine

How are you liking that Summit? Some strange stuffs going on over there. I think the thing that would bother me most if my alley went to strings would be the lack of ambient noise from the setters. Strings wont make a difference in my game 180avg lol
In order to draw more competitors into the lanes, bowling centers need to _"evangelize and proselytize"_ more by sponsoring tournaments with cash prizes among the largest companies with 30 or more employees, within 25 mile of the their lanes. It's the challenge of competition which is going to bring in more casual bowlers.
From the small amount of footage I’ve seen on certified strings, I’ve noticed that the carry is poop. You have to go high flush just to carry strikes.
The day my home center puts in string pins, is the day I hang it up. If I want to go arcade bowling, I'll find an arcade.
In the league, I had 3 pins slide and stay up in one night. The first two were during the 10 minutes of practice.
You can get that pin slide effect if they don’t clean the deck and it gets oil back there but it isn’t a thing that should happen
As an ol timer, I'm not a fan...but if it helps the sport and keeps the independent centers open then I'll reluctantly support strings. But I'll drop league, pick up pickle ball instead like the other "blue hairs" and only bowl a few times a year (kids bday) because it's now a carnival game.

@@timanders3151 I even argued with Luke a few times. He said that the pinsetters he bowled on were GS-X Free Fall Pinsetters and they were crap. This guy pretty much never worked as a pinsetter mechanic in his entire life, learn to fix the problem its not like the end of the world. I’ve been in and out of pinsetters and its fun to fix them and he doesn’t know that every Bowling Center has different state conditions where one center is more maintained than the other. My local center had AMF 82-90XL Pinspotters and they were breaking everyday due to poor maintenance but when I went on a vacation to somewhere else and bowled at 4 Bowling Centers (2 centers with AMF 82-70’s and 2 more centers with Brunswick GS-X), I find that those centers are more maintained than the one in my hometown
The house I bowl in has sliding pins often. It's not just string pin. String pin, candle stick pin, duck pin, conventional pin, they are not supposed to be exactly alike. I think different types are good. It's not for everyone.
My plan to make bowling even more popular is have Bikini Bowling Leagues.

I think it's a people problem, and not necessarily a technology-driven solution, that's gonna "save" bowling as a national past-time. Strings may help keep costs down, which means more centers can open in more places, but I think word of mouth, friends taking friends bowling, and most importantly the current generation doing what they can to get the NEXT generation interested in bowling as a hobby and sport is going to be what keeps it going.
There's a lot of options out there for activities these days, even if bowling gets a smaller slice of that pie I think it's in good hands right now, and string setters are going to get more new business owners interested in owning alleys or adding lanes to venues. This video was a great display of a full game on certified strings, thanks for sharing it!

I mean it's so obvious regardless of what length the strings are, they are a FACTOR that changes the results of a shot when compared to freefall. For better or for worse, you see both of this in the video with shots that would've definitely struck on free fall or shots where pins were clearly getting knocked down strictly because of the string. Ultimately I believe string pins shouldn't be part of competitive play as it lessens the repercussions for a bad shot, multipin spares/splits are clearly easier to make thanks to the string being an additional factor not requiring direct contact to knock over. I also feel like this give an additional advantage to power players who already tend to have a leg up in today's competitive field.
String pins are an absolute joke and hurt a game already suffering from image problems. With all the advances in technology tell me why pinsetter manufacturers can't develop freefall pinsetters that are a lot more cost-effective and require less maintenance?! It would be great to take some video of string pins in action from the pin deck so we can see the effect of the strings up close.

I'm fascinated. It IS a lot more normal. The weird leaves sometimes happen on free-fall setters when there's a buttload of open play carrydown. I'm wondering why the strings themselves have to be SO big and thick.
Material, durability, repeatability, and reducing tangles. If you haven't, take the time and read the full study by the USBC. There's some crazy stuff in there to get to a product that makes it fair as possible for certification.

Those strings seem a little tight compared to others but the computer is doing its job and keeping score correctly. Pins that move away from their original position are counted as fallen, even if they're still standing.
I think certified strings are good for training facilities. I don't know that I would want to bowl on them in a tournament. Could you imagine a 550+ Rev Monster on strings? I am a HS coach and I only want the game to continue to get stronger and more popular among young people. I would love to hear your ideas as I have some of my own that I am trying to figure out. I live in Maryland and we still don't have a HS State bowling championship.

Our bowlero bowling alley is closed more than it's open. Only open if we are bowling league. They are making good money.
The technology is great for smaller locations or places that otherwise may not be able to afford to maintain or service a free pin machine. But if a place can afford it, no reason to use strings
Lanes with certified strings is all I have to bowl on in my area. Now I’m absolutely terrible at bowling so to me it probably doesn’t matter. But the amount of times I think it should have struck but 1 pin stays up I’m now thinking it’s cause of the strings
I think part of it is the cost to bowl. I hadn't bowled much the last few years because I thought it was crazy to pay 4-5 bucks a game on a weekday to bowl or 35-45 an hour on a weekend. I got on a league this year after 20 years went to practice and the lanes were so burnt I felt like I wasted my time and money. Just oil the lanes and lower the price and bowlers will come back. My center charges 13 an hour during the week but per person. I go by myself it's 13 bucks I can get 6 games in. I go with someone else it's 26 bucks for an hour and you will get 2 to 3 games each in. If it's by the hour it should be by the lane not person.
No quartermania or "all you can bowl" special? Even the quartermania offered near here keeps upping its cover charge

I wouldn't be surprised if strings do result in more of those sliders you had but it should not have happened that much. Free fall will absolutely do that too if they don't prep the pin decks properly. I suspect that's the problem here too, not the strings.
