Foreigners will experience lots of cultural shocks wen they visit nepal but those things will make Nepal the most unique place ever. And im sure, in the end; wen u pack ur bags and ready for take off to ur home country, Nepal will still remain in ur heart for the rest of ur life. Such a place is "Nepal"
I loved everything about Nepal! The squatty potties, eating with hands, even the hard beds... in fact I had to sleep on the floor for a month when I got back before getting used to my old mattress! ✌️❤️ and Namaste you two
12:49 #13 In Nepal, the week starts with sunday so, no holiday on sundays for students. Friday is a 'half day' so, schools and offices close early and Saturday is a holiday.
Yes some homes still have flat toilets but in more advanced residential areas most homes have commodes and toilet papers, its not like no one has toilet paper and you still have the option to eat your meal with a spoon. Everythings optional. You guys were cooking outside in firewood but if you had gas it would be much easier and the electric rice cooker is super easy . Many homes have electric cooking stuff. You guys are struggling a bit cause it looks like you are in a very basic home. And to cut noise, you can move to places that are much peaceful there are places like that such as Kapan, Lalitpur, Narayanthan, Tokha etc. all i meant is there are options. Dont adjust and compromise a lot if you dont have its habits. Thanks for visiting our country though.
Very well said....but I guess they r talking about the most common , general and daily way of living for most of the people in Nepal . I don't think they think they are struggling even a bit , but adapting to how we have live through decades , it's all about knowing places and cultures while knowing and preparing for daily life activities for a smooth run .. let us not divert their msg saying option is there or what so ever , but appreciate there work and dedication towards our country and their effort to adapt with us ..
thanks for the input! however i liked the video because i never imagined such things! i mean flat toilets don't exist here, anywhere, and it's the first time i see one tbh
It's very good to hear that there are Western-style toilets as I’d love to visit Nepal, but I have both bad knees & lower back & it is completely impossible for me to squat!... Thank you. ❤️
I've been to Nepal... and I didn't prepare any of those things. But I still had a blast. I would do a better next time though.. thanks for your videos.. I'm inspired.
gubgib sumontip yeah its safe..u dnt hve to take worry BT I would like to recommend to go with many friends...more friends more fun nd memorial journey..
Many people will be watching this as tourists and will probably end up staying in hotels - many of which have western toilets. Also toilet paper isn't really hard to find in Nepal!
It's not a hotel ....you will definatly find western toilet in Nepal I am sure ....but guys are spending the time as villagers ...so if you stay in a good hotel you will find all facilities
No frequent power cuts in 2020, you can buy innerspring and foam mattresses in furniture shops, cutlery is available virtually everywhere and you can buy toilet paper at most shops at affordable prices. (But a lot of the toilets are squat).
1: you can ask spoon if u feel awkward to eat with hand. 2: the hotel u have stayed was pretty below standard coz everyone uses matrix these days. 3. The food u ate was not good. It was so simple food might be $1 per plate. You can't expect 5 star rank for $1 food.
NO they wont mind if you are a lefty. There are lots of people who are lefty like you. Well you can use spoon and fork.So no need to use your right hand.
Sonam Sherpa when I was trekking along the Annapurna circuit my toilet roll was useless due to rain. But I managed to to wipe with some leaves, at that time I felt really close to the nature. 🙏 Om Shanti🙏
Sorry guys I don't totally agree with you. Everything is available in Nepal if you have money. And in a small amount of money if you want a perfect service or good things then sorry not only in Nepal wherever you go you have to face Same problem.
Nowadays, there is no Loadshedding meaning there no electricity cut, and other thing is if you live in good hotel you can sleep on the cosy mattress....
Half of the things you said is only true in Hetauda. A small town. Nepal is a very very diverse country. Even a Nepali born in a certain town would feel an outsider in another Nepali town. That s how different their cultures are within the same country. But as long as you re a tourist there, they won't mind even if you do some weird stuff.
This is so true. Even with the festivals, one person living in the town will celebrate it and the next person couldn't even tell you why it's celebrated. That's one of the things I love about Nepal. Everything is mostly what I love about Nepal.
Thank you so much didi & daju (older sister & older brother)...your video is very useful..since lm coming to nepal on 14th march 2016 & willl be travel female solo traveller (from Brunei Darussalam)....alot of my friends nepali who work in Brunei always inform me to be prepare about shortage of electricity, noise pollution and clean water..
+nurul rani Hey Nurul bahini, we've never known anyone from Brunei, thanks for commenting, glad it was useful. Your Nepali friends have prepared you well for Nepal, especially Kathmandu where those things are the biggest problems. Have an awesome time in Nepal in less than a month!
+The Ticket to Travel some of the Burmese are Nepalese people who migrated for work in military and so on .. You will find people who still claim to be nepali Burmese and people who have settled down for good there , that means most of them don't even speak the language . They dress and look like Nepalese though . Thought I would just throw it out there . A little general knowledge .
Update: There ins't load shedding anymore in Nepal. Also, when using squatting pan, try putting your feet flat on the ground, that way it's more comfortable. You don't need to balance on your toe tips like a ballet dancer.
I appreciated the video. Like some comments below, probably most visitors to the cities will stay in well equipped hotels. It is good to know what you said, so when you are traveling in the countryside, you will know what to expect. I am headed back to Kathmandu in a month for the third time. The last time I visited was six months before the devastating earthquake. I happened to sit next to the greatest Nepalese person, a local professor and consultant. I was invited to his home and celebrated the main Nepalese holiday. Since then, we have kept up on Skype and Facebook. I did get to see most of the well known heritage sites and basically just went with the flow for a week. I would recommend visiting if you can; don't worry about anything, it seems to be a very safe place the people are nice. For that matter you should always respect every person in every country you visit, they are trying hard to make it and you already made it.
This is so great. Emma is prepared to come to Nepal. I am so happy to have a video to give our families all a visual of what we are talking about with squat potties etc. And this proves that we aren't making it all up!!!
visiting Nepal would give u many exceptional experiences and of course the daily life might not be similar to of the places u belong but it will surely give u some wonderful memories and i can bet on that
I am from Nepal and Each and every point is absolutely correct and people who are planning to visit Nepal will be helped to prepare themselves considering those facts.
I really enjoy your videos. They are very informative and interesting. You have a unique point of view and a very down to earth style. Keep up the good work!
I like your traffic tips. One of the most dangerous things for tourists is when they step out of a bus and a motorcycle is cutting around traffic and hits them. We just started promoting our TH-cam channel of tips for Nepal. Hope you guys come back again.
Remove one thing from your list which is "Power cut". This problem is fixed almost entirely depending upon where you wanna be. If you plan to travel in a remote part than yes have some back up plan or else there is no issue anymore.
excellent video,, we will be in kathmandu next week arriving 24th march'18...for 6 days(inc chitwan) cant wait , then fly onto kolkata-varanasi-jhansi-agra-jaipur -udaipur etc 24days trip
Most tourists get shocked with Nepal's cultures for a first visit, but me..l love Nepal's culture very much..I will visit Nepal again for second time next year ...

My wife and I are going to Nepal to do the Annapurna circuit in September. Great video, although after you described the situation at 3:38, I couldn't but help stare at your hands for the remainder of the video ;)
Cold we can cope no problem , just need the right and proper gear , went up to 5400 meters and i had no issues . Regarding the squat toilet ,its something to get used to and my experience is the more you eat like the locals ( dhal bat ) and no fancy food ( basically trying to eat what you eat at home ) the less time you will spend in a squat position. You dont have to use your hands , cutlery are available.
Your number 10 is about voltage (220 versus 110). There is another factor which can cause problems in certain devices. If you have motorized equipment like a blender it will not work properly because of the cycles per second. In the west we use 50 cycles wheres in India, Nepal they use 60 cycles.
i had french tenant who could never accept the noise part. he use to wake up at 9 or so and every time we made noise he use to madly scream at us showing his bad temperament.
This is probaly a strange question, but do I have to consider the different calendar, when booking a room, or saying to someone, that I'll come at a particular date?
can i ask u a question? don't u lick your fingers after eating anything which needs your fingers to pick rather than spoons? same goes here in nepalese people after u finish ur dish.
You don't have to eat with your hand , most restaurants give spoons along with your order , if they don't you can always ask for it . And it doesn't really matter what hand you eat with , no one will bother you if you eat it with either hand.
Well, a rather pleasant update for all who want to travel to Nepal. We hardly have those powercuts (power outages/loadsheddings) anymore. So yay us! :D
Im going to Nepal in 10 days, just a quick question. How is the internet there? No im not going there to play online games or watch movies, its more for information and navigation, thanks!
Internet services available have gotten really great although unfortunately hotels may be overloaded for the plan they’re using, but I don’t think you will be worse off than many other places. Data also is good. You will be able to navigate and google just fine, although if you are trekking, than there is next to no internet, but who does that while hiking anyways?
Thanks for the quick reply. Sounds good! While trekking it can be usefull, incase i accidently burn my physical map trying to make a fire in the jungle hehe. No but my plan is to go outside the trek areas, where no tourists go, or people overall. Following a road thats 100cm wide might be nice with the scenery and views but its not me, i like to go where few have gone before. Explore new places with a road that you have to make your self. I guess i just have to not burn my map up then ;)
I have two questions. First, I'm left-handed. I think I know the answer to this, but are there any concessions made at all for lefties, even for writing or using utensils? Also, for personal hygiene, I know in South Korea (where I currently live), most places have trash cans beside the toilets for used toilet paper because of delicate plumbing and septic systems. If I were to use my own toilet paper or moist towelettes, would I be able to flush them or are there receptacles in Nepal similar to Korea?
There are toilet paper easily available anywhere in Nepal and yes u can throw it in the toilets where there are flush system and if there isn't any flush then just throw it in dustbins. In addition, it isn't necessary to hide your left hand or sth like that. Even in Nepal there are lots of lefties people. There are spoons available in markets, restaurants, hotel. This video is a little exaggerated.
OF course you can throw toilet papers but make sure you flush them properly. And dont worry about you being Left-handed. Better use spoon and fork before eating cuz i do the same thing.
I know I'll annoy someone but I sleep on a buton/futon (cotton stuffed mat) or a hammock anyways, and I have no hesitation about whipping out my spork to eat (don't judge me). Pretty much everything else doesn't bother me at all except the toilet paper. I have a folding solar panel because it's easier to deal with where I live anyway same goes for my breakdown Wood gas stove (I'm sure that's useful in Nepal) and squatting to use the bathroom is fairly common in most countries anyway. 5am is not early at all by the way.
Update for 2021: 1)The everyday power cut no longer exists but foreigners can carry torch as occasional power cuts might happen due to Nepal's land form and climate. 2)Talking about toilet it is not compulsory to wipe with water and hand as toilet papers are common and cheap also. But trekkers and back packers must be ready to do that or carry enough toilet papers for your particular tour/trek. 3)As mentioned in video never eat with your left hand cause it is used for wiping purpose only. 4)Girls holding hands is common but boys holding hands is not that common as mentioned in the video. Although its just about the friendship and brotherhood it isn't common in all parts of Nepal or among majority people. Checkout ExperienceNepal2020 in instagram for free tips and cheap tours in Nepal
I’ve been traveling to NEPAL for a very long time and I admire what you have chosen to do. Actually live in a neighborhood. Adaptation of course takes a while. Somethings are easy others take time. I’ve lived in countries both Middle East Europe and Asia where I now live permanently. Your video was very clear to the point and simple. I really like that. I’m interested that you had no Hindu vs non hindu issues or perhaps you did. The toilet issue is well solved with the water jet if it’s available and much cleaner. Thank you.
So how did you found Nepal. Well, you can visit to Kathmandu , Bhaktapur or other great places of Nepal. You will enjoy there and havd lots oc fun and can get many facilities over there. By the ways I also liked your video.☺😊
We don't need adaptor..We use blander, blow dryer , iron etc...It may be because u didn't stay at good place and from india it is difference is of 15min if we talk about timezone
Guys next time again when you will visit to Nepal, just get some more money and u shouldn't face any problems which u r showing in this video, just we should know that we will get facilities according to how we invest.
If you wanna feel Nepal need to go to village area but if you wanna live with lots of facilities it’s good to go city area. I love village with purest air, morning bird sounds.
well it totally depends on where you are staying at, if you are staying in nice hotels like in pokhara you wont have to worry about such stuffs where as if you stay in more economical places these 15 things are to be known.
Foreigners will experience lots of cultural shocks wen they visit nepal but those things will make Nepal the most unique place ever. +nyima gurung Well said!
Yes. Nepal has remained in my heart forever. It was the 1st FAR east country in which I visited. The Annapurna trail was amazing, as were the people.
azumi sai ho
Really helpful thanks a loot
Because of those factors I actually don't like it that much
No power cuts anymore thank God!
I loved everything about Nepal! The squatty potties, eating with hands, even the hard beds... in fact I had to sleep on the floor for a month when I got back before getting used to my old mattress! ✌️❤️ and Namaste you two

Toilet paper is available in nepal .
Guys toilet paper is cheap in Nepal Like 20-50cent according to quality and we use the same two pin sockets to all devices that we use

Correct !
Absolutely right
I'm screwed. I'm left handed and not sure I could adapt to using my right. I've always eaten and write left handed.
NO they wont mind if you are a lefty. There are lots of people who are lefty like you. Well you can use spoon and fork.So no need to use your right hand.
no prob you can use spoon and fork.
Sunray Moonbeam no pblm at all... i nepali and strictly left hander.... it is common in nepal....
Basic idea is just use the hand u don't use to eat unless u r ampituded..
You think left handed doesn’t exsit in Nepal? The concept is not to use same hand for eating which you use for toilet
well i am from nepal and i always use toilet paper. its not true that no one use toilet paper
Sonam Sherpa when I was trekking along the Annapurna circuit my toilet roll was useless due to rain. But I managed to to wipe with some leaves, at that time I felt really close to the nature. 🙏 Om Shanti🙏
we get it you rich
Watee is good.
You should visit Nepal now and update this info. Lot more has changed .
Sorry guys I don't totally agree with you. Everything is available in Nepal if you have money. And in a small amount of money if you want a perfect service or good things then sorry not only in Nepal wherever you go you have to face Same problem.
i live in nepal and i never ever see mens holding hand😞
I live in Nepal and see it everyday. Maybe not so common in KTM.
Where do you actually live in Nepal ?
The Ticket to Travel yes that maybe right😊
are you still living here in nepal?
sankalpa baral i live in kathmandu. why?
then wc to janakpur Nepal :D
The cultural shocks is what makes this small but beautiful country UNIQUE AND MEMORABLE FOR LIFE !

I'm a Nepal-Canadian and I love you guys so much for this video......thanks a lot!!
This is so great. Emma is prepared to come to Nepal. I am so happy to have a video to give our families all a visual of what we are talking about with squat potties etc. And this proves that we aren't making it all up!!!
visiting Nepal would give u many exceptional experiences and of course the daily life might not be similar to of the places u belong but it will surely give u some wonderful memories and i can bet on that
There are squatting toilets only if you stay in cheaper guest houses. Also it's harder to find toilet paper only in the rural part of Nepal.
so u Ben there for while how are locals taking ypu an are you renting home if so what cost
You guys were learned a lot.. Appreciate you guys, keep rocking....
You are good to supporting us thanks keep it up

GOOD TIPS. DO KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

the point of power cut is not a scenario currently in Nepal, although there was but it is no power cut.
I didn't really expect but this video is really useful
Now no loadshedding but sometimes when there's problem it goes for short period
Kudos to you guys!! loving your channel, keep up the good work. Born in Nepal, I can't do what you guys do. God bless

This is probaly a strange question, but do I have to consider the different calendar, when booking a room, or saying to someone, that I'll come at a particular date?
If you say the month for the Gregorian calendar, there will be no confusion. If you said next month on the 15th for example, there could be confusion.
@@HimalayaTreasure Ok, thank you for your answer!!!😀
I love this video too much all the logics are so real😃😃
can i ask u a question? don't u lick your fingers after eating anything which needs your fingers to pick rather than spoons? same goes here in nepalese people after u finish ur dish.

Is the wi fi any good (5 or 6mb)?
+Nate M We got 25 MBPS, its good.
Thanks - have a great day! :)

Thanks for the video
Dnt u have electric there ?
I know I'll annoy someone but I sleep on a buton/futon (cotton stuffed mat) or a hammock anyways, and I have no hesitation about whipping out my spork to eat (don't judge me). Pretty much everything else doesn't bother me at all except the toilet paper. I have a folding solar panel because it's easier to deal with where I live anyway same goes for my breakdown Wood gas stove (I'm sure that's useful in Nepal) and squatting to use the bathroom is fairly common in most countries anyway. 5am is not early at all by the way.
great video!
I think you miss phulchoki

Update for 2021:
1)The everyday power cut no longer exists but foreigners can carry torch as occasional power cuts might happen due to Nepal's land form and climate.

Are you at Hetauda??
I’ve been traveling to NEPAL for a very long time and I admire what you have chosen to do. Actually live in a neighborhood. Adaptation of course takes a while. Somethings are easy others take time. I’ve lived in countries both Middle East Europe and Asia where I now live permanently. Your video was very clear to the point and simple. I really like that. I’m interested that you had no Hindu vs non hindu issues or perhaps you did. The toilet issue is well solved with the water jet if it’s available and much cleaner. Thank you.
8:30 Actually sitting on your hand while eating is also considered bad in Nepalese culture. Considered "Alichina".
lol

seriously...... where in the part of nepal did they visit....... probably they researched just around 10 square km......
