No Need to Trim Sketches in Onshape

  • Whenever we create sketch geometry in Onshape, we can save time by learning how the Onshape extrude command will default to use the outer most perimeter of the sketch geometry. This means that in most scenarios, we don't need to TRIM our sketches in Onshape to get them ready to be extruded!

    Yes, that's very convenient, there are so many times when trimming removes some of the constraints and you need to re-constrain things, this saves a lot of time. Another huge benefit is that you don't need to worry about overlapping lines. For example if you want to create an "L" shape, just draw two rectangles from the same bottom left corner and it's fine.

      yeah I LOVE that you can just do the "multiple rectangle" move to quickly create fully defined geometry, without trimming!

    It's much better than that. You can have a complex sketch with multiple enclosed areas that you can selectively pick or deselect to make up a whole complex extrusion. Then, select another grouping from the same sketch to make another extrusion as a new body within the existing extrusion. This could be used to define a complex boolean construct.

      That's a great point and I should have mentioned that in the video! It is awesome to be able to just sketch out the entire layout in one sketch, and then use and re-use it over and over!!

    When you do need to trim, it messes up with the constraints. So what I learned to do is that instead of trimming, I would use Split, and then turn the bits I don't need into construction lines. This keeps the constraints in place and has been very useful on many occasions.

      Yeah that's a pro move for sure - in SW we can trim and choose "convert trimmed sections to construction geometry" - for exactly the scenario you are describing. Hopefully we'll see that soon in Onshape too!

      @@TooTallToby as another video of yours showed, all you have to do after the trim is hit the Q button.

    • @TooTallToby
      @TooTallToby ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kesor6 But then the line will be eliminated.
      Imagine 2 lines crossing, to form an X shape. I want to trim one of the legs off the X, but I don't want it to delete, I want it to turn into a construction line (so half of the line will be solid, and half will be construction).
      Whenever I trim in Onshape the one leg of the X is completely eliminated. I tried using trim and Q together, but I couldn't get the desired results.

      @@TooTallToby That is why I said, don't use trim - use split + q.

      Split is the button that is in the same menu as Trim.

    Great Tutorial Toby. Could you do one on Planes and Mate connectors Please.

    Didn't notice that extrude works this way. Thanks. How about a parallel set of videos: the basic, but useful, videos you are doing now. And also some videos of using versions and branching. For some reason I can't wrap my head around that feature and keep having to go look for the latest change I made to a document.

      I found Onshape's "Learning Center" to have a decent set of videos on that topic. They have lots of nice free tutorials there too that aren't on TH-cam, plus some exercises.
      I struggled with understanding versions and branching until I looked at that course

      Great suggestion and definitely coming soon to this video series! Thanks for the advice and direction too!!

    Very much enjoying these videos as I learn Onshape. One thing I have been struggling with is setting the radius for a partially completed arc which I have seen a few times in your modelling excersies any chance of addressing this in a short tips video?

      Thank you! - Yes I am also not seeing the auto-dimension for the LINE-ARC-LINE workflow - Is that what you are referring to?

      @@TooTallToby Thanks for responding. I'm not entirely sure what the function is called I'm very much a newcomer to CAD. I was working on your practice video 21-02-12 and I've been struggling with the arc R89.

    Demand for a 1hr masterclass for those who want to transition from SW to onshape.

    Appreciate the continued improvements in OnShape. I'd like to see precedence for feature lines over construction lines when using the Offset tool and others where you're selecting geometry in succession. Right now there can be times where a lot right clicking and 'Select other' is needed to reference the correct geometry.

    • @airwick5083
      @airwick5083 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have found that in Onshape it's better not to have too much "construction" geometry showing at once for the reason you describe. I find I just end up toggling sketches on and off more than I would have in SW.

      Yeah the select other command might help in these spots, but I totally see what you're saying about it getting confusing. 🙂
