The Gray dotted section above the output tray is the door for the cartridges, Grab around the right edge of the Gray section and pull toward you. the door opens downward, the cartidges will slide to the middle where you can change them.
I would have been nice if you could clarify whether the duplex scanning (and faxing) is achieved in a single pass OR if it employs a mechanical duplexer that reverses each sheet of paper so as to scan the back side. Alas, HP does not bother to mention that in the printer's specifications.

How do you guys print to it after it turns itself off? We find it very inconvenient that it turns off, and print jobs fail when we try to print after it turns off... we have it set to turn on at 7am... but 8 hours later it turns off... so thats like 3pm... we need it to stay on for a lot more hours. We use the network. (not USB) it's pretty far away from the PC because it is huge.

Hi. I chose the HP7740. I'm happy with the performance and the only issue I had was that documents tended to copy/ scan askew using the document feeder. I did see other reviewers with similar complaints, however, I was using the same model printer at someone else's office this past month and did not experience the same issue so maybe it was since fixed. I think too the reason I did not choose the Brother was because it could not copy/scan 11x17 paper...I can't remember for certain but I think that was the deciding factor for me.

@Masal_Kcvl Honestly I'm not sure how to measure that. What I can tell you is that you can only scan that size on the scanner bed so if you have a lot of sheets it will take time to do. But like you I was looking for something that could handle A3 paper and honestly I couldn't find any home printer comparable to the HP7740.
Oh come on, these are not art printers, that's really shoddy advice. Becky, you really need to be looking at some of the Canon or Epson photo printers but they are twice this price. Ask retailers for a sample print before you buy.
For the benefit of others I'll stand by my comment, printing for a business will of course require a budget limit and this is very good value. Printing solely for aesthetics is a combination of dot resolution, the technology of getting that onto paper, the paper quality, ink quality and most importantly the number of inks employed. This is primary a business machine, it prints graphs and it 'can do' pictures. The limitation is that it is trying to reproduce millions of colours with just three inks. The end result is that a dithered colour is not going to look realistic, nor will it accurately reproduce the original colour. (e.g. The reds on mine look basically pink) The latest Cannon or Epson's are now using ten colours, that's a vastly more accurate way of delivering colour. This will be more noticeable dependant on the image type, a face is harder to reproduce than a Monet. Anyway, glad you like it, but I'd still advise more research if you ever come to upgrade. Please note that the reviewer here doesn't care either way, he's just banging out unboxings on youtube for the cash, only take advice from people who are in the same field as you.
Hi William, if you look at minute 2:45 in the video. The bottom tray is holding the 11x17 paper. You have to open the tray in order for it to fit the 11x17 paper. Hope this helps!

Note that unlike HP's claim (and the trays have "A3" markings inside, this is NOT an A3 printer. The maximum size is 11x17 inches which is US Legal format. (A3 is 420mm X 297mm). (I bought it specifically for printing A3 paper, and that paper format does NOT fit in either tray.)

It showed that the lower tray has a clip you need to push and that will then extend the tray. (in the video the material was white plastic, on mine it is black). There is no mention of this in the documentation that I got with the printer. That is the first time I've ever seen that on a printer (and I've worked with dozens of A3 printers). So yeah, you were right. The A3 format DOES fit.

You're both right. HP have a horrible anti-consumer practice to use different cartridge model numbering for different regions. In this case: US & Canada: 952 (CMY ~700 pages, Black ~1000 pages), 952XL (CMY ~1600 pages, Black ~2000 pages) and 956XL (Black only ~3000 pages) EMEA: 953 (CMY ~700 pages, Black ~1000 pages), 953XL (CMY ~1600 pages, Black ~2000 pages) and 957XL (Black only ~3000 pages) Latin America: 954 (CMY ~700 pages, Black ~1000 pages), 954XL (CMY ~1600 pages, Black ~2000 pages) and 958XL (Black only ~3000 pages) APAC: 955 (CMY ~700 pages, Black ~1000 pages), 955XL (CMY ~1600 pages, Black ~2000 pages) and 959XL (Black only ~3000 pages) This means that if you buy your printer in Europe and try to install US cartridge, it will refuse to print, even though the cartridge is mechanically identical and the ink is the same. Yes, I print Artwork on mine, I do Pencil Portraits and Oil Paint reprints for sale.. use quality photo paper to print. I use Hammermill Brand Matte finish for pencil Drawings and Glossy for Oil paintings. I print on 11x17, 11x14 and 8x10 etc, no issues... great quality

Just like any printer nowadays , just disable the auto off/power saver feature or whatever it's called in settings.

They are very similar units. But you should ideally get what you paid for. The two printers are functionally almost identical

This printer has nice quality but has its issues not wanting to grab paper and messing up prints on my 1$ a piece paper smh
