Episodes 68 & 70 Notes: The Battle of Khaybar In Muharram of 7AH, the Prophet SAW announced that he was going to launch a pre-emptive offensive on Khaybar. Khaybar was populated by many Yahudi tribes including the exiled Banu Qaynuqa and Banu Nadir. The Banu Nadir had initiated the Battle of Khandaq by going to the Quraysh and they were funded by the Yahud of Khaybar. So now that, the Muslims had the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. The only potential threat to Medina, was the Yahud of Khaybar. Thus an offensive was launched and 1700 Muslims left Medina and marched to Khaybar. The Muslims reached Khaybar within 2 days and camped outside the area. Khaybar consisted of many mini fortresses each belonging to a tribe. The advance of the Muslim army was a surprise to the Yahud, since they did not expect to be attacked so soon. When the Yahud saw the Muslims, they ran into their fortresses and this is when the Prophet SAW stated that, “Allahu Akbar, Kharibat Khaybar” meaning God is Great, Khaybar has fallen. Thus the offensive began and the Muslims attacked one fortress at a time. During the Battle of Khaybar, the Sahabah RA would take turns leading contingents. Abu Bakr RA led one day and the next Umar RA. Ali RA also led the army as a commander during the Battle of Khaybar and he killed Marhab, who was one of the fortresses commanders. Through the efforts of the Sahabah RA, each of the fortresses fall one after the other. Some of these fortresses were conquered by waiting for the Yahud’s supplies to run out. For others, the Muslims cut off water supplies in order to force the Yahud men out, so that they can fight them. Each time a fortress fell, the survivors fled to another fortress, until only one fortress remained. This fortress was the largest and all of the refugees from previous fortresses had fled there. Thus the Muslims camped outside this fortress since it was too large to attack and they waited. Eventually, the Yahud inside understood that, they were surrounded and supplies would inevitably dwindle. The Yahud then agreed to a conditional surrender, to the Prophet SAW and he agreed with 3 conditions. The first being that, half of all produce from Khaybar would be given to the Muslims. The second was that, the Yahud would handle all labour and maintenance costs. The final was that, the treaty would only be in effect for as long as the Muslims wanted. The Yahud, who hand no other option, agreed. Thus after 1 month of fighting, the battle came to an end. This treaty however, only applied to the people of Khaybar, the Banu Nadir that had been exiled were taken as captives. - The Conquest of Fadak Fadak was a smaller tribe that was near Khaybar. They feared that the Muslims may attack them too after Khaybar. So they offered the same deal the Yahud from Khaybar had offered and the Prophet SAW accepted it. Even though the Muslims had no intention to attack them. Fadak was then used by the Prophet SAW to fund his family. - The Attempt at Poisoning the Prophet SAW The Yahud then prepared a feast for the Prophet SAW, but the cook was Zaynab Bint Al Harith whose husband had just been killed in the battle. She thus attempted the poison the Prophet SAW and the Muslims. The Prophet SAW took the meat and put it in his mouth before warning everyone to stop eating. The Prophet SAW then told the Muslims that, the meat had spoken to him and told him that, it had been poisoned. The Sahabah RA spat the meat out. Mean whilst, one Sahabi, called Bishar Ibn Al Barra died a few days later, because he swallowed the meat before being warned by the Prophet SAW. The Prophet SAW confronted Zaynab and forgave her but, she was later killed as qisas, after Bishar passed away from the poison. - Aftermath It was after the Battle of Khaybar, that the Abyssinian Muslims came back to Arabia and re-joined the Muslims at Medina permanently. Jaffar RA went to Khaybar personally to meet the Prophet SAW. It was after the Battle of Khaybar, when Abu Hurairah RA came to Khaybar and became a Sahabi. Fun Trivia fact: The Muslims were in such high spirits when marching to Khaybar that, they began screaming Allahu Akbar and the Prophet SAW told them to calm down. Trivia fact: Mahmood Ibn Masalamah Al Ansari RA was a Sahabi that, was squashed to death during the Battle of Khaybar. The Yahud from the top of their fortress, threw a log that killed him. Fun Trivia fact: During the Battle of Khaybar Ali RA sustained injuries in his eyes and couldn’t see very well. Thus the Prophet SAW rubbed his spit in Ali RA’s eyes and his eye sight became normal again. Fun Trivia fact: During the Battle of Khaybar, Ali RA received an Karamat from Allah SWT. Ali RA had his shield knocked out of his hand and thus he picked up a piece of fortress wall with one hand and used it as a shield. Fun Trivia fact: During the Battle of Khaybar, a Yahudi slave accepted Islam and fought for the Muslims and was later killed. He is one of the few who died without praying any Salaah to Allah SWT. Fun Trivia fact: The Yahud from Khaybar, would send money to the Muslims up until the end of Umar RA’s Khalifah, when he terminated the treaty. The Yahud then left Khaybar after an agreed date and relocated to other lands. Fun Trivia fact: The Prophet SAW’s favourite meat was the shoulder blade of a lamb. Trivia fact: The Prophet SAW, years later, felt the after effects of the poison, of Zaynab Bint Al Harith, even on his deathbed. Fun Trivia fact: Those who participated in the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah were given larger amounts of spoils after the Battle of Khaybar, as per Allah SWT’s promise in Surah Al Fath. Fun Trivia fact: The Prophet SAW loved Jafar RA and stated, “I don’t know what pleases me more, victory at Khaybar or the return of Jafar RA”. Fun Trivia fact: The Muslims of Abyssinia despite not participating in the Battle of Khaybar, still got a share of the spoils. Abu Hurairah RA also received spoils, despite not participating in the battle. Fun Trivia fact: Khaybar was the largest land that, the Prophet SAW ever captured. Fun Trivia fact: The Prophet SAW never ate rice in his entire life. Fun Trivia fact: A group of Ansari women participated in the Battle of Khaybar by taking care of the wounded. Fun Trivia fact: It was at Khaybar or Hudaybiyyah when the Prophet SAW forbade Muslims from eating donkey meat. ========================================================== Disclaimer for my Notes of Sheikh Yasir Qadhi’s Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam Series: Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh, these are my notes on Sheikh Yasir Qadhi’s Seerah series. I felt it awkward when Sheikh mentioned the marriage preparation and some people in the background can't stop their laughter. It might have touched their sense of humour but common it is Prophet saw's bride, what are you laughing at? Auzubillah!
I do not excuse anyone due to the normal behavior of the time, but punishing aggressors and oppressors who don't give up information or wealth they were supposed to does not compare to torture top nation states allow of prisoners and captives of war. Safiyah bint Huyayy would have been subject to a waiting, if Dihya had taken her as either a wife or sex slave, but there are a number of narrations and verses that would make clear slaves were not to be sexually used. Her husband may not have left her alone long enough for the waiting period to be over when she married prophet M Muhammad marrying a daughter from two of his great enemies is a good idea to follow, if one can make it work, but who of us could make that work. Actually, Ibn Abbas narrated far more about Prophet Muhammad than Abu Harayrah (Abdurrahman) in the historical sense. Ali ibn Talib has far more chains attributed to him when you get outside of the main 40 narrators of the Sunni. Keep away from is not filth (junub la najs) in Islam. You have done wrong by saying a woman's first period made her unclean when the guy who refused to come near Prophet Muhammad on his way to bathe was corrected for considering himself dirty. Any goods that are treated as currency would be under the same interest rules as money.
