the arpeggio he was showing in the octives, when i first saw him talking about it, i got my metronome out and i practiced it for a few weeks, i was jamming with a friend and when i was in the moment i used it and WOW, it freaking makes you sound like your the guitar boss lol. Thanks Paul!
Paul is an amazing teacher, and every time I watch him play I'm encouraged to go try something new on the guitar. His videos got me into shred guitar in the first place. Rock on Paul!
Man, it's such a pleasure to hear someone with the kind of technical skill Gilbert has playing with something other than a high-gain metal tone. It really allows his technique and skill to come out...
The fact that you want to teach is amazing. How many other "world class" guitarists would take the time to teach us. You absolutely rock! Thanks for all you do.
His style of teaching is so refreshing to me. Absolutely no ego, explains in a way that's easy to understand, and makes you feel like you're sitting directly across from him. I would love to sit in a room for a private lesson with Paul, I can only imagine what I'd learn.
Unbelievable.. he explained a years' worth of advanced ear training and applied music theory in minutes. Great teacher. clear explanations and very approachable lessons , as always. Thanks Paul!
Paul Gilbert --> No ego, just guitars! This lesson is a classic example of how well Paul can teach and how much he loves teaching and more importantly how humble he can be! He is by far my favourite guitarist-person!
I've been playing now for eight years and I wish I would have started watching Paul's videos from day one. Only the past two years or so have I really watched most of them and they have done worlds for me. He is by far the best teacher I've seen online and has the best method for explaining things to people. This octave lesson is probably one of the most useful that I've seen him do. What I'd do to pick his brain for one hour...
The thing I like about these Paul Gilbert videos is that an even an over-the-hill rocker like me can understand what he's doing. My rock & roll days are long over but I can always learn something new by coming back to these Gilbert lessons.
a small glimpse into the mind of a genius!! makes you think what sounds complicated sound and look easy...... the greatest guitar teacher ever! awesome guitarist, teacher and human!!
Thank god. Finally someone who sounds decent and can teach slow and easy. I play by ear and sight, so this helped me speed up a few techniques. My Ibanez Radius says she loves you. Thanks.
For myself Pauls lessons have helped me excel incredibly, one of the best things I got out of them is that he always picks every note including hammers and pulls.... Now I don't sound like everyone else, my leads have zest and are tasty as hell!!! Thank you Paul!!!
man, you got hte most useful chanel on youtube! been busting my skull steeping on this level and this is the only thing that breaks it to my level. thanks!
Paul Gilbert must be the greatest teacher of all time, even when he's not trying to be. I've had a idea for a little 4 chord verse progression but this one chord was bugging me, when he mentioned the A7 chord i thought "Wait a minute", paused the video, played the song (with the A7 Chord) & it works perfectly!!!!! THANKS PAUL!!
add me to the list of those who learned something tangible and as a result my understanding of the guitar expanded and it transfers rather easily to the fretboard when applied by playing the shapes at the different root levels. Opened me up to an almost endless variety of phrases and solo ideas......really really good stuff!
Simplified, essential and just down right enjoyable to watch and learn. He gets straight to the point and shows advanced guitar techniques aren't that intimidating. Would gladly part with my money for lessons. Love ya work Paul 🤘🏽🤩🎸💦
Thanks Paul, short and sweet. I am playing since 85 I must have a head as thick as a watermelon. There is still hope to break the ice with a teacher like you I am getting motivated to push again, thank you.
Just when I thought I finally learned my lesson well, There was more to this than meets the eye And for all the things you taught me, only time will tell, If I'll be able to survive, oh yeah.38 special. You are a great teacher teacher!👍
Who are the 119 bafoons that gave this a thumbs down? Paul Gilbert is phenomenal....Not only a great guitar player, but he does a great job of teaching
Paul, Thanks for the lesson. I'm a newbie, got about 8 months in and practice every morning. I have dream of Satrioni type shit but with my own tone and you lesson just opened up another way to practice my licks and to mix it up. Keep up the great work, you video was definitley and inspiration and I tell you this. When JustinG - Spontaneous Licks and Wang-n Riffs comes out you'll be duly noted. Thanks Again.
Hell yeah you learn stuff. I watched a video last night and god..It really helped me out a lot today and everything just seemed so much easier and cleaner.
You give me such a insperation thank you so much for this and keep going Txn. Jan JR Lundqvist Sweden gutarplayer +50 year old but still learning stuff !
+mark Smith the real Buckethead eats less chicken. he's taller, plus his hair is longer, he wears a bucket, and is camera shy, his style is different. oh yeah, he has a different real name.
Jazz person here. The C# half diminished arpeggio works over the A7 chord because the first three notes of the arpeggio (C#, E, G) are the third, fifth and seventh tones of the A7 chord. The seventh of the C# half diminished arpeggio (B) is the ninth of degree of A7. So when you play the C# half diminished arpeggio over an A7 chord, you're actually just playing an A9 arpeggio without the root, which fits the chord perfectly.
Paul Gilbert is a great player and a gifted teacher. A true blessing to the guitar world.
+Gareth Barry Could not agree more!
And a super cool dude!
agreed
Is he giving lessons on string skipping?
The same goes with guthrie !
This is the first time someone has explained arpeggios without the verbal hype.
A truly great lesson. Thank you.
Great man, great teacher, wonderful musician.

I love how paul can make the most basic things sound really cool.
Pauls laid back and kind personality adds to his gift as an exceptional instructor.... I wish I knew him personally..
Paul Gilbert videos have been my #1 source of improvement for the past 15 years. Greatest rock guitar teacher of our time imo.
yeah licks are playable and actually sound good
the arpeggio he was showing in the octives, when i first saw him talking about it, i got my metronome out and i practiced it for a few weeks, i was jamming with a friend and when i was in the moment i used it and WOW, it freaking makes you sound like your the guitar boss lol. Thanks Paul!
wow.
I constantly return to Paul's lessons, because his teaching is sooo eye and ear opening.
I learn something every time I watch this dude. Great teacher

Best teacher on TH-cam. EVER!
Paul Gilbert never ceases to amaze me. Such a freaking shredder, but plays so tasteful at the same time.
his lessons are hands down the best. He comes off in a non-pretentious way and he slows it down for me to learn.....
The fact that you want to teach is amazing. How many other "world class" guitarists would take the time to teach us. You absolutely rock! Thanks for all you do.

I love this guy , and his way of teaching....ive been a fan for way over 20 years and met him twice in 91/92 with Mr Big...
PAUL GILBERT has been doing this educational video since I dont know when and he has to be the best at doing this! Bravo Paul!
He seems like such a cool and nice guy..like a person who would be a great friend to have
Unbelievable.. he explained a years' worth of advanced ear training and applied music theory in minutes. Great teacher. clear explanations and very approachable lessons , as always. Thanks Paul!
Best teacher ever. Explains it in simple terms and it’s stuff you can actually use...
A genius. Great that there are still people like this prepared to pass on their hard earned knowledge.
My new guru. His style is just so wonderful. And of course he gives you the magic button to opening up the fretboard.
Paul Gilbert has the unfair advantage of having 4 index fingers.
LOL
Man that is too funny! Best comment
Love it dude! 4 index fingers!!!
😂 rofl
So do Guthrie and Vai
Paul Gilbert --> No ego, just guitars! This lesson is a classic example of how well Paul can teach and how much he loves teaching and more importantly how humble he can be! He is by far my favourite guitarist-person!
Paul Gilbert is the most informative when he is teaching. This is what makes him a great teacher as well as an amazing player.

Let the sweepers of the world take care of the sweeps
That's the failed guitar players...they get to sweep the floor at the venue after the show is over...
Syn gates plays a lot of sweep but he's pretty damn good xd
Sweeping is just another method. It's all good.

Paul !!! You'r the man !!!!!!!!!
Dont ya wish you had this dude as your guitar teacher once or twice a week for a few years?
What's great about Gilbert is he is so humble and down to earth not to mention a guitar genius.
Stan Lee he was the Teacher of a guy for one year, Buckecthead
Stan Lee but then you wouldn't have time to write comics Stan
That's where Buckethead came from
I knew a guy who took lessons from him and he was an amazing guitarist. Unfortunately he passed away. RIP.

And he is one hell of a teacher, too.

The old phrase "those who can't teach" definitely does not apply hear because he is GREAT at both!!!
Bloody stupid phrase, it should be "those who can't shouldn't teach".
It applies to teachers in public school tho

Jazz person here.
The C# half diminished arpeggio works over the A7 chord because the first three notes of the arpeggio (C#, E, G) are the third, fifth and seventh tones of the A7 chord. The seventh of the C# half diminished arpeggio (B) is the ninth of degree of A7. So when you play the C# half diminished arpeggio over an A7 chord, you're actually just playing an A9 arpeggio without the root, which fits the chord perfectly.
the best rock and roll teacher :)) thank you Paul Gilbert
