    In this video you will see I was washing a shingle roof using bleach soap and water. What do you want to do is take a pump sprayer that you can buy on Amazon put 75% bleach add 6 to 8 ounces of dishwashing soap fill it up the rest of the way with water 25% shake it up spray it on, let the rain wash it off or rinse it with the hose
    You can also put it on Full strength Bleach if the stains are bad. I am a Contractor and i use 12.5 Industrial Bleach

    Forgot to add. I watched this video about a year and a half ago and went straight to the store. It worked like a charm! Now I am inpatient so I rinsed one section and left another for the rain to wash away and the both turned out amazing! I wish I could add pictures! Thanks for making this video!

      I am glad it worked for you it always has worked for me and to be honest with you I’ve made a whole bunch of money doing it. There are people on here telling me that I’m doing it wrong and then it won’t work and all this kind of stuff but obviously you are a living proof my method works great thank you for the comment I really appreciate that. Don't use the mix provided in the video. Dawn soap is NOT bleach stable. You will cause the bleach to become weak and cause harmful chemical reactions. Read the dawn soap bottle, says it right there! Hire a professional.

      Thank you and what you could do to help me the most would be give me a thumbs up on the video and maybe a share. So I’m glad I was able to help you and yeah 20 bucks you can wash your roof. If you hired a professional they probably charge you 400. I think that’s stupid I’d like to show people how to do things on their own. I was raised doing things and learning things that I could do on my own. That’s what made me the man I am today. So I’m glad I was able to help you. If you look at my channel I have to do have a few more Roof Wash videos. House wash also vinyl siding is easy to clean. When you do the roof you might have to mix the bleach fairly heavy when you do vinyl siding you mix the bleach very light

      Very true rinsing can speed up the process. If you have a Lotta rain in your area you can just let the rain do it. But renting it can speed up the process if the stains are dark use stronger bleach or less water

      @@Drewsroofingandhomerepair I did the cleaning recently and it mostly worked, but I have a couple bits of feedback for other viewers:
      1) My roof had more debris, and more moss (at least on the north side) than the house in your video. As such, I should have swept the roof, and if safely, maybe even brushed or scraped some of the moss away. I have a fairly low angle roof, this might be harder for someone else and their home. Safety is most important!
      2) A friend was watching me and he said I was putting down a lot of solution on the roof, even though it didn't seem like it. He shot a video clip of me, and it sure looked like I did put a lot, but I later realized it's because in the video I was mostly back-lit. I definitely used less solution than you show in your instruction here, as I didn't have it running off as much, and that was a mistake. When in doubt, use more! The solution doesn't seem to harm the roof one bit, so using a lot is a good idea, especially on a roof that needs it.
      3) The debris that came down, especially on the north/most mossy side of my roof, partly clogged my gutters. Be aware if you have a roof with a lot of moss, junk and growth on it.
      4) It definitely made a difference anyway, even if I didn't use enough. In fact, I think I'm good for now. I am in the northwest and it's now rainy season. I'm going to re-evaluate again late spring, and if the roof still has bits of moss, simply repeat the process, using a broom first, then plenty of solution next time.
      Very simple to do. Very inexpensive. Works well. Just be safe. Have a good ladder, and a friend to spot you.

    • @Drewsroofingandhomerepair
      @Drewsroofingandhomerepair  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your amazing feedback. Just to let you know I don’t recommend sweeping the most off to be honest the best thing to do would be if there’s Maas is to use to bleach straight with soap no water. That will release the fingers of the moss and then it can be easily washed off with a water hose.

Your not holding a gun to anybody’s head saying use this or else. By looking at the shape of the shingles/ knowing how old they are are things you should know as well and just taking a few minutes to properly think about all the variables people should be able to decide what dilution is best! If your shingles are 5 years old or 25 years old makes a big difference. An older women asked me to clean her roof and siding for a side job if I want too so this is why I found your page. You are very welcome and to be honest it really works well. I use a commercial bleach. It is 12.5 your normal bleach you buy at Lowe’s is probably 6% so if your stains are heavy you can go with straight bleach 6 ounces of dish soap, sprayed on rinse it off. Make sure you rinse all your bushes around the house as it will stain the leaves and sometimes kill them if it hits the roots. All you have to do is make sure you water down everything before you do the roof if there is vegetation around or downspouts.

      If it’s really thick don’t put any water just use bleach and soap let it sit on there for 30 minutes and then rinse it off with a garden hose do not spray up the roof as the water will go under the shingles.

      Thank you for answering that Ryan and you are 100% right never pressure wash Shingles you can do this with a devil on tape pump or you can just do it with a hand pump spray her like I did easy homeowner job. don’t go up there slipping in sliding.

      Listen if it’s really bad mix the solution straight bleach and soap only let it sit up there for 30 minutes and then rinse it off it’s all you have to do. Don’t worry about putting the water in there it might be too weak for your situation.

    Hey sir , great video.
    Just quick question , we do seamless gutters here in Houston and I wanted to ask you how do you keep the plants from getting bleach if they don’t have gutters ?
    Also let’s say you do have gutters and the downspout are going straight to a flower bed . What would be good advise in this situation ?

    • @Drewsroofingandhomerepair
      @Drewsroofingandhomerepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The first thing you do before you get on the roof is water water water on the plants and on the ground near the house. If they have gutters you can also bag the gutter with plastic green bags. But for the most part I spray it on from the top until it gets down to the bottom and stop. I don’t rinse my roof off I let the rain do it therefore The bleach is diluted by the rain. You can also use pool shock for washing a roof. Rinsing the plants before and after you do the roof cleaning is important. If you do not have gutters don’t worry about rinsing the roof like I said let the rain do it

    THANK YOU for sharing your softwash recipe and technique! My roof was literally black on about 1/2 its surface area with mold/algae/etc from being in the shade from surrounding trees where these areas don't get constant direct sunlight in the summer months. I used and did what you recommend and it looks like NEW. The only difference is I instead used Home Depot HDX Germicidal Bleach (8.25% SC) and it was about the same prices as Walmart concentrated which is now only 6% SC. I mixed at a ratio of 3 gallons of this 8.25% bleach with 1 gallon water and 4oz concentrated dawn per gallon. I also used the $20 four gallon Harbor Freight backpack sprayer that saved me having to make more trips up/down the ladder. Drew you're the man, thanks again for the information.

It’s not a hard job make sure you rinse all the plants down with freshwater before you do the roof. And make sure you weren’t stem again after you clean the roof and it’s done I charge up to $800 for a big roof

      Keeping it real here at Drew’s Roofing And Home Repair. I want people to be able to watch my video and realized that this is not a big deal and that it can be done by homeowner. And if the homeowner does not want to do it themselves and at least it lets them know that it can be done. So people like you are great for taking care of the people that don’t want to do it themselves. And there is good money in this business. You should go to an industrial supply store that sells pressure washing stuff and start a little at a time by in a little bit of this in a little bit of that they will tell you what you need to make your business efficient. That’s what I did I started out slow. I still don’t have the Dev line pump set up which would be awesome but I only do the videos I do to show homeowners that they don’t need a devil on pump or a contractor to wash their shingles. If they feel comfortable getting out there that can easily do it with what I use remember if you go to an industrial supply store they will sell you a 12.5 bleach that is what I use when I buy my bleach I buy it straight 12 five I do not buy what they call house wash. House wash they sell is pre-deluded. Can do it cheaper yourself. Find an industrial supply store somewhere near you that sells pressure washing equipment. It’s where you’ll find your best information.

    I followed the mixture instructions to the letter (1 gal water + 1 gal Clorox bleach + 8 oz. Dawn) and was not pleased with the results. I let it sit on the roof for 24 hours, then hosed it down and the results were disappointing. It took off very little of the mildew/mold. Our roof is very large and very steep so missing it the first time was a bummer. I ended up redoing the entire roof with no soap, just the 50/50 solution of bleach/water, and that worked great. I would suggest using less soap or none at all. Also, using a 4-gallon backpack sprayer (I used the $160 Black + Decker model) saves a lot of time.

    So just to be clear, I can use regular household bleach mixed 3:1 if I don’t have 12.5% industrial bleach? Should I still expect similar results or is the 12.5% what really does it

    • @Drewsroofingandhomerepair
      @Drewsroofingandhomerepair  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can mix household bleach or what they sell at Lowe’s or Home Depot called outdoors bleach put 2/3 bleach 1/3 water 6 to 8 ounces of dish soap shake it up one time spray it on that will work. If by chance that does not work on the darker places you can either hit them again or you can take straight bleach 6 to 8 ounces of soap mix that up and spray that on guaranteed that will work.

      I always wet down my plants and grass especially around the downspouts and remember I do not rinse my roof off so I let the rain rinse it off and generally there is enough water to dilute the bleach so that it does not kill your grass. Can you comment on the bleach used? A lot of the bleaches come in a one gallon concentrate. Do you use the measurement of the dilution for one gallon of bleach or do you use the entire 1 gallon bottle? Your response it greatly appreciated.

    • @Drewsroofingandhomerepair
      @Drewsroofingandhomerepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can go to Lowe’s or Home Depot and get their concentrated bleach or you can use your washing machine bleach in order for this mold to get removed on your roof bleach Hass to be fairly strong. When I do a roof I use 12.5 bleach and I dilute it 50% if I’m using household bleach and your roof is real bad put a gallon of bleach a gallon of water 8 ounces of dishwasher soap give it a shot spray it up there or leave it. Let the rain wash it off you can spray it on with a pump sprayer be careful on your roof it can get slippery as you were using soap

    Do yourself a favor and get yourself a 4 gallon backpack sprayer and use pool shock from the pool store. It'll be much better/cheaper. 1:1 water and pool shock. And you really don't need soap, But it helps stick on those steep roofs. I own a pressure wash/soft wash business and wash multiple roofs a week.

    Dont know if you know there is a bigger machine similar to a pressure washer and a chemical you can buy similar to your solution that from a latter you can float spray it on any roof let sit 10 mins and rinse aways works the same make about $1000 for a roof that size..good work for what you have tho.

    • @Drewsroofingandhomerepair
      @Drewsroofingandhomerepair  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No I don’t really know that answer because I’m not sure what you’re using. But I would say since you have it it should be worth a try. But my guess is using a pump sprayer would be the best way to go for a homeowner clean. If the roof is real dirty 50% bleach 50% water 6 to 8 ounces of soap. If the stains are real dark straight bleach. And 6 to 8 ounces of dish detergent shake it up spray it on. And then rinse it off. Make sure you wash your bushes down before you spray the roof
