Toy Polloi, I'm new to these videos .... learning a lot. I never thought of the lighter fluid or ironing. Also surprised that I was doing somethings right. (at least). I didn't know there was a "community" of toy collectors / repairmen like this. Nice.
I use an acid free clear glue for the splitting if the card stock. Got it at a art supply store. Use it on my Hotwheel cards when the corners are dinged. Works like a charm.
Great video! You mentioned glue, and having troubles with it letting go over time. I've repaired a few boxes with bookbinder's grade PVA glue. Here in the States you have to get it at a good art supply store. It looks and smells like ordinary white glue but it soaks into the paper better, is less prone to wrinkle, and it's stronger. I glued a corner back together with no backing about five years ago and it's still holding. Sometimes, if you're lucky, you can get a nearly invisible repair with it.
Thanks, Dave! I have used your lighter fluid tip for cleaning a number of boxes. Now the colours really pop and the amount of dirt that comes off is scary. Always best to try it in a small area first to make sure the box will respond well to the fluid - just to be sure. I have had no problems so far. What a great channel!
I tried that, I didn’t like it. There’s something odd when it catches the light and the colour is slightly different. And there’s no satin sheen on Sharpie covered areas.
Try a black dry erase marker, works great you can wipe off the excess that goes on sheen, but I haven't figured out how to replace sheen..(old VHS boxes)!
Very interesting video Dave I was wondering how I could fix a box of a gi joe cobra mamba the box look like it got water on it its rippled a bit I was wondering if I should use an iron to make the ripples disepear. Thanks
For the BETATRON box, what about creating an "internal box" out of a stronger card-stock to slip inside the box to add support and re-shape the vintage box?
Toy Polloi, Eagle - I'm in the process of doing this right now on a Technofix box. Man is it tough. The problem I found was the bottom of the box wouldn't fit the new top. Easy enough - I made a new bottom with new cardboard. It's plain - no print so no harm no foul.
How would I go about restoring a hole in a thicker box? Our Harry Potter trunk arrived with a small hole in the bottom. I thought about perhaps using expanding foam, but I thought that might make the hole worse or larger.
I think when we’re all younger. We didn’t care about the box of our action figures. But as we grow wiser and older. We understand the value of keeping the box
hi do you know how to restore repair cut marks on box i accidently unpacked my game console box with a craft knife and cut the box a few times please can you help thanks
What would you recommend to place on a very old big cardboard toy box to preserve them from any damages. Clear Plastic bags? Please advise me on the next course of action or maybe quick video would do the job. Thanking you in advance for your time
@@toypolloi ORIGINAL CASTLE GRAYSKULL BOX, DARKSEID DESTROYER, DELTA PROBE ONE, JUSTICE JOGGER FROM THE KENNER SUPER POWERS LINE. HOW MUCH WOULD THAT BE? DO YOU KNOW WHERE i CAN GET THEM? DO YOU KNOW THE RIGHT MEASUREMENTS FOR THESE TOY BOXES?
Great instructions! Goo Gone removes old tape residue as well. And placing a piece of parchment paper between the box and the iron works better than a tea towel. 😉
The plastic coating is a Matt laminate to keep the damp out and stop the colour running. Also stops the heavy ink coverage from cracking on the edges when it's die cut to shape and assembled.
Nice tutorial, do you know how to fix a crack in a plastic box at all please? I brought this Star Wars Mega Figurine set and the plastic window has a crack in it and a dent. I thought clear sellotape (transparent tape) but wasn' sure if this is the correct way. Thank You.
Great video, I have some PC computer game cardboard boxes in need of a repair so this video is great to find/see! Quick Question: how long does the tape last - is there a big brand we could look for that will last for years and years before the glues stops sticking and the tape falls off?
I have a vintage Skipper cardboard room playset that I want to repair tears on, the problem is that the cardboard is printed on both sides. Do you have any recommendations on how to fix a tear and add some permanence? Or is it acceptable to add tape on the inside where it’s less visible?
Toy Polloi it’s “chip board” from 1964, so a very thick cardboard designed to be bent repeatedly by a child. The problem is that the chipboard is covered in the paper design. I like that thin plastic idea, I’m worried I wouldn’t be able to get the paper up to insert it though.
I don't think I have ever fixed a box, but what I usually do on books is to just use regular PVA (elmer's?) glue, applying it very carefully with a toothpick or a piece of card stock for those tears that leave some of the front on one piece and some of the back on the other. But for the box corners gummed paper tape is probably _the_ best solution if not the only acceptable one.
Not easy as you tend to damage the box more than the pen mark in the first place. There are plenty of tips around for doing this. But I tend to leave it as is.
Without having done a search yet, would you happen to know how to remove permanent marker from a box? I recently picked up a MOTU castle Grayskull box with writing on it and want to recondition.
Great video! Question about the Betatron box and its torn side flap: Since you're very good with photoshop, have you considered trying to re-create and print out a "patch" for the damaged and missing cardboard? Or, possibly scanning in the opposite undamaged side of the box, and either use it as a template or "flip it" and print it out as a completely new replacement side flap?
Ben, I've done exactly that. Photo copied opposite sides of a box and filled in bare spots. It's not professional but a great amature repair. I also photo copy the inside of the box to make patches of the same coloration to fix those torn corners and brace them. (not packing tape). Very satisfying to bring a box back to life.
Thanks for the quick reply, I think the 47mm used in your box repair guide, is probably the best general size to use, for old scale model boxes. And for large Action Man/Star Wars vehicle/base Boxes, which usually have thicker cardboard, one can use bigger size up to 70mm+ or even just cut up a couple of 47mm strips.Either way, the use of gummed tape is brilliant for carded toy Box restoration, many thanks for this great repair guide.
Great job, came out looking great! I always enjoying watching the progress in one of your project videos. Do you have any good tips for vinyl case repair? Like the old Star Wars ones. I tore the flap around the button Fastener one day while opening it in the winter. The cold made the vinyl fabric brittle apparently, and it tore a bit. would you consider doing a video on this topic?
Im very sorry i don't mean to be rude or a jerk but im having a bit of trouble understanding him say what type of tape he uses.. Correct me if im wrong but did he say gum tape?
When I order an action figure on eBay or Amazon. If I see damaged parts. I just use clear tape to repair the broken parts. And usually not badly damaged. Since the figures I buy are new and unopened. If you buy used, definitely damaged box.
It's almost like you're really lucky with finds so you can show off restorations :p Torn box with two types of rip? Impressive restoration video, I may try it out on my old GameBoy cases

Brilliant , very satisfying result. I would be tempted to add and missing card and repaint where possible though personally.

Lighter fluid ? From actual lighter?
Have you thought about using a black sharpie pen to colour in some of the specks rips?
The only thing with sharpie is it goes a somewhat purple colour, I've never tried it but maybe a fabric marker would work well?
+Actionmanarchives yeah, not a good idea. It goes all weird over time. Best to just leave those.
I tried that, I didn’t like it. There’s something odd when it catches the light and the colour is slightly different. And there’s no satin sheen on Sharpie covered areas.

For the BETATRON box, what about creating an "internal box" out of a stronger card-stock to slip inside the box to add support and re-shape the vintage box?
+OIFEagle That is worth doing on larger boxes as they tend to collapse with their own weight.

What about color matching ?? any pointers??? I have a big cardboard store display from 1977 and has a whited out area from tape residue removal.
Just aquired a war of the daleks game with a rough lid. Going to have a go at restoring it.

Thank you again for the great advice!
Great instructions! Goo Gone removes old tape residue as well. And placing a piece of parchment paper between the box and the iron works better than a tea towel. 😉
The only draw back to Goo Gone is that it can leave an oily residue stain if it ends up on a non coated or non gloss surface.
The plastic coating is a Matt laminate to keep the damp out and stop the colour running. Also stops the heavy ink coverage from cracking on the edges when it's die cut to shape and assembled.
+paulsenior33 Thanks for the info. It just means you need to be a bit more careful when ironing.
So gummed tape is the key. I like it.
I have some carrying case inserts I'm going to try to iron flat. Thank you

What temperature/setting should the iron be at?
Medium hot. Depends if the cardboard has a plastic coating on not as you don't want to melt that.
How come the lighter fluid does not absorb into the cardboard itself or damage the ink?
It evaporates very quickly.
Thanks for this vid Dave! Really glad you had a go at box restoration . It's hard to find tips on the net for how to do it
Any tips on repairing the clear plastic on Star Wars figures packaging?
Which package are you looking to fix?
@@toypolloi
The clone wars ahsoka cw44
That's a blister card? What's happened to it?
@@toypolloi
Yes it is. There is a split in the plastic blister. Do you know how I could fix it?
Could you possible "steam" the boxes to re-shape them?
+OIFEagle You could try. It may warp them more.
Eagle, I've had success with steaming. As long as the box was flattened out and weighted down uniformly and left to dry for a long time.
I have found that tape (Picture framer’s tape) to be very effective. Also bookbinders PVA. Especially for the little bits that sit out at corners.
Great video, I have some PC computer game cardboard boxes in need of a repair so this video is great to find/see! Quick Question: how long does the tape last - is there a big brand we could look for that will last for years and years before the glues stops sticking and the tape falls off?

How thick is the cardboard? If it is quite thick, you could insert something into the card. Some thin plastic, to strengthen the joins.
Toy Polloi it’s “chip board” from 1964, so a very thick cardboard designed to be bent repeatedly by a child. The problem is that the chipboard is covered in the paper design. I like that thin plastic idea, I’m worried I wouldn’t be able to get the paper up to insert it though.

good tips, could be useful for repairing old GI Joe coffin boxes.

Not easy as you tend to damage the box more than the pen mark in the first place. There are plenty of tips around for doing this. But I tend to leave it as is.
Well, heck. I suppose it can add character.
What are the options to try and clean it? If I find a successful method shall I share it?
What about using WD-40 in place of lighter fluid? Or other substitutes?
Lighter fluid works the best, so stick with that. WD40 is really smelly and leaves an oily residue.
thank you for this video. and would you know a place to where i can get that paper tape?
I bought this off ebay. Loads of sellers stock it.
Toy Polloi thank you.

I use tooth paste to remove ink from Lego Bricks.. But never tried on paper.

why didn't you use wood glue on the outside corners? it dries clear and the cardboard hardens up

Hello Toy Polloi, what are the measurements on that roll of gummed tape Your using in the vid, 47mm or 57mm?
+MadMark2006 47mm I think. You can use the bigger size if you have more space.
