Na Alii was composed by Samuel Kuahiwi in 1928 and pays tribute to Hawaii’s departed chiefs. The song tells two famous sayings. The first saying is Kamehameha the Great’s Law of the Splintered Paddle that guaranteed safe passage for women, children, and the infirm. The second saying is Kamehameha II’s statement that became Hawaii’s motto. One of Hawaii’s first state holidays is June 11 Kamehameha Day to honor the king that united the islands in 1810.
