Kasey Chambers' interpretation of Eminem's Lose Yourself is amazing! I agree with you that she puts so much emotion into the song. What a phenomenal artist!
Kasey started her solo career in 1998, after 12 years with her family group Dead Ringer Band. In 2001, she released her hit single Not Pretty Enough(from her 3rd studio album); it was a commentary on the reluctance of mainstream radio stations towards playing her music, as Kasey refused to be pigeon-holed as just a country singer. Kasey will from time-to-time include other musical style to influence her writing. Kasey has released 12 studio albums along with multiple hit singles. In 2017,she released Ain't No Little Girl; which is said to answer questions raised by Not Pretty Enough, and has a blues/jazz influence to it.
Kasey is an Aussie country/folk music legend. Youngest ever artist inducted into our ARIA Hall of Fame, a woman who has spent her whole life in the industry. A woman who has struggled to gain recognition, a woman who is struggling even 40+ years later to keep her place in Australian music and beyond. Her first solo album “The Captain” received massive acclaim for Kasey’s artistry but it was still not received well on a commercial basis. “Not Pretty Enough” was a massive hit but was a song that was Kasey’s reaction to the music industry bigwigs who thought that artists should look a certain way. This reimagining of Lose Yourself is the culmination of Kasey’s work during the Covid lockdown. She has lived these lyrics, she has been boo’d offstage, she has had to fight for every single recognition! Although we have still not heard Eminem/Marshall’s actual reaction to this version (even 2+ years later), Kasey was given permission to record and release her version. ❤ Kasey’s band is phenomenal and her Dad, Bill, features on slide in this. In my opinion, this is Kasey’s song now…it doesn’t belong to Em anymore! 😂 Not to mention…who else would have the guts to shred a banjo like a guitar like Kasey does!! Plus the fact that she kept Em’s cadence and lyrics, albeit much slowed down. ❤😂 So damned jealous that I wasn’t in Newcastle at that performance! Kasey is always 100%+ on form in her lives. ❤
She has done the most correct interpretation of the song ie: in 2 parts because that's how it's written. 1st part is in the 3rd person "HIS/HE " 2nd is in the 1st person.
She's an incredibly talented, hard working & critically acclaimed artist here, but has often had to fight to get the mainstream recognition that she deserves. Hence why this song resonates so much with her. It's his words, their shared story, told her way. She's alt/country, so when exploring her back catalogue, you'll get the passion in so many songs, but not as much of the powerful rock element ending like here, if that's what you're expecting or wanting to see.
I was listening to 'the Fairy Voice Mother" doing an analysis of this song, and she identified the voice technique as a break, while using twang. I've heard it called a couple of other things, but I think they were incorrect. If you want to hear her detailed analysis, search for 'fairy voice mother kasey chambers'.
Where Eminem's rap song reflects his life struggles; Kasey's country/rock ballad reflects her struggles, both personal and professional. Where Eminem's rap approach is more reactive; Kasey's version is more emotive.
This is what Kasey did with her time during covid lockdowns. She deconstructed and reconstructed this to suit her style and voice, and really shows how artistic she is. You should listen to an original song of Kaseys, called "Ain't No Little Girl" It's fantastic, and really shows her talents.
This performance was part of an intimate concert, where the theatre can only accommodate just over 1400 people; there is very little room to move around too much, as the seating fixed. The video for this performance was made out of the audiences mobile phone footage, as this was not a recorded concert.
That’s not Nash Chambers on guitar, it’s Brandon Dodd, her main guitarist for at least 12 years - you need to listen to Ain’t No Little Girl (a live version of- I like paste studios version but there are others) and ‘Not Pretty enough’ her breakthrough hit and ‘The Captain’ off her first solo albuum - and the rest….
They didn't have a recording of the show at first, so they put out a request for all her fans to send them their phone recordings and they put this video together from all of the videos sent to them.
Kasey has lived the song. As a young Aussie superstar with big live audiences, she was totally snubbed by radio and tv. She wrote her song, " Ain't I Pretty Enough " about that industry rejection and finally got accepted by the industry. Is still the youngest recipient of a Grammy Award.....our own version of the Grammies.
We don't have Grammy awards - Kasey has won - 1 x AIR award (Australian Independent Record Awards ) 10 x APRA awards (Australasian Performing Right Association) 14 x ARIA awards (Australian Record Industry Association) 24 x Golden Guitars (Country Music Awards of Australia) 1 x Lifetime achievement award (Australian Women in Music Awards) 1 x NLMA award (National Live Music Awards) 1 x Global Country Artist award from the U.S. Country Music Association 1 x Vanguard award from the Americana Music Awards
Another Kasey song? Really depends on what you want. Her normal wheelhouse is country/folk/bluegrass, with the occasional outlier. As you've discovered, Kasey is able to teasr her heart out on stage and let everyone share her emotions. I'll give you three options, depending on the emotion you want. 'Not Good Enough' - came out of the frustration of getting success, but having all the radio stations refuse to play her songs. She saw this as 'her song' during her early years. 'Aint No Little Girl' - I suppose a 'break-up' song, she considers this as 'her song' now. Recommend the live, PBS version done at 'Underground Blues'. 'Nullarbor Song - (Live)' - covering homesickness. there's not a lot of copies of this song on the 'net, so I'll give you the link here. th-cam.com/video/hy0LsznX59A/w-d-xo.html Enjoy.
I loved the song and she definitely had my attention the entire time. Sorry you found it underwhelming. It's not easy sitting in front of a camera in front of the world and verbalizing things you normally keep to yourself. I'm sure it will get easier but I don't want to force anything. Also, like the music we all listen to, these reactions are very subjective and I understand that, completely. I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
That would be all good if the whole point of your video wasn't that it was a reaction video 😂 No big deal though,.was just making an honest observation.
Eminem is the only rap I'll budge on. (If you like a good cover, check out Tori Amos' cover of "Bonnie and Clyde '97". Maybe with the lights on.) This is certainly an interesting take. The great thing about covers is that you can stretch them any which way. (Ever hear Type O Negative's cover of "Black Sabbath"? It takes a while.) I wouldn't recognise this without listening to the lyrics. This was a good one.
I chuckled that you were surprised by her age. You DO realize Eminem is your age, yeah? (It was a friendly, non judgemental chuckle. No offense intended... hell, I'm 68, so... LOL)
I'm not sure what you mean... I loved this cover. 🤷🏻♀ I felt like she put so much into this performance and that really hit me. This reaction was at the beginning of my reaction journey... it felt very strange to sit in front of a camera and have to verbalize feelings I normally keep to myself so perhaps that is what you're seeing (or not seeing). While it's gotten much easier the more I do it... I won't ever pretend, overreact or put on an act of some kind just to get views or what have you. If I didn't like her, the performance, or the song, I would have said so in the video.
@@TheRealMommaOG sorry didn’t mean to offend and maybe just cos you were nervous but it just felt monotonal and uninspired. Sorry if that wasn’t your intention and I’m sure things will get easier and more natural. Keep up the efforts and apologies again
@@shauns5680 no need for apologies, no hard feelings at all. You are allowed to have an opinion and these kinds of things can be difficult to hear sometimes, but if I don't take them personally they can actually be helpful. Thank you for that nd sorry if I bit your head off. lol 😅😅

I was in tears the first time I heard this rendition. And the second.
Kasey Chambers' interpretation of Eminem's Lose Yourself is amazing! I agree with you that she puts so much emotion into the song. What a phenomenal artist!
You need to hear her song , " Ain't no little girl " 😉👍
I've watched several vocal coaches and stage performance coaches and what she does with her voice during that verse, they all called "crying"
'keening' is the correct musical terminology. She throws in a bit of yodel there as well. She literally has all of the vocal tricks.
She still works with her dad. He is playing the lap steel guitar on this song. The one in the big hat.😊
That's what you call leaving your soul there on the stage
Thankyou Marshall
💯♥️🇦🇺
Incredible cover! Kasey is a phenomenon!
It's a lap steel ,and that's her father playing it he is often in her band.
That's her father on slide guitar.
Thank you for your insights and appreciative comments! Kasey's cover is one of a kind! What an extraordinary interpretation of the song!
