      I'd echo that. Plus I appreciate the promotion of your engineering reports. Being a retired engineer myself I know first hand the amount of time, effort and money is required to generate these. Vehicle manufacturers and suppliers that want to survive long-term need to produce higher quality and lower cost EV products. Undoubtedly your reports will be valuable in their meeting that objective.

    I love Sandy's videos. He never shies away to say whether something is a good idea or not, and he explains why, and what the impact is, or how it could be done differently. He doesn't just present a bullet list of findings, you can actually feel the amount of experience he brings in to a topic. Quite enlightening!

      Yes, I like the other presenters, but they need to give more evaluations. Since we’re not in the field it’s hard to know what to do with a bare description. Is it good, is it bad, is it innovative, is it standard, is there a better way of doing it?

    • @airheart1
      @airheart1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@juliahello6673 I find the other presenters are usually pretty good at elaborating on what other methods have been used and whether they see what their looking at as a positive or negative.. you don't get them from the others? I won't say it's 100%.. but my memory says they have been doing pretty darn good at it imo

    Outstanding episode. I took delivery of 2022 MSLR in March and am I right to assume that it has the same battery configuration to the MS Plaid? I have been blown away with how efficient my new car is compared with my previous 2015 MS85D. I originally signed up for Plaid but reconfigured to LR after seeing reviews and accepting that a 0-60 of 3.1 seconds was more than enough for me and did not need the third motor to give me the faster acceleration. I love my new car!

  • @paulcummings55

    Nice explanation of how the different battery constructions are done for specific purposes, and reminder of how to be flexible in your design- when to carry the same things over, and when to make them different. I really look forward to both the Model Y teardown from here in Austin, and your trip to IDRA. As always, thanks guys for making the engineering accessible to even non-engineers like myself!

    I did alot of roadtripping in my Plaid X this spring. When supercharging in 80-90 degree weather Inwould notice the other Teslas' cooling fans screaming amd mine was pretty silent. I guess it is a mix of the larger radiator and different cooling.

    The company I used to work for sold robotic battery testers to Tesla. I worked a bit on the model 3 testers in Giga Reno. We ran 1A of current from the cell through the bond wires to the collector plates and measured the voltage drop. You should see witness marks from the tester's probes on the cells and collector plate. They had a pretty sweet semi-automatic rework station to illuminate (with a visible-light laser) indicted bondwires for manual inspection and rework. I know we had testers in San Jose also, but I never got there to check them out, though I think the idea is similar. I don't know if that company still supplies testers to Tesla (it's a demanding customer!), but I'd be curious if you can see the witness marks on the S and X collector plates and cells still.

    Ride and drive on the way back from Texas.
    Seatbelt retractor should be removed from B-pillars. Not having to cut a hole in the B-pillars will make them stronger improving side impact strength and roof crush strength. It will also give the crash bars in the doors something stronger to push against in a front or rear collision. Seatbelt retractor should be under it in the seat like I have seen in some Chevy pickups.

    Hello and thanks again for yet another good teardown analyze! I’m working for a big oem with battery testing in lab. I just would like to ephesize that I would be very interested in knowing what type of 18650 cells they are using. I agree, that the new configuration with more cells in parallel and extended monitoring via the bms is important factors, but according to what I have seen so far for (let’s say at least 3-5 years back) older generations of model S like P85D or P100D, the cells was clearly on the limit for what current you could extract without getting crazy voltage drop (claimed 700hp+ was perhaps in the reality more around or below 600hp). Yes, I know, the plaid still oberheats, but clearly it would be very interesting to see what they have done with theese cells, because before I can guarantee that if the older cell would be used, you could NOT run 402m under 10 seconds. So to conclude: how in the world did did they succeed to more or less double the power and still maintain the energy density?! I cannot understand why more people are not interested in that question.

      A interesting comparision would be to just compare the voltage drop with previous 18650 cells (or model 3 2170 cells) let’s say just discharge with 5c from 4V to 3,5V and then compare voltage drop and temperature. Yes, I know, it’s maybe asking for a bit too much, but I would certainly be interested.... Now, time for me to shut up :)

    Impressive so far , a VERY hard cell to Crack.
