    I lived in Japan for 3 years, Yokota Air Base, back in the early 70's and took the first made bullet train. It only went about 150mph but it was a thrill. Back then Japan was cheap, 360 yen to the USD. I loved it. Great memories.

    • @esperago
      @esperago 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      May I ask a question? And I ask as a supporter of the men and women of the Armed Services, not a modern hippie detractor: If you were stationed there in the 70s, that'd be roughly 25-30 years after the dropping of American atomic bombs. I've always thought it peculiar how Japan and the US have been bed fellows ever since (although I'm glad of it). In the 70s as an American soldier, were the citizens not upset with you? It stands to reason that they'd want you out of their country. At the very least, it seems like it wouldn't be the best, socially speaking, for an American in Japan just a handful of years later. What was your experience? And your thoughts on this matter? From what you say above, you had a pleasant time, so things must have been okay but I can't figure out why. History books don't cover this topic, either. If you're willing to offer an answer, I'm willing to listen. Thanks!

    • @mikee2
      @mikee2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@esperago Thanks for the question. I was in my early 20's when stationed their. I didn't talk much to the older Japanese people. Actually, the only elderly person I really had any contact with was my landlord, Mr. Kodama. I lived off base. We never brought up World War 2.
      It was kind of like when I was a kid. I had an uncle who served in the Marines in WW 2 and when I asked him about the war, all he said "it was not good".
      The younger Japanese kids who I talked to were not familiar with WW 2. It wasn't in their history books. The Japanese are a very proud people and the loss of WW 2 was obviously devastating to their pride.
      The United States helped Japan rebuild. I never saw any signs "Yankee go home". Of interest, I live in Costa Rica and I have seen signs here against Americans. I have seen actual signs "Yanque go home". I say, ok, we'll go home, and we'll take with us McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Burger king, Dairy Queen, and many more. The US supports Costa Rica but the young kids don't see it that way.
      It was the same in Japan, the US supported Japan and helped them become a first world country.
      I loved their customs. In the big 2 story department stores their was always a young beautiful girl at the bottom of each escalator, with a white cloth cleaning off the moving handrail.
      The language was a real problem as not many Japanese spoke any English. The young kids on college campuses spoke some English and I hung out at a lot of college campuses.
      I could go on and on. Thanks again.

      I don't know why Japan always make its train's windows so small, 2:12 only 50% of the size of China's, like the airplane, should make it much bigger to have a better view. 🤔🤔🤔Personal opinion, another issue is 2:37 there is a step at the door to up and down the train, why don't make it the same level? make life easier. 🤔🤔🤔

J'ai adoré le moment où la voiture dépasse votre shinkansen 😁 en tout cas ne perdez pas votre sens de l'humour. @2:01, you can see the rails on the left *are* dedicated shinkansen rails. Shinkansen tracks (143.5cm) are wider than the normal JR rails (106.7) to the right. KQ and some other trains in Japan also use a wider gauge (137.2 or 143.5cm).

    That is amazing how the Japanese trains are always on time with their scheduling. There might be some delays at times, but seems they are very good at getting train riders there on time.
    Can't say the same for our Amtrak scheduling in the US. There are always some delays going from Chicago to California, and some delays can be into the hours long. But you do eventually get to your destinations.
    Thanks for the video review.
