  • Paul Morphy's Opera Game is one of the greatest chess games of all time. Playing two amateurs, the Duke of Brunswick and Count Isouard, Morphy sacrifices nearly all of his chess pieces to achieve a famous and spectacular checkmate. In this video, we explain every move for chess beginners.

    Not thrilled by the choice of board. I am not hating on the video for it, but I find 2d boards much easier to understand because there are no blocked lines of sight. Despite that, thank you for analyzing this amazing game.

    Sam, you produce the best chess videos. Clear, interesting, humorous without the silly prima Donna features. I’m a terrible chess player, never being able to reason well enough to see ahead. Your explanations are clear and engaging. Please continue to produce beginner videos like this.

    I enjoyed this very much. I graduated from Spring Hill College in 1980 where Paul Morphy graduated many years earlier and had the chance at 12 to be one of many hundreds of fans who played Bobby Fisher in a giant simultaneous chess match with something like 50 or 100 tables in Daley plaza. I lasted 29 moves and he asked how old I was. When I told him 12 he said I should definitely keep playing and work on my defense. Finding the statue dedicated to Paul Morphy in college was a delightful surprise. As was his constant references in Queen’s Gambit on Netflix.
    This was very will explain med and I applaud you for doing this because like Bobby Fisher’s appearance I think the movie has stimulated a lot of interest in chess in both young men and women. Chess notation is fine, but this kind of illustration is much more palatable for young people. Please keep it up!

    Great video Sam! Don't know how I missed it for so long. Only wish you had gone with the two dimensional board. But I love reviewing this game every so often.

    Like the way you explain the game. Slow down just a little and use 2D board would help us old people.

    Great content! If I'm not mistaken, this checkmate pattern is known as the Opera mate. The Morphy mate is a bishop on f6, rook on g1, and enemy king on h8 with enemy pawn on h7. I wonder if the Morphy mate also comes from one of Morphy's games.

    I kind of like the 3D board for the variety but I appear to be outvoted. A great deal of chess is visualization and the 3D forces you to ‘see’ the pieces a bit differently.
    Nice to see you covering this classic game. It’s important not only for instructional and entertainment purposes but part of chess’ rich history. I’ll be looking for more!

    You guys making these kind of videos should really make a short animation at the end (without even needing to comment) that recap the whole game from the start with like one move every 2 sec. I would really benefit from that I feel. Anyone else agrees?

    I have a naive question.... Who at the time in 1858 was recording these moves ? Was someone following Morphy in Europe and recording and publishing all his games ?

    11:57 wouldn't taking with the queen still have been better. Yeah, Black loses the queen for a rook, but Black was already up a rook before losing back the exchange on the previous move, so it would end up with Black having a rook and a knight for a queen, with no immediate mating threats.

    • @careyosoup274
      @careyosoup274 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      overall, delays the inevitable. after black plays QxB, white can insert Qb8+, followed with Qxe5+, instead of recapturing blacks Q right away. after the smoke clears black would end up losing his R on h8 (white would play bishop takes knight, to open up a path to it). In the end, it would be white with queen (and army of pawns), and black with a bishop and a few scattered pawns. overwhelming material advantage for white.
      2 factors to consider are that they missed the Q sac on b8, afterwards, to spot the mate. Q sacs come as a big surprise when they are dropped and players have trouble spotting opponents lines for them, and 2) greed. Amateur place too much value on their queens and will try hold on to them at a great cost.

    After Bg5 why didn't black play h6 and and g5, then play Bg7 and castle.

    • @georgemiller8325
      @georgemiller8325 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      After h6 white can play Bxf6 gxf6 (not Qxf6 as you need to cover b7) and long castle maintaining the winning position that was a result of Nf6.
