Why is there so much hatred directed to these Soviet planes? Compare them to similar western aircraft of the same era and technology wise, they are similar. These planes were simply designed for a different market with different needs along with different piloting and cultural traditions. Lets just all appreciate the diversity of aviation and calm the hatred
+Alejandro Tsang I was thinking exactly the same thing. They're still flying decades later. I bought this program just to see the old designs and how they operated & appreciate the willingness of the producers to record them for what is now a bygone era. Cubana no longer flies the IL-62 leaving only a tiny handful of carriers that do.
+Alejandro Tsang Best comment so far. Fantastic to see these videos of 60s & 70s designs kept flying. What choice did Cuba have in the circumstances? The tiller as steering wheel makes a lot of sense. The Russian & Ukrainian designs were very practical and tough. Still love a TU-154M engine noise
i love russkies flew with them several times, pilots are superior to any western one. No shit, most of them are ex airforce dudes and it shows, just look how they perfomig at air shows. Simply astonishing.
Maybe it's because 'Muricans are so butt-hurt for the fact that they can't even send their own astronauts to the ISS and have to use superior Russian design.
Because Most of them are either stolen from Western or European counterparts or just plain ugly, along with the fact that their manufacturing quality is questionable, just like everything else manufactured in Russia. When everyone gets paid the same there's no incentive to produce quality products. Soviet aircraft fly on very sketchy shoestring operations. That's why people hate them. Antonov is probably one of the only Soviet (obviously not Soviet now) aircraft manufacturers I trust, only because they're forced to keep their company reputable because of them having the largest plane in the world and all
I am a FANATIC of Cubana airlines, and Russian aircraft as of lately. This couldn't have been more a perfectly timed upload! Would love to see more of these types of videos.
Now THESE guys are airmen. No glass panel, just old school steam gauges. You'd think the airline could at least give them some kinda upgrade. Great video.
I flew on the IL-62M in 1987 from Warsaw, Poland to Montreal, Canada, it was a 9 hour flight and the captain let me sit in the cockpit for 4 hours of the flight. At that time i was 11 years old but i remember it like it was yesterday. The only thing i hated was the noise because i was sitting in the tail section right beside the engines. The plane i flew on crashed three weeks later while coming back for an emergency landing after it's engine exploded damaging the 3 out of 4 engines and cutting the lines for the control surfaces of the rudder and elevator, the only thing that worked was the trim tab for the elevator which gave the pilots some pitch control, unfortunately there was a fire in the tail, and just six miles from the runway it melted the plastic around the trim control cable leaving the pilots with zero control at which time it crashed. Otherwise the IL-62M was a beautiful aircraft, i really loved the look of it. LINK TO THE INFO ON THE CRASH: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LOT_Flight_5055
Exactly the IL62 is a mythic plane and loved by all lovers of the world aviation and you maybe never knew but they flew inhospitable and cruel routes that no plane even with GPS + fly TODAY 2017 remember that they assigned these routes to be Of the SOCIALIST block and they came and went to the degree that they never lost nigun il62 at sea in nigun ocean of the world but that such 707 AD-727 and are of the same litter were built only 166 il62 for all the intercontinental airlines of the block SOCIALIST imagines the history of flight the other accidents was by bad maintenance of the airline that flew them and the CUBANA by negligence of the captain of flight and take off with bad weather winds he was to blame (havana)
VLADYMIR PUTIN today 2017 and in 2013 is still accompanied by a ssu 13 IL62M of the presidential fleet and ex aeroflot 80s 90s of old observes that and cheka the technical file with the license plate and veras that are of the 80s almost all AIR KORYO flies 2 il62 From 1975 in full 2017
I wonder if people saying they would never fly on these planes have done any research or have any clue about safety records... they just repeat what they were told as kids while watching propaganda. This planes are beautiful and safe
Amazing video.., Cubana and Cuba in its best. beautifull, old but well treated. Only people with that much education can do it. IL-62 is so clean, so gracious...
The IL-62 is truly beautiful aircraft. It's too bad that Cubana has now retired them from passenger service and perhaps, all service now even. When I was last in Cuba, in Feb 2012, I did see a couple of IL-62 on the ground at Jose Marti, that were in long-term storage mode. Later, I saw two more IL-62's flying over Havana. Perhaps a few are being used for cargo service, or perhaps they were merely on a ferry flight to a storage facility. Regardless, the IL-62 is a truly beautiful airliner.
I flew on il-62m when i was 16 years old it was in 1991 LOT polish airlines flew from Warsaw Poland to Montreal Canada it would be my dream to fly on it again but not to many are in service any more.
Cuando Boeing lanzo al Mercado el 747 en 1968 con fuselaje ancho ellos seguian con sus fuselaje estrecho hasta bien entrada la decada de los 80 no cambiaron con el IL 86
That is just fantastic. Not too often do you get a stem to stern in & out overview of a classic "whistler" Ilyushin IL-62M That cockpit layount with the turquoise blue scheme reminds me a little of a 1950's/1960's Powerwagon dashboard
I've flown on Cubana many times....it's a great airline with great service and wonderful, knowledgeable and friendly staff. (message continued in the next post )
Although there's all sorts of old Russian jets still out there, bought by airlines that can't afford anything newer. With these planes, you have to be able to read the subtle nuances and pay attention to all 3,000 gauges in front of you. Flying was hard work back in the day. Which leads me to the point that these pilots, although from poorer nations, gain valuable experience rapidly because of this difficulty.
I have always wondered what the idea behind the big and small yokes was? I find it interesting that the yoke comes out of the panel, not the floor. Oh I see, it is a tiller....cool.
I can't believe it never occurred to me that cuban would use russian aircraft...it's so obvious...those cockpits are fucking awesome...the tractor at the beginning is a nice touch too haha
Any word when the Castros are gonna buy new planes? And do they really use dry ice in the AC systems? To keep the cabin cool? I flew on one of those "disco" flights before. And was even given Havana Club 7 year. For free! What a gig!
@hadabenz Two questions on the IL 62: 1/ What instruments are there on the navigator's panel that there aren't on the pilots'? 2/ Is the navigator a career long navigator, or is he a man building his hours to become a pilot? Can anyone answer me these 2 questions, please!
I noticed that the checklist for the IL 62 was printed in English and the crew gave their checks in English...was that just for the video or is it always that way in Cubana?
Well... But Cubana has had Boeing 737's, 757's and even 747's... I heard they have new Tupolev aircraft and they do have airbus. I'm mexican, not cuban... I like the truth to be told... the airline is not poor, the country may be... but not the airline... check their actual and historic fleet
As Will Givononame mentioned, two polish Il-62 crashed (first in 1980, second in 1987), as well third miraculously survived in (1990) - all because of same problem: scandalous deficiencies in production and quality control of Russian made engines. Remarkably, also Cubana's Il-62 looked death in the face because of same problems in 2008, during, thanks God, successful emergency landing at San Domingo. Search TH-cam for "flight 5055" which is Polish language Discovery Channel production (English subtitles) dramatization of 1987 disaster - make sure you seen end of part 8. You can also search TH-cam for "IL-62 En Santo Domingo" for account of aftermath of Cuban emergency landing. Very existence of Cuban incident proves that despise huge human life loss, Russians never fixed engine's problem till this very day. I worked on IL-62 in Polish Airlines. As it is unfeasible to think of any imaginable circumstances, I think its safe to say those planes are not threat to me. I will never fly IL-62M again. I do feel however if You are out of luck and happen to live in country which still operates them and might be prospective passenger of them, YOU DO HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW THE WHOLE TRUTH ABOUT THOSE PLANES.
FlyerKBOS So you mean that Western planes are perfect and never had any problems? Western engines do blow up, as with the Pratt&Whitney JT8D9-15 and 17, especially on take-off. Russian airplanes of that generation had generally better or similar reliability records than Western airplanes, if you discount pilot errors. TU-154 was mechanically safer than the B-727 for example. I know you hate Russians, but look at the statistics instead of the propaganda.
FlyerKBOS I think you forgot the Interflug's IL-62 Konig plane crash case, which was caused by a Manufactured electric wire issues that caused an in-flight fire and produced later a in-flight break-up.
Marc Landreville why don't you ask to the cubana pilots what they prefer to fly you can be sure they'll say Boeing how you gonna compare a Russian plane with a Boeing are you out of your mind?
Gets the job done, I Wonder if the American will help the Cubans improve on their airport infrastructure as well as new aircraft in the future now that Cuba is slowly allowing free trade ✌️
your dream can come true only with Cubana, because even in Russia this type of plane Il62 is not in service anymore. Only special forces use it for their work only.
Russian design, go figure. I still wouldn't get on one...I see with hydraulics off that big yoke in the -62 goes full right tilt...the tiller mounted on the yoke looks ridiculous. The baby three-holer lookalike at the end also looks like a cartoon airplane

Mehdi Abderezai A Russian pilot flies with his intuition, not with a computer unlike western pilots. It goes to show that these pilots are experienced. And just as well, these aircraft are designed to fly in RUSSIA, a country where it's almost always winter, and can land on unprepared or unpaved airfields. Can western passenger aircraft do that? No. Just a couple testaments to how rugged these aircraft are. They can also be with airlines for 30-40 years at a time, given they have proper maintenance. I have a gemini jets model il 62m
I have always fancied the aqua color of the instrument panel in the Russian birds.
Now THESE guys are airmen. No glass panel, just old school steam gauges. You'd think the airline could at least give them some kinda upgrade. Great video.
Spencer Maze but its four of them in there, not really harder than the 2 man set up

As an American, to see a part of Cuba in this manner was just amazing. Thank you, Just Planes!
Wow the Yak-42 is a real nice looking airplane. Sharp looking cockpit.
But noisy As Fuck
I wonder if people saying they would never fly on these planes have done any research or have any clue about safety records... they just repeat what they were told as kids while watching propaganda. This planes are beautiful and safe
Amazing video.., Cubana and Cuba in its best. beautifull, old but well treated. Only people with that much education can do it. IL-62 is so clean, so gracious...
They're huge because they are still controlled by wires and cables and the pilot also has to be strong. Even the tiller is huge.
Flown a few time with Cubana on their Yak-42's and their IL-96-300's love this airline and love Russian/Soviet planes, true feeling of flying.
The IL-62 is truly beautiful aircraft. It's too bad that Cubana has now retired them from passenger service and perhaps, all service now even. is a truly beautiful airliner.
As advanced as modern jets are, they'll never surpass the old soviet planes in looks.
Amazing...the nose-wheel steering wheel right on the control column. Most airliners use the side mounted 'tiller'....
I like the steering wheel at 3:23 instead of a tiller!
Ive flown on the VC-10, Trident and Dc-9 and absolutely adore them so I would love to get onboard one of the Russian equivalents.
Just love the radar at 4:08. I bet you could see the next seagull from 10 feet.
3:46 wow. That pull up was quick
hahhaah steering during taxi like a boss ahaha
Very nice video. Greetings from sunny Jamaica. (90 miles from Cuba)
I like that ground steering for the nose wheel in the middle for the il-62M, I've never seen that before.
I flew on il-62m when i was 16 years old it was in 1991 LOT polish airlines flew from Warsaw Poland to Montreal Canada it would be my dream to fly on it again but not to many are in service any more.
at the end il62 is a beautiful aircraft!
Tal vez, pero parece una mala copia del 727.
Luke Snowmaker no it isn´t
Cuando Boeing lanzo al Mercado el 747 en 1968 con fuselaje ancho ellos seguian con sus fuselaje estrecho hasta bien entrada la decada de los 80 no cambiaron con el IL 86
it's pretty fuckin ugly. It's an autistic copy of the Vickers VC-10
Mas bien es del VC-10 de Vickers....
this plane is just fantastic no fancy computers just the good old basic what flying supposed to be
That is just fantastic. Not too often do you get a stem to stern in & out overview of a classic "whistler" Ilyushin IL-62M That cockpit layount with the turquoise blue scheme reminds me a little of a 1950's/1960's Powerwagon dashboard
this is pure aviation. because you don't see a NAVIGATOR anymore!! I'd love to fly a Cubana IL-62 or an Air Koryo IL-62...
I've flown on Cubana many times....it's a great airline with great service and wonderful, knowledgeable and friendly
staff. (message continued in the next post )

I've never seen this part of the world, Great Video Justplanes!
Used to turn these on the YYZ ramp in Fifteen Years ago . Many memories crawling around the belly offloading full flights.
Yo monte en uno de estos de la Habana a Santiago de Cuba en 1994.
good video, the AN-24 actually has a really nice cabin
@issueagent There is an extra steering wheel, which is only visually connected to the yoke. They have nothing to do with each other actually.
Nice Enjoyed this Thanks Justplanes and Cubana Airlines.
I have always wondered what the idea behind the big and small yokes was? I find it interesting that the yoke comes out of the panel, not the floor. Oh I see, it is a tiller....cool.
Muito bem produzido este vídeo valeu gostei
glass cockpit what's that? look how he steers during the taxi
planes with souls ... :)
I was a little kid when i fly in IL-62 last time. May be 20 years ago.
love the tiller wheel on the actual yoke
Excellent video!
Thanks for posting. I enjoyed it.
how old are that video? it's from 90's?
nice video..........thankyou cubana.......thank yu castro
That is one badl*ss plane, even down to the sound of those engines. The service on that flight looks better than some of the US airlines.
IL 62 is so beautiful
Nosewheel tiller on the main stick...interesting. Never seen that before.
the literally push back TRACTOR
I can't believe it never occurred to me that cuban would use russian aircraft...it's so obvious...those cockpits are fucking awesome...the tractor at the beginning is a nice touch too haha

Damn yes! Beatifull plane all the sides.
Nothing better than your next flight being brought to you by a tractor!
@Justplanes-what's the city that they landed in at the end of this video?? Great job!!
@issueagent You can see that the tiller is in the yoke but not connected to it.
Why the yokes on all these planes so huge? I can't figure that one out!
so what planes do they fly now in Cuba ????
They had to call farmer brown for the tug service.
no, it's sinor jisus
Does the yoke control the nose steering as well? (As seen from video)
Son muy viejos pero vuelon muy bien....
flown with these once funny experience
I noticed that the checklist for the IL 62 was printed in English and the crew gave their checks in English...was that just for the video or is it always that way in Cubana?
Incredible plane, look like it was built like a flying train.
tiller in the yoke? good idea!
I never knew the IL62s cockpit were translated into English
Is there a type rated IL 62 pilot reading this who can answer me some questions on the IL 62? Please contact me! Thanks.
I loved the flight attendant...
Yes, yoke out of the panel, just like a Cessna 172!
Wow!I see Russian flight attendants in first flight by IL-62! Is it right?
Well... But Cubana has had Boeing 737's, 757's and even 747's... I heard they have new Tupolev aircraft and they do have airbus. I'm mexican, not cuban... I like the truth to be told... the airline is not poor, the country may be... but not the airline... check their actual and historic fleet
Im sorry but i would not fly in a such old outdated plane. How old was the first plane shown?
i love this video tnx for share
im a American i plain going to cuba for vacation
Grasias!

What about the Short-lived Tu-144???that thing did fly for long time than the Concorde???
Think again.

Fascinating Aircrafts:)
Nice end to the video landing in Guatemala city.
Did you mean IL-62?
Our planes are the best))) Hello from Vladivostok)))
they have tu-154's as well, russia flys boeing and airbus aircraft now as well
These planes are so old fashion cockpits
Dude in the middle row watching that butt @ 5:19. Awesome vid. Looking forward to buying the full version.
That's also a frickin' weird plane... Four engines and a tail wheel!
Gets the job done, I Wonder if the American will help the Cubans improve on their airport infrastructure as well as new aircraft in the future now that Cuba is slowly allowing free trade ✌️
Tupolev??
that has to be the fasted autopilot ever.
This must've been an American liaison-type flight seeing as the FA is american and all the flight deck is in English
Woh four engines on the back.. like a rocket ...:)
yak-42 clobber my favorite!
Even Orval & Wilbur laughed at that first plane
your dream can come true only with Cubana, because even in Russia this type of plane Il62 is not in service anymore. Only special forces use it for their work only.
hello well done thanks
@7:27 Who needs air conditioner when fans are sufficient enough. LOL
Nice video, all those Russian planes perfectly flying over Cuba skies.
Those are REAL steam gauges in that cockpit
DO THEY REALLY USE A TRACTOR FOR PUSHBACK. WHAT THE HELL
One hell of a loud plane
0:24 i first thougt it was the nose gear...
Russian design, go figure. I still wouldn't get on one...I see with hydraulics off that big yoke in the -62 goes full right tilt...the tiller mounted on the yoke looks ridiculous. The baby three-holer lookalike at the end also looks like a cartoon airplane
Russian design= rugged aircraft.
GTA Kid Did you know it was possible to convey your message using nicer language ;)
I once flew on one of these Russian planes, the crew invited me to the cockpit and it was a shocker. The flew the entire 3 hours manually. The auto pilot was NoOp. +GPlaysGTA Online (GPlaysGTAOnline) You've been watching too many Communist propaganda videos kid, calm down.
