      Reivers have quite literally sucked since their inception...
      They had one period in 9th where they had the "deepstrike-shoot-and-move" gimmick with the Phobos Lt. (maybe they still do) that gave them a very short charge-range when they deployed, so they could easily tie up a bunch of stuff while your army approached, but in 10th they're more of an annoyance than an actual threat in melee since most stuff can just pack up and leave (or just shoot them) anyway.

    I think for guard the wyvern deserves a mention. It’s 110 points for a 2d6 twin linked mortar that gives a -1 to hit for infantry units it hits. Its damage is almost nothing and for 10 points more you could get 6 mortars and 6 more copy’s of the blast rule. It’s just a terrible unit.

    • @icklemoo
      @icklemoo หลายเดือนก่อน

      the debuff though is quite good on a key unit , that -1 to hit in either shooting/melee could be pretty key in some matches but yeah its over costed

    • @fendelphi
      @fendelphi หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Quite a few things here:
      1) Durability. The Wyvern is much more durable than the mortar teams. More toughness and better save, and you dont lose firepower by losing 2 wounds.
      2) Speed. You can move it if/when needed. Having M10 rather than M6 is a big difference and gives it more of an active role that you can utilize.
      3) Accuracy. It has a base of 4+ rather than a 5+.
      4) Reliable damage. Having both Twin-linked and Ignores Cover helps with actually getting damage through even with indirect fire.
      5) Additional weapons. A Hunterkiller Missile and either a Heavy Flamer or Heavy Bolter for support fire is not bad options to have.
      6) The debuff. Forcing a -1 to hit on all attacks until the start of your next turn is pretty good as far as debuffs goes.
      7) Not just infantry. It applies its debuff to anything not a monster or vehicle. That means mounted units and beasts as well as infantry.
      So I would say it is not a terrible unit at all. Not high tier or anything, but if you are looking for some reliable and durable fire support on a budget with a suppression debuff to help you out, it does it fairly well.

    Last game I played daemons I took a squad of pink horrors attached to it. The Changecaster triggered its battleshock ability 3 times against necron warriors lead by overlords (Pretty much every turn it could shoot). Those 2 necron squads were wiped by the horrors, with necrons unable to use stratagems. Also dealt MW because of shadow in the warp. Then fought in melee against a squad of Skhorpek destroyers with a lord attached, for control of the mid board. They remained alive till turn 5, never lost the objective.

    Something I've been thinking about with the Stormsurge, one thing that could help make it more viable is give it and maybe the Ta'unar the ability to have two spotted units while guided, each requiring a separate observer unit. That way it can split fire between a tanky target and a softer one without being heavily penalized in the hit rolls, but would require a significant investment by taking up two observer units (or one full Pathfinder team's guiding) that would otherwise be guiding something else. You get 2 bs 3 multimeltas (2 attacks each )if you have a tech leading them and you get to uppy downy. The tech marine does lose the lone op which sucks but you can try and hide in ruins while buffing a dread turn 1. Again, not great, but I'd argue it isn't terrible. Personally I'd take that in a specific list over transport and the ven dread.

    • @fendelphi
      @fendelphi หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, I dont think they are terrible either, provided they are used correctly. It seems that they were rated only as "a way to score points with a cheap unit"(which is why they were compared to Agents of the Imperium units), but were not consider for how they actually work when a Techmarine leads them.
      So many ways to utilize them with a Techmarine. Take 2 Plasma Cannons and put them in a Rhino. Then you do not have to worry too much about the Hazardous and can deal good damage to infantry and elite units. Or the Multi-Meltas. Or use the Stratagem that allows you to Deep Strike as close as 3"(easy to get within Melta range that way).
      Combine them with a 5-model Strike Squad, and you can use the Servitors to tank high AP weaponry(they have a 6+ Inv. save) so that you do not lose the more expensive Grey Knights. It is also a powerful combo in melee. The Techmarine is quite a beast with all those extra attacks, and 2 of the Servitors have a single S6, AP-2 Dam3 attack. So combined with the Grey Knights, you have 2 flamers total(overwatch potential), a bunch of medium powered weaponry(Multi-Melta or Plasma Cannons) and quite a bit of melee power as well. And it cost the same as a regular 10 model squad(4 Servitors=50 pts, Tech=70, Strike Squad=120, so 240, same as 10 models of strike squad).

    Sloppity Bilepiper is quite useful in a list that specializes in battleshock. Example;
    DG list with the -1 OC/LD debuff and some plagueburst crawlers. This allows you to force units in nearly every phase to take battleshocks, add in some models that cause units to take mortals should they fail(The Droning enhancement), and something like the Noxious blightbringer making those tests fail more often and you have a fairly respectable mortal wounds spam, as well as board control.

    I'll actually disagree on the Forgefiends for World Eaters. 3 D3 blast weapons can put a huge hole in an opponent's attempt to screen you out or clear huge model count units fairly easily. And turn 2 onwards, if they're close to Angron, you can give them full rerolls to hit. Also, any infantry that gets tagged has to take a Battleshock test.
    They're also very nasty combined with maulerfiends, since they can usually guarantee the +2 to charge and +1 to hit will be active for them.

    So, I think a fun video, or at least poll question, might be "which index faction could most benefit from an additional detachment?" It seems to have done wonders for the DEldar, and I personally hoped it would be a more frequent thing, at least when they did balanced data slates of this most recent scale. As a fan of both Guard and Eldar; two factions that I feel took big hits in how they play, or which units to play with, I feel like either one could really do with something more, official from GW, depicting how THEY envision people playing, instead of just continuing to nerf their most played units, or beat down rules/mechanics that they feel have become inconvenient in the current meta. Guard have changed, but they did finally drive what is likely the last nail in the coffin for indirect fire artillery spam, despite that having been a lot of their prior play strength. Some if their troops, and definitely some of the tanks, look a fair bit better, but they also have numerous things that can't use Born Soldiers 2.0 at all, and apart from tank spam keeping tournament turns shorter, I'm not sure what second way they want people to play Guard, though I assume that their codex is distant. Eldar are much the same. I don't think they are doing poorly, but a lot of what this "movement wins battles" army got was nerfs to its more mobile units, and since their detachment rule had been trouble, at times, it might be nice to see what alternatives they might be thinking about, since they eventually HAVE to get more, and thus different rules.
    Blah blah blah. I wish that a few more factions could receive a second way to play, now that so many factions do have their codex, and two out of five new good ways to play. I am curious, though, which factions other people would hope for the most?

    EDIT: just learned that the rules are not written the way I thought they were to allow multiple observer units for one guided unit and have somehow been misreading them since the start of 10th. So much for any of my fun plans before assembling my more competitive list...😢

    Reivers have been laughed at since the launch of them. For those who don't know, they had an internal idea of making phobos marines their own army, which is why they released a special restricted detachment for them with their own stratagems and the like. If you've ever wondered why Primaris have so many units and so little variety, this is why. Because GW let their (lack of) imagination run wild and not tell anyone what their idea was, except for in an obscure youtube warhammer channel podcast that no one listens to.
    How do you fix them? Make them more than cost effective. It's okay to not balance units according to points, it's actually exceptionally narrow minded not to, especially between factions where layers of rules apply that give them a different final 'real' worth. It's okay for Reivers to be scary infantry hunters that come down anywhere and viciously harass blobs.

    I feel like defilers have been overpriced for a very long time. they used to cost 150 back in 3.5, I think the same in 4th, but after that they bumped them 40 points higher... and for what, exactly? yeah, I guess it's a (bad at) melee capable leman russ with shittier firepower and armour, and the faction's only source of ordnance until vindicators were introduced to the faction [hush iron warriors]. Back in 3.5, you could give them mutated hull, which let them get +1 to all armour facings. You could also give them parasitic infestation which let them regrow weapons and such on a roll. You had to pay for these upgrades, and this would raise the points cost to around 225 for both (I think?) -- but it was both worth it, and costly. Whatever buffs they've gotten (I think they can regenerate wounds now on a 5+?) isn't worth it. it's unfortunate... I want to run chaos zilla with them. It just wouldn't work.
