    RULES:
    The rules are the same as regular chess, except for these changes. For a refresher of those rules, check out this video. Each piece, except for the king, is designed to be able to combine with any other piece. To combine pieces, on your turn, for your move, you are allowed to join your own pieces together by moving them onto the same space. Only two pieces may be combined at a time, and you are not allowed to combine your pieces with your opponent’s pieces. A piece may travel any legal distance to combine but a piece may not pass-through other pieces. You are allowed to combine the same types of pieces if you want. The king may never combine with another piece.
    Combined pieces may move as a single piece with the movement power of either piece. For example, if you combine a rook and a bishop, the combined piece can move either like a rook or a bishop. You are allowed to split pieces by only moving 1 of the combined pieces away with that piece’s normal movement, any distance that is legal. You may combine a piece from a split in the same move. You are not allowed to split a piece and have it move with the other piece’s ability. When you split a bishop, that bishop is confined to whatever color it is currently on regardless of the color that bishop began the game on.
    There is no limit to the number of times you can combine or split, and you may begin combining on your very first turn. Individual pieces, combined pieces, and splitting pieces may move to capture any other piece like normal. When you capture an opponent’s combined piece, both of their joined pieces are removed from the board.
    If a combined piece containing a pawn makes it to the far side of the board, both joined pieces are removed from the board and promoted to a single queen. If you split a pawn from a combination to get promoted, only the pawn is removed from the board. You are not allowed to en passant a combined piece that contains a pawn unless the joined pieces are both pawns.
    You are allowed to castle with a combined rook so long as that rook hasn’t moved yet and you follow all the other normal rules for castling. If your pawn moves to any of your starting pawn spaces, it regains its ability to perform the initial 2-step move. The first player to checkmate their opponent, wins.

    I like this chess mode because you can still play it on a regular chess board by just putting two pieces on the same tile. The fact putting a combined pawn back to it's original line can allow you to do the double movement is also kinda interesting and can set up interesting setups.

    Combined pieces are such a huge threat to strategize around, since you can't predict whether they'll capture combined or just split one half off and retain part of the original threat on the board. Rook+Bishop is basically OG Queen but it can split up as a threat. Queen+Knight is just a ball of threatening space on the board with threat tentacles reaching everywhere, and it can just get orbited by the knight instead of giving up a good position to snag a short range threat. So many layers to think around at a high level of play.

    Reminds me of a version I picked up in a games expo called Paco Sako, taking an opponents piece merges them instead and both players can move the combined peice according to the rules for the half they own meaning that the board never actually loses peices. the interesting part is that if you take a merged peice then it replaces your other peice in the merge which then immedietly moves out of the square according to its normal movement rules. this can be chained and can lead to some VERY unexpected checkmates.

    • @Pahjx
      @Pahjx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I've never heard of Paco Sako Chess before. The best thing about it is that you can use a Chessplus set to play it!

    • @callummccleave5843
      @callummccleave5843 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Pahjx It was made by Felix Albers who I met at a Board game expo and got a copy, he refered to it as 'peace chess' (no idea if thats a direct translation) and designed it based on peace, friendship, and collaberation. while friendship isn't quite what I feel when my friend takes 5 consecutive moves and checkmates me out of nowhere it is certainly cute to have a knight and bishop hug it out rather than fight to the death. Their site is easy enough to find and if the game speaks to anyone I'd say pick it up and support the creators but chessplus works perfectly.

    • @callummccleave5843

      @Zero chess 'takes' have to be made by free pieces, a union cannot 'take' or move out of the union on its own. if a free piece 'takes' another free piece it creates a union. A chain occurs whenever a free piece 'takes' a piece already in a union. It replaces your first piece in the union and can then immedietly make a free move, should that move result in it 'taking' a second union then the same happens. e.g (there is a union of your knight and your opponents rook, both of you can move it during your turns but only by the movement rules of the one you own, lets say you manage to take the knight/rook union with one of your bishops. the bishop replaces the knight making it a bishop/rook union and the freed knight immediatly moves to any square that a knight can legally move to, lets say the square it moves to has your queen in a union with an oppenents bishop then the knight replaces the queen and you move your queen to any legal space for what is essenially the 3rd move in your turn.) this is indefinete at can go for as long as you can chain unions until you land a free'd piece on an empty square or take a oppents free piece causing a new union.
      Check and Checkmate (or Sako and Paco according to the rules) is simple, you do not legally have to declare Check but can still do so out of courtesy. this is because it is VERY tough to recognise when a chain would lead to a checkmate so instead its down to the players to recognise if they're king is in danger. once the king has united with another piece (or a player has noticed it obviously cannot avoid that outcome in the next move) then the king is in 'Paco' and the opponent wins. This means that the king CANNOT defend itself sice it taking a piece in self defense would result in a union with the piece causing a checkmate.
      They mention having a twitch channel on their old kickstarter but I do not know if it is still active.
      their are a LOT of fine detail rules I'm leaving out because this is already a wall of text, chessvariants .com has the full rules. if you can its always great to support the people behind these by buying an offical set especially when it was created by just one dutchman with a vision of a peaceful chess full of hugging pieces.

    - You can fianchetto without have to move the b/g pawns
    - Queens can create Mate-in-1 battery threats very easily
    - A rook+bishop combo is actually better than a queen BECAUSE you can threaten/attack squares while retaining control of certain squares with the other piece that didn't move

    There is another commercial variant of chess invented by Dutch artist Felix Albers, called Paco Šako (Peace Chess in Esperanto), in which pieces can merge together. However, only opposing pieces can be joined together. This is called a union, which can be formed by the move that would cause a capture in traditional chess. However, during the game no pieces are captured and so none are removed from the board. Unions can move as whole according to the move options of the owner's piece in that union. The only way to free a piece from a union is to play another separate piece of your own color towards that union, which then takes the place of the piece that is freed. The freed piece must then move to either an empty square, a square with a separate opposing piece (creating a new union), or a square with a union on it, freeing yet another piece that must then move as well (this is called a chain). En passant unifying is allowed, as well as castling with a rook in a union, as long as the rook in question has not been moved. Pawns in unions are promoted into a piece that takes their place when reaching the last row, and this also happens when the opponent's move of the union causes the pawn to reach the last row. A pawn can land on the player's first row if it's part of a union that is moved by the opponent, and pawns on the first row have the same initial move options as pawns on the second row (en passant unifying applies the same way here as well). Announcing šako (equivalent of check) is not mandatory and the king doesn't have to avoid moving into, through or out of šako, except when castling, which is when it's not allowed. Goal of the game is to unite one of your pieces with the opponent's king.

    • @TripleSGames
      @TripleSGames  ปีที่แล้ว

      Paco Sako is coming soon :)

    • @williamwilting
      @williamwilting ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TripleSGames That's good to know. The game is not as well known as it deserves to be.
      A few other commercial variants to consider are Knightmare Chess (kind of chess meets Magic: The Gathering), Raindrop Chess (chess with a luck factor in the form of cards as well as a dropping mechanic) and Omega Chess/Omega Chess Advanced (an expanded variation of traditional chess with a few new types of pieces.
      Omega Chess (basic mode) is a variant played on a 10×10 board with 4 extra squares extending the two longest diagonals with one extra square on each end (they're diagonally adjacent to the corner squares of the 10×10 board. The traditional pieces start in the same kind of position in the first two rows as in normal chess, counting from the center of the row towards the corner. This results in an additional square next to the rooks, on which each of the 2 pieces of the first type, the champion, is placed. The squares in front of the champion will be occupied by extra pawns. The 2 extra squares diagonally adjacent to the champions (on the same side of the board) will be occupied by the 2 pieces of the second new type, the wizard.
      The game is played the same way as in standard chess, with the following changes:
      - Pawns move as like in normal chess, but can move 1, 2 or 3 squares forward on their first move. En passant capture can be done according to the normal rules, but in addition to from the fourth row it can also be done from the fifth row; any pawn moving more than one square on the first move can be captured en passant if the opposing pawn is 'passed' this way (i.e. a pawn that moves 3 squares forward on the first move can be captured en passant by an opposing pawn on either the fourth or fifth row.
      - The champion can jump/capture 2 squares in any direction (octogonally), or move/capture one square orthogonally.
      -The wizard can either jump/capture in a 3-1 squares L-shape similar to the knight, or move/capture 1 square diagonally.
      Omega Chess Advanced adds 3 elements to the basic mode, but I don't know them in detail. First, the knight is used, but is now a templar knight, a piece that either jumps/captures like a regular knight, or jumps (without the option to capture) in a 3-2 L shape. Second, a new piece, the fool, starts off the board and can be deployed during the first 20 moves. When it moves, it basically mimics the moves of the last opposing piece moved and immobilizes opposing pieces adjacent to it. And third, an optional move rule called 'guarding' can be added to the game. Guarding is essentially the same as castling with the same conditions, but it is done with the queen instead of the king, and the queen is not restricted by such things as moving through, into or out of check (squares between the queen and rook still must be empty, though).
      The goal of the game in both modes is still the same: checkmate the opposing king.
      The interesting thing in this game is that cerain endgames work out a little differently due to the extra 4 squares in the corners of the board. For example, a queen can mate a king without her own king's help. A single rook is significantly weaker against a lone king, because it can't mate him on the extra squares, so the king will try to hide there. Mate with 2 knights and a king against a lone king seems to be possible now, which it is not in regular chess (unless the opponent plays like the king is suicidal). Knight, bishop and king against king can be considered impossible, because the king can hide on the extra square not belonging to the bishops color quite easily, while the help of the assisting king isn't enough to drive him away from that corner, unlike in normal chess. 2 bishops and king against king seems easier here than in normal chess. The extra squares change quite bit of the tactics in the endgame.

    But how would you combine one of your pawns to a piece? Do they move the way they attack, or only their forward moves?
    Also feels like en passant should be allowed, it's your own fault if you let your Knight+pawn get captured. Or at least en passant should at least remove the pawn half.

    That combined bishop and knight check mating the king at the end looks disgusting, because you can't normally do it with only one piece.

    Is there any sort of benefit to combining two of the same piece?

    Why can't a pawn in this variation promote to a lesser piece (knight, bishop, rook)?
